Lester Polakov, set and costume designer, was born in 1916. He began his career designing sets in summer stock from 1936-1940. From 1938-1941 he worked on Broadway shows as an assistant to designers such as Harry Horner, Boris Aronson, and Albert Johnson. In 1973 he designed the sets for Robert Wilson's play THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JOSEPH STALIN. His other works include: THE EMPIRE BUILDERS; MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; THE WINNER; and RIGHT YOU ARE, among others. He has also created designs for industrial stage shows, exhibitions, and films. From 1955-1958 he taught theatrical design at Columbia University, and from 1958 to the present he has been the director of the Lester Polakov Studio of Stage Design, now known as the Studio and Forum of Stage Design. The Lester Polakov Papers and Designs consist of papers, photographs, set designs, and technical drawings regarding his set designs for numerous productions. less

Joseph Konopka was a scenic artist for the NBC-TV show Late Night with Conan O'Brien between 1993 and 2009. Kenneth Koch was an American poet, playwright, essayist, screenwriter, novelist, and short-story writer. The Kenneth Koch papers document the personal and professional activities of the writer, Kenneth Koch. Holograph and typescript drafts comprise the bulk of the collection. The papers contain holograph manuscripts and typescripts of the author's published and unpublished work (in every genre, including plays, "comics," and games), notes and other material related to the works, Koch's correspondence, photographs, collaborations, material related to his work with children, miscellaneous personal documents, printed material, ephemera, scrapbooks, press cuttings and photocopied reviews of his books, and holograph manuscripts and typescripts of works by other writers (especially Frank O'Hara and John Ashbery). Also included in the papers are 9 boxes of unsorted printed ephemera, and 3 boxes of journals, magazines, and newspapers. The correspondence in the collection is mostly made up of incoming material, of which there are three categories: personal, professional, and fan mail. The personal and professional correspondence is arranged alphabetically by author; within each author's folder letters are arranged by date. Of the personal correspondence and works by others, the most substantial holdings are by "New York School" artists such as Frank O'Hara, John Ashbery, James Schuyler, Larry Rivers, Harry Mathews, Fairfield Porter, and Jane Freilicher. Also noteworthy are letters and works by Koch's former students, Ron Padgett, Frank Lima, Tony Towle, David Shapiro, and Jordan Davis. Also present are publishing contracts and royalty statements for several of Koch's books. less

Carter Burden (1941-1996) was a progressive New York City Councilman, publisher, and media magnate. The Carter Burden Harvard College notebooks consist of 12 volumes of class notes taken by Burden as an undergraduate, primarily in Philosophy lectures. less

Charles Ludlam, actor, director, and playwright, was born April 12, 1943. He began his career in 1966 with the PlayHouse of the Ridiculous, both as a performer and playwright. Artistic differences caused Ludlam to leave and form his own company, The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, which achieved international recognition. Ludlam's three most successful plays were BLUEBEARD, STAGE BLOOD, and CAMILLE. Although the company attracted grant funding, it was always on the edge of the avant-garde and finances were uncertain. The company made its final tour with Ludlam in the first months of 1980 and then disbanded. Ludlam died on May 28, 1987. The collection consists of diaries, notebooks, scripts, set and costume designs, clippings, transcripts of interviews, and manuscript pages from a published collection of Ludlam's plays. This material was collected as research material for The Complete Plays of Charles Ludlam. The material provides valuable insight into every stage of Ludlam's playwriting process from the development of an idea to its realization on stage. Since Ludlam relied so heavily on improvisation, the information contained in the notebooks and plot outlines in this collection cannot be found anywhere else. less

Arnie Kantrowitz is a writer, educator, and gay activist who was integrally involved in several gay activist groups in the 1970s and 1980s including the Gay Activists Alliance, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee. The Arnie Kantrowitz papers date from 1951 to 2008 and contain personal papers and organizational records chiefly reflecting Kantrowitz's activities as a writer, gay rights activist, and English professor. The collection consists of correspondence from friends, fellow writers, and readers; diaries and notebooks; records concerning his involvement in various gay rights organizations; files relating to his teaching career at the College of Staten Island; notes, drafts and manuscripts of his published and unpublished writing; sound and video recordings; and personal memorabilia. less

The Albert Shaw Papers contain correspondence (professional and personal); files concerning the books, articles, and speeches Shaw authored, administrative records and articles from the Review of Reviews; and many records of Shaw's personal life, including financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera, and his notes on the Shaw family's genealogy, as well as Shaw's personal memoirs. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less
