Captain Percival Drayton (1812-1865) of Charleston, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Percival Drayton family papers, 1827-1967, chiefly document Percival Drayton's naval career, particularly during the Civil War. Drayton's papers, 1827-1865, comprise correspondence, naval orders and reports, a diary, financial papers, and certificates. The remainder, 1845-1967, consists of papers created or received by other Drayton family members and relatives, as well as ephemera, photographs, and printed material, mostly pertaining to Percival Drayton. Also included are letters written by an unidentified relative, a naval notebook, and later family correspondence regarding Drayton's naval service, as well as two manifest books for shipments of tobacco in the Maryland-District of Columbia area, 1803-1817, their connection to the Drayton family being unclear. less

Lester Polakov, set and costume designer, was born in 1916. He began his career designing sets in summer stock from 1936-1940. From 1938-1941 he worked on Broadway shows as an assistant to designers such as Harry Horner, Boris Aronson, and Albert Johnson. In 1973 he designed the sets for Robert Wilson's play THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JOSEPH STALIN. His other works include: THE EMPIRE BUILDERS; MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; THE WINNER; and RIGHT YOU ARE, among others. He has also created designs for industrial stage shows, exhibitions, and films. From 1955-1958 he taught theatrical design at Columbia University, and from 1958 to the present he has been the director of the Lester Polakov Studio of Stage Design, now known as the Studio and Forum of Stage Design. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

Charles Ludlam, actor, director, and playwright, was born April 12, 1943. He began his career in 1966 with the PlayHouse of the Ridiculous, both as a performer and playwright. Artistic differences caused Ludlam to leave and form his own company, The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, which achieved international recognition. Ludlam's three most successful plays were BLUEBEARD, STAGE BLOOD, and CAMILLE. Although the company attracted grant funding, it was always on the edge of the avant-garde and finances were uncertain. The company made its final tour with Ludlam in the first months of 1980 and then disbanded. Ludlam died on May 28, 1987. The collection consists of diaries, notebooks, scripts, set and costume designs, clippings, transcripts of interviews, and manuscript pages from a published collection of Ludlam's plays. This material was collected as research material for The Complete Plays of Charles Ludlam. The material provides valuable insight into every stage of Ludlam's playwriting process from the development of an idea to its realization on stage. Since Ludlam relied so heavily on improvisation, the information contained in the notebooks and plot outlines in this collection cannot be found anywhere else. less

Annie Proulx is a novelist, short fiction writer, historian, and essayist. She was born in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1935, to Lois Nellie Gill Proulx, a painter and amateur naturalist, and George N. Proulx, the vice-president of a textile mill. Her first collection of short fiction, Heart Songs and Other Stories, was published in 1988. In 1990, she completed her debut novel, Postcards, for which she won the 1993 PEN / Faulkner Award for Fiction. Her second novel, The Shipping News, won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and the Heartland Award for Fiction. Accordion Crimes, her third novel, was published in 1996. In 1997, she was awarded the Dos Passos Prize for Literature. In 1998, her story “Brokeback Mountain” won the National Magazine Award, The New Yorker Award for fiction, and the O. Henry Prize. It was adapted, in 2005, for a Paramount Pictures film by Larry McMurtry and Dianna Ossana, and was directed by Ang Lee. Her second collection of short fiction, Close Range: Wyoming Stories, was published in 1999; the lead story, “The Half-Skinned Steer,” was selected by John Updike for the Best American Stories of the Century (1999). In 2000, Proulx’s short story collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories won The New Yorker Award for fiction. Her fourth novel, That Old Ace in the Hole, was published in 2002. This was followed by two collections of short stories: Bad Dirt: Wyoming Stories 2 (2004) and Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories 3 (2008). In 2008, she also published and edited Red Desert: A History of a Place, a collection of 38 essays of which she wrote 10. Bird Cloud: A Memoir, was published in 2011, and is named for the painstakingly designed and hand-crafted home she had built for herself in Wyoming, on a 640-acre nature preserve through which runs the North Platte River. Arnie Kantrowitz is a writer, educator, and gay activist who was integrally involved in several gay activist groups in the 1970s and 1980s including the Gay Activists Alliance, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee. The Arnie Kantrowitz papers date from 1951 to 2008 and contain personal papers and organizational records chiefly reflecting Kantrowitz's activities as a writer, gay rights activist, and English professor. The collection consists of correspondence from friends, fellow writers, and readers; diaries and notebooks; records concerning his involvement in various gay rights organizations; files relating to his teaching career at the College of Staten Island; notes, drafts and manuscripts of his published and unpublished writing; sound and video recordings; and personal memorabilia. less
