Carl Don (1910-2001) was a stage and screen actor whose work is represented by clippings, photographs, photograph albums, playbills, reviews, and writings.

Biographical/historical information

Carl Don (1910- 2001) was born in Vitebsk, Russia. Known as a character actor, Don performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway and at regional theatres including the productions of Romanoff and Juliet with Peter Ustinov (both stage and the movie), Dear Me, the Sky is Falling with Gertrude Berg, and The Tenth Man directed by Tyrone Guthrie. He also appeared on television and in screen roles. In later years, Don taught acting classes and wrote poetry.

Don died in New York City in 2001.

Scope and arrangement

The collection, dated 1958 to 2001 (bulk dates 1970s-1980s), holds clippings, letters, photographs, photograph albums, and playbills, reflecting the career of the actor Carl Don.

Don documented his career by retaining clippings of his performances, interviews of himself in publications; playbills from Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theatres; resumes; and writings of poetry.

The photographs are of Don dressed in costumes, scenes from plays, and snapshots of him with friends. Many of these photographs have not been identified with the exception of his screen appearances.
