The Barnes family were early settlers of Fairfield, N.Y. Letters of the Barnes family of Fairfield, Herkimer County, N.Y., include three letters written to family members by Philinda Barnes (later Mrs. John Bucklin) in 1817, 1827, and 1852, discussing her health, family matters, and local news; and a letter from James Barnes to Harriet Briggs, dated Wilkes Barre, 13 Apr. 1853, giving history of the Barnes family in America and England. With donor's genealogical notes on the Barnes, Dryden, Cope, Scott, Bucklin and Mitchell families, dated 1934; and photostat copies of original letters.
