Anthony Jerome Griffin (1866-1935) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from the Bronx, New York City. He served in the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; practiced law in the Bronx; was founder and editor of the Bronx Independent; and served four terms as New York State Senator from 1911 to 1915. He also was an inventor and amateur author. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal and military records, political and personal papers, memorabilia, and printed matter relating to Griffin's military and political career. Correspondence, 1885-1935, is largely related to his political activities; the remainder pertains to his legislative concerns, immigration matters for his constituents, as well as some personal correspondence. Legal papers, 1885-1930, include case files, estate files and title abstracts. His writings consist of manuscript and typescript versions and galley proofs of poems, plays and stories. Diaries, 1886-1930, and notes and notebooks, 1883-1934, contain his observations on many professional and personal activities in addition to subject files. Military and patent records concern his military service and endeavors in submarine safety. Political papers are a combination of printed matter, notes and memoranda. Financial records are his accounts from 1887 to 1934. American author Dorothy Thomas (1898-1990), was a prolific short-story writer whose work appeared in numerous periodicals, including The New Yorker, Harper's and The Saturday Evening Post. The collection consists of typescripts of three short stories: "Fire Guard," 27 pp., "Happiness Insurance," 15 pp., and "The Parting," 20 pp., the first two with a few manuscript emendations. Also present is a volume containing Thomas' whimsical line drawings of people in scenes imagined or encountered, including some "modern writers." These are sketched in ink in a dummy copy of Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Wine from These Grapes." less

David Amram (born 1930) is an American composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist active in classical, jazz, and folk music. The David Amram papers, dating from 1937 to 2011, most strongly represent his career path from the 1950s through the early 2000s, documenting his compositions, performances, conducting, writings, and business matters. They also evidence Amram's relationships with musicians and writers, including Jack Kerouac and other "Beat generation" figures. less

Adam W. Spies (1800-1891), the son of Mary Bergh and John Spies, was a hardware and military goods merchant in New York City. He was employed by the firm of C. & J. D. Wolfe, and was their agent in England in the 1820s. In 1834 he established A. W. Spies & Company, later Spies, Kissam & Company, retiring in 1866. He acquired extensive landholdings in New York City, upstate New York, and numerous other states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, among others. In 1832 he married Sarah Ann Morrison (d. 1883), daughter of John C. Morrison of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Spies was a founding member of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor.The Adam W. Spies real estate and genealogy scrapbook is primarily a record of his real estate transactions, containing numerous manuscript plat maps, many in watercolor with extensive annotations; a few printed maps; listings of properties, taxes and assessments; and legal notes. Holdings in Manhattan and Williamsburg, Brooklyn are especially well documented. Genealogical materials include charts and notes concerning the Spies, Morrison, and Bergh families, and autobiographical accounts, with advice to grandchildren, recalling his career, his service as a volunteer fireman, and life in Manhattan prior to the building of the Erie Canal and Croton Aqueduct. The volume also contains pasted clippings, certificates and receipts, cut silhouettes of Spies, and a few sketches, notably a watercolor street view by Spies of his father’s place of business in Manhattan as depicted in 1808. There are some miscellaneous letters and notes relating to family and real estate matters, some loose, including a genealogical inquiry to his son-in-law John W. Cochrane dated 1907. A few of Spies’s genealogical entries are updated to 1930. Elizabeth Morgan, née Bonney. Her birth date remains uncertain, but she was born in London, and was still a minor on 24 April 1818 when she married Thomas Morgan (1786-1862), of Dixon, Morgan and Co., wine and spirits traders. A stained glass window in St. Olave's Church, Hart Street, bears an armorial decoration commemorating the union. Elizabeth was a close friend of the novelist Jane Porter; she signed her letters to Porter with the nickname "Belinda." The Morgans had at least five children: Thomas (1819-1892), who helped run the family business in London; Francis (1820-1876), who moved to Spain to handle the family business's connections there; Aaron Augustus (1822-1888), a clergyman and Shakespeare scholar; Emily Eustatia, married name Gruggen (1828-1909); and Adelaide Elizabeth, married name Beresford (1837-1902). Elizabeth Morgan died at the age of 65, and was buried in All Souls, Kensal Green on 9 July 1866. Her grandson, Fr. Francis Xavier Morgan (1857-1935) was the legal guardian of the fantasy writer J. R. R. Tolkien. Five of the nine items appear to have been torn out of the same quarto-sized sketchbook: an original ink drawing of a cavalier soldier, by Robert Ker Porter, signed by him and inscribed to Mrs. Morgan, 25 May 1841; an original watercolor of a women's charitable home inhabitant soliciting donations, signed "E. M."; a pencil drawing of "Bradley Rectory," signed "F. J. G., 1851"; a page of manuscript music, "Le dernier Soupir," signed "M. T."; and a pencil and watercolor copy of R. Westall's portrait of Lady Charlotte Harley, "Lord Byron's Ianthe." The other items include: a small unbound notebook (50 total pages, some blank) in Elizabeth Morgan's hand, circa 1849-1850, which includes biographical notes on Jane Porter, a note on Robert Ker Porter's "Battle of Agincourt" painting, notes from readings, tables of expenses, etc.; a printed invitation accomplished in manuscript, to Mr. Mrs. Morgan, for an event at Boyle Farm on 30 June 1829, from Lord Chesterfield, Lord Alvanley, Lord Castlereagh, Mr. de Roos, and Mr. Grosvenor; a watercolor of the Rialto Bridge in Venice; and a small pencil drawing, "The House in which Lord Byron died at Missolonghi," signed "E. The Space Committee of the N.Y.P.L. Board of Trustees was established in 1955 to discern the space needs of the various divisions in the Research Library. Its members were: Chairman Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., Edward G. Freehafer, Morris Hadley, Carl H. Pforzheimer, Roland L. Redmond, Deoch Fulton, and Rutherford D. Rogers. The committee was active through 1959. Records of the Space Committee span the years 1955 to 1959 and include supporting material from the 1940s before the Committee's founding. Correspondence consists of letters and memoranda from committee members. Reports, Studies & Plans are formal written findings of the Committee and supporting visual materials. Jacob Snider (1811-1866), of Philadelphia, Pa., was an inventor of artillery, notably the Snider rifle which was used by the British Army. His son John Vaughan Snider was also an inventor. They were both involved in a lawsuit against the British government for compensation for the design of the Snider rifle. Collection consists of correspondence, documents, maps, drawings, photographs, and printed matter of Jacob and John Vaughan Snider. Jacob Snider papers contain correspondence, documents, and other items pertaining to land titles in Pennsylvania and Georgia, the delivery of rifles, and legal matters. John Vaughan Snider papers include legal documents, materials about patents for his inventions, photographs of rifles, and printed matter. less

Hudson Maxim (1853-1927) was an American inventor, mechanical engineer and explosives expert. He worked as a consultant for the Du Pont Company from 1897 to 1927 and wrote books on explosives and literary and political matters. Collection consists of correspondence; typescripts of speeches, books and articles; patent materials; legal documents; family papers; photographs; and printed matter. Papers document Maxim's career as an inventor and explosives expert; experiments with soybeans and other foods; anti-Prohibition activities; involvement with Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, local affairs; and family and personal life. Bulk of correspondence dates from last few years of Maxim's life, 1925-1927, and concerns his personal and professional activities. Harold Gould Henderson (1889-1974) was an American author, teacher, translator, and anthologist of Japanese poetry. He taught the history of Japanese art at Columbia University, was president of the Society of Japanese Studies and the Japan Society from 1948 to 1952. In 1945 he served in Japan on General Douglas MacArthur's staff as special advisor on education, religion and art. His works included books and articles on Japanese poetry and grammar and his own Haiku poems. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1960-1974, with poets, scholars, translators, and editors concerns Haiku poetry. Also, general correspondence of the 1930s, typescripts of writings, lecture notes on Japanese grammar, notes on Haiku, manuscript by K.C. Henry Kittredge Norton (1884-1965) was an American educator, journalist, author, and businessman. He was an advocate of aerial transit as a method of urban mass transportation. His positions included trustee and president of the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad, director of Walter Kidde & Co., and member of the New York City Transit Authority. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, designs and plans, and scrapbooks of photographs documenting Norton's efforts toward the adoption of monorails for San Francisco and New York City. Papers include correspondence, 1947-1954; published and unpublished reports, 1948-1955, relating mostly to mass transportation in the San Francisco Bay area; and designs, blueprints and drawings of monorails, as well as related patents. Also, photographs in various formats and scrapbooks of photographs of New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad facilities and operations. less

James Ferguson (1710-1776) was a Scottish philosopher, astronomer and engineer. Collection consists of scrapbook containing letters, ca. 1769-1775, by Ferguson, relating to his work and other scientific matters; drawings, pencil sketches, charts, and tables, both printed and original, dating from approximately the 1740s, of astronomical and mechanical discoveries and inventions by Ferguson and others; and materials about Ferguson including maps, clippings, engravings of portraits of Ferguson, and other items. less

Gottfried von Reigersberg (1893-1962) was a German machinist who emigrated to the U.S. in 1927. He was born Gottfried Streit but was adopted in 1922 by Emilie Freien von Reigersberg, a descendant of a Bavarian noble family. Collection consists of correspondence, family and legal papers, photographs, and ephemera of the von Reigersberg and Streit families. Correspondence is largely personal in nature and is with members of the family. Family papers include documents concerning Gottfried von Reigersberg; legal papers and correspondence of his wife, Elsie von Reigersberg; baronial papers with Emilie Freien von Reigersberg's personal papers, adoption documents, genealogical information, poems, drawings, prints and other heirlooms; and photographs of family, friends and the town of Regensburg, Germany. less

The collection includes some memorabilia of Artur Bodanzky: 2 batons, portrait drawings by Emil Orlik and Albert Sterner, a tiny photograph of Bodanzky swimming with the child Linda Muschenheim, 2 commemorative items including a poem by Brenda Putnam illustrated with photographs of sculptures of Bodanzky conducting, and 1 drawing inscribed to the Bodanzkys by Hendrik Willem Van Loon. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of musicians inscribed to one or both of the Muschenheims. Some of these are also postcards with handwritten messages. Musicians represented include: Adolf Busch, Kirsten Flagstad, Sigrid Onégin, Arturo Toscanini, and others. Other correspondence consists of 4 postcards with views, 1 letter and 1 telegram. The collection contains portraits in photographs, drawings and reproductions of drawings of individuals involved in the entertainment arts. The portraits were created by G. Maillard Kesslère from 1925 through 1952, with the bulk of them amassed from 1925 to about 1946. The subjects include actors, dancers, singers, musicians, composers, conductors, critics, writers, directors, producers, and designers for the theater, dance, ballet, opera, radio, and television. The largest group in the collection consists of approximately 858 portraits in half-length, bust, or head only formats, and includes 589 black and white photographs, approximately 30 original pastel or charcoal drawings, and some 239 black and white photomechanical reproductions of original drawings. Over 500 of the subjects in this group are identified. The collection also includes a series of black and white photos of male and female subjects who are largely unidentified, but who were likely active in society, business, or the performing arts. The collection also contains biographies of theatre and entertainment professionals, compiled from 1951-1952. less

The Schindler papers consist of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, pencil drawings, programmes, production schedules, and other material related to the career of Ewald Schindler. The collection includes extensive correspondence between Schindler and Liljan Espenak as well as photographic material, covering both Schindler's life and many of his dramatic roles. less

The Executive Committee, one of the original standing committees of the Board of Trustees, takes general charge of the administration of the affairs of the N.Y.P.L. Corporation. It is empowered to act on behalf of the Board of Trustees in between Board meetings. Records of the Executive Committee consist of handwritten, typewritten and printed documents as well as photographs and architectural drawings. Minutes are records of the meetings of the Executive Committee. To 1949 they are bound in volumes and early volumes include photographs of the Carnegie sites under construction. From 1967 the minutes are typewritten and loose. There are no minutes for the period 1950 to 1966. The Letterbooks consist of three volumes, 1902-1903, 1903-1906, and 1912-1928, of official letters written by the Executive Committee. Many of the letters are signed by John Shaw Billings or Edwin H. Anderson, who as Directors of the Library also served as Secretary to the Executive Committee. The bulk of Letters Received concern library construction and finances. The General Files are arranged alphabetically by subject. They relate to various Library matters but especially the construction of the Carnegie branch libraries and the Central Building, operations of the Circulation and Reference Departments, and finances. Central Building Files relate to the design, construction and maintenance of the Central Building, which were overseen primarily by the Executive Committee. Assorted Records include correspondence regarding the appointment of John Shaw Billings, as well as printed agreements between the City of New York and the Library regarding a pension plan for employees. less

Faber Birren (1900- ) was a color consultant to industry and the U.S. government. He wrote books on color theory and also works of fiction. Collection consists of typescripts of Birren's writings, photographs, and printed ephemera about Birren. Original typescripts, some with drawings, include novels, short stories, essays, and critical materials on the nature and theory of color. Also, autobiographical notes and bibliography prepared by Birren, photographic portraits and printed ephemera related to his career. less

David McNeely Stauffer (1845-1913) was an American civil engineer, editor, artist, and collector. He worked for several railroads including the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad until 1876 when he went into private practice. He wrote scholarly articles and edited the Engineering News. In addition to collecting autographs and illustrations, he designed book plates and did pen and ink drawings. Collection consists of Stauffer's personal papers and his autograph and seal collection. Personal papers contain correspondence, 1865-1910; financial papers; notes; sketches and illustrations; manuscript; and transcripts of historical correspondence. Autograph collection of historical and literary figures of the 18th and 19th centuries includes artists, clergy, educators, inventors, engineers, lawyers, authors, doctors, scientists, and officers of the American Revolution and other political figures. less

Collection consists of correspondence, writings, drawings, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1920-1971, is with Eustace's associates at Fox, family and friends. Writings include typescript and printed versions of his plays and poems; several typescript versions of Eustace's play, "King of the Mountain," ca. 1934-1949, with prefaces to the 1948 and 1955 editions, and related correspondence, 1945-1951; notes and sketches; and diary, 1891-1893. Doug Anderson is an illustrator and author who specializes in subject matter pertaining to the theater. Born in Sutton, New Hampshire in 1919, Anderson worked for several years for the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts in Concord, N.H. After moving to New York he worked as a freelance artist, specializing in theater drawings and caricatures for newspapers in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. Anderson's theater work has appeared in magazines such as THE NEW YORKER, THE NEW REPUBLIC, FORTUNE, THEATRE ARTS, READER'S DIGEST, and others. Anderson has also illustrated a number of books, including HOW TO DRAW WITH A LIGHT TOUCH, which he co-authored with Mary Anne Guitar. The Doug Anderson papers consist of drawings or reproductions of drawings by Anderson, two versions of a feature story concerning actress Margaret Rutherford written and illustrated by Anderson, and some correspondence concerning Anderson's work from Rutherford and Estelle Winwood. Margaret Rutherford's note concerns Anderson's article about her, written for Theatre Arts magazine in 1954. Included is Anderson's typescript draft of the article sent to the actress for her comments, her response, and the published version of the article. There are three Anderson drawings of Martita Hunt in the title role of THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1948 Broadway premiere), one of which is inscribed, dated, and signed by her, as well as an inscribed drawing of Estelle Winwood in a supporting role in the same production, accompanied by her brief note of thanks. The collection contains personal and professional materials documenting her life and participation in the Ford Peace Expedition of 1915-1916, and her 1937 co-founding of the Campaign for World Government. less
