The Stokes Family Genealogical Research Papers consist of genealogical research materials compiled and collected by Anson Phelps Stokes, author of the Stokes Records (1910), and his daughter, Helen Phelps Stokes on the Phelps and Stokes families, who were primarily bankers and merchants in New England and New York in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

Reverend Henry Miller Cox (1854-1916) was a minister of the Reformed Church of America and a genealogist. He held pastorates in New York and New Jersey, and was the author of The Cox Family in America, published in 1912. The Henry Miller Cox papers includes his personal and professional correspondence as a clergyman, 1904-1915, and papers pertaining to his genealogical research on the Cox family in America. Research materials include correspondence with Cox family members and others, and notes and family trees he compiled. Nineteenth-century Cox family documents consist of business papers, 1818-1871, of his father James B. Cox of New Brunswick, N.J. and New York City, and his associates, including the New Brunswick firm of Bray & Cox in partnership with John W. Bray. John Dean Fish (1846-1935) was a genealogist and contributor to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The John Dean Fish papers consist of his genealogical correspondence and research materials, including family records, charts, notes and writings, and research files, pertaining to the Fish family of England in America. Although his published work, The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England, traces the family's roots back for centuries in England, the bulk of the material in this collection pertains to a projected later work on the members of the family after their emigration to America in the eighteenth century. His research for The Fish Family in America included many branches of the Fish family throughout the United States, the majority of which settled in New York and New England. Among the prominent members of the family were Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), a politician who served as Governor of New York and Secretary of State under President Grant, and his son, Stuyvesant Fish (1851-1923), president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The collection, the bulk of which reflects his research activities from the 1890s through the 1920s, contains his correspondence with, and documents collected from, various individuals, government agencies, and historical societies, as well as files he compiled on individual family members and the towns in which they lived. Edna Pearl Clay Goodspeed (1884-1963) was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who served as a nurse overseas during World War I. Her ancestors included Revolutionary War soldiers Charles Mathewson, Capt. Aaron Coe, David Clay and Capt. Samuel Cobean, and tailor Otis Madison, who pioneered a new system for garment measuring and cutting in the early nineteenth century. At the time of Goodspeed's death she was preparing a history of the the Clay family of Ohio and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius and other families, entitled Some Ohio Pioneers. Her writings, notes and research materials were given to genealogist Helen B. (Blanchard) Hartman with whom Goodspeed had been collaborating before her death. The Clay family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical scrapbooks; correspondence of Edna Clay Goodspeed and Helen B. Hartman relating to their genealogical research on the Clay family and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius, Cobean, Hanna, Brinckerhoff, Coe, and Boyd families, with notes and family trees; some personal papers, 1916-1957, of Edna Clay Goodspeed; and the manuscript of Goodspeed's work, Some Ohio Pioneers.
