Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts and typescripts, correspondence from the author, a journal for 1945 through 1951, and notebooks kept from 1946 to 1947. The manuscripts and typescripts include essays, poems, notes for work, portions of novels and stories, translations, and transcripts by the author of works by Chester Kallman and Diana Dodge Lewars. The correspondence, dating from 1946 to 1953, includes letters from the author to W. H. Auden, Douglas Bush, Howard Griffin, Theodore Spencer, and others, as well as letters from W. H. Auden and Thomas Mann to the author.
