Flahooley . Among his principal collaborators were Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Burton Lane, Arthur Schwartz and Jerome Kern. He died in Los Angeles in 1981. The collection is primarily business papers, scripts, research notes, notes for lyrics and production ideas from 1929 to 1981. Papers deal mainly with the professional life of Harburg. His political ideology and opinions can be seen in his lyrics, research notes and clippings files. Though there is little mention of his being blacklisted in 1945, his attitudes on government and politics indicates how he may have fallen victim to the McCarthyites and the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Aline MacMahon was born May 3, 1899 in McKeesport, Pa. After studying and performing with the Neighborhood Playhouse Theatre, she made her Broadway debut in THE MIRAGE (1921). She appeared in over 50 plays, among them THE EVE OF SAINT MARK (1942); ROMEO AND JULIET (1959); CORIOLANUS (1965); THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1961); and TRELAWNY OF THE 'WELLS' (1975). Miss MacMahon also had a distinguished film career. Her 43 films include notable productions such as FIVE STAR FINAL (1931); ONCE IN A LIFETIME (1932); KIND LADY (1935); AH, WILDERNESS (1935); DRAGON SEED (1944) for which she won an Oscar nomination; THE SEARCH (1948) and ALL THE WAY HOME (1963). She appeared, as well, on radio and television. She died in October 1991. The Aline MacMahon Papers consist of correspondence, programs and photographs which document her career and personal life. The correspondence includes early dealings with the Shuberts and fan mail. Photographs include both personal and professional images. There are also transcripts of oral history interviews highlighting her life and career.

Ewing Cherry was an American stage actor with years of touring experience. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Ewing Cherry (sometimes billed as V. E. Cherry) made his stage debut in WITHIN THE LAW in Chicago in 1916. Soon afterwards Cherry was working in vaudeville in a skit called OUT OF LUCK. He went on to play juvenile leads for various stock companies in such shows as MRS. WIGGS OF THE CABBAGE PATCH and THE LITTLE SPITFIRE through the 1910s and 1920s. His Broadway credits include WHAT PRICE GLORY?, SKIDDING with Glenda Farrell, THE NIGHT BEFORE with Franchot Tone, and MARCHING MEN (1930) with Leon Ames. Cherry also acted in radio drama. After a period of retirement, he returned to the stage for a role in the Off-Broadway production of Sean O'Casey's RED ROSES FOR ME (1961), then appeared in O'Casey's MOON SHINES ON KYLENAMOE and in Nikolai Evreinov's THE CHIEF THING (1963), his last professional credit. Ewing Cherry died in New York City on March 30, 1969. The Ewing Cherry papers span 1916 to 1962, and consist of letters to Ewing Cherry from employers and friends, a number of contracts securing Mr. Cherry's services as an actor for various stock companies between 1917 and 1927, three booklets (1920-23) introducing the members of the Gene Lewis-Olga Worth stock company, photographs of Ewing Cherry in a variety of characterizations, playbills for a dozen plays in which Ewing Cherry appeared, press releases, fliers, telegrams to and from Ewing Cherry, and clippings of reviews which mention his performances.

Elliott John Nugent, actor, playwright, producer, and director, was born on September 20, 1896, in Dover, Ohio, the son of John Charles Nugent and Grace Mary Fertig. Nugent's most notable work is the Broadway play, THE MALE ANIMAL (1941) co-written with James Thurber. His screenwriting creits include: WHISTLING IN THE DARK, THE MALE ANIMAL and SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE. His film credits include a lead role in THE VOICE OF THE TURTLE, as well as co-producer of THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. Nugent died on August 9, 1980. The Elliott Nugent papers consist of clippings, photographs, programmes, correspondence, and manuscripts documenting his career as an actor playwright, producer and director, for the years 1916 to 1965.

Karl Bernstein was a theatrical publicist for New York theater productions from 1925 to 1970. Bernstein began his career as a vaudeville critic but soon became a theatrical publicist in the 1920s representing theatres in his native Brooklyn. Moving to Broadway he publicized such noted works as those written by Gershwin and Cole Porter. He was a founding member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. He died in New York in 1983. The Karl Bernstein Scrapbooks contain clippings, programs, press releases, reviews, halftones, and some photographs of theater productions spanning his career from 1925 to 1971. Included are scrapbooks for numerous musicals by such composers as Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Vernon Duke, Jule Styne, Morton Gould, Kurt Weill, and Sandy Wilson, as well as some plays and operettas. Among the many shows represented in this collection are ANYTHING GOES (1934); RED, HOT, AND BLUE! The George Oppenheimer papers consist of correspondence, clippings, writings, research notes and annotated playbills from his professional career as a writer and drama critic. The papers span the years 1943-1977, though there is not much from his early professional career, only limited materials on his work during World War II. Of special note is the correspondence from famous personalities of stage and screen. The largest collection of letters is from Edna Ferber, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, however most of this correspondence is thankyou's for copies of his books or good performance reviews.

Karras was perhaps best known in America for his work in adaptations of Greek drama, especially Sophocles' OEDIPUS REX, which he directed a number of times and in which he also played the title role. Theaters include London's Adelphi Theatre, Covent Garden Theatre and the Drury Lane Theatre; the Royal Theatre of Copenhagen (Kongelige Teater), and Teatro Comunale in Bologna. Among the many performers and choreographers represented are Maria Bonfanti, August Bournonville, Agnes de Mille, Fanny Elssler, Jenny Lind, Giuseppina Morlacchi, Serge Oukrainsky, Andreas Pavley, Anna Pavlova, Rita Sangalli, and Marie Taglioni.
