Correspondence, 1958-1959, between British author Aldous Huxley and editor David Solomon at Esquire magazine in New York. Solomon would later edit the book LSD: the Consciousness Expanding Drug (1964), dedicated to Huxley. Letters pertain to Esquire's interest in reprinting Huxley’s 1957 academic article The History of Tension, and Huxley’s concerns about conflicts with his recent article for The Saturday Evening Post, The Drugs that Shape Men’s Minds (1958). Huxley briefly discusses overlapping content and later declines an offer to rework the material due to various obligations. Solomon also inquires about publishing Huxley’s lecture series at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The collection, in one chronological order, consists of three autograph letters signed and one typescript letter signed from Huxley to Solomon, six typescript carbon copies of letters from Solomon to Huxley, an Esquire internal circular communication, 1958 September 23-29, expressing viewpoints on reprinting the article, and a note to Solomon from editor Arnold Gingrich. Also present are photostat copies of the published articles; The History of Tension, which appeared in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, is incomplete. less

Bartolomeo Vanzetti (1888-1927) and Nicola Sacco (1891-1927) were Italian-American anarchists convicted of murdering two men during a robbery in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1920. Appeals on their behalf were unsuccessful and they were executed on August 23, 1927. The collection consists of five autograph letters by Vanzetti, 1925-1927, one with an accompanying note; a copy of a 1929 letter by a newspaper editor regarding his reportage on the Sacco and Vanzetti case, with its 1968 letter of donation; and Vanzetti’s manuscript English translation of Piero Jahier’s La Guerra e la Pace : Pagina Scelte, an Italian edition of anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon’s 1861 work, La Guerre et la Paix. Three autograph letters from Vanzetti to Roger Baldwin, 1925-1926, concern the translation of the Jahier work; an autograph letter from Vanzetti to Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, 1926, hopes that she will be able to visit him; and an autograph letter from Vanzetti to Robertson Trowbridge, 1927, accompanied by Trowbridge’s explanatory note, thanks him for copying some verses by Shelley. Also present is a copy of a letter written by New York World editor Philip Duffield Stong to B.W. Huesch, 1929, defending the integrity of his journalism in regard to his interview with Sacco and Vanzetti at Dedham Prison in 1927. Rodman Gilder (1877-1953) was an American editor and author. He was editor of Criterion and Credit Monthly and wrote on various subjects. The best known of his literary works is The Battery New York, a History (1935). He was also the archivist of Century Associates. Collection consists of notes and sources for Gilder's writings, papers relating to the history and business operations of the Century Company between 1913 and 1914, and some personal papers. Materials for Gilder's writings include correspondence, typescripts of articles, and research notes for biographies of Don Marquis and Joan of Arc. Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Harold Gould Henderson (1889-1974) was an American author, teacher, translator, and anthologist of Japanese poetry. He taught the history of Japanese art at Columbia University, was president of the Society of Japanese Studies and the Japan Society from 1948 to 1952. In 1945 he served in Japan on General Douglas MacArthur's staff as special advisor on education, religion and art. His works included books and articles on Japanese poetry and grammar and his own Haiku poems. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes, and printed matter. James Turcotte (1945-1993) was an American art gallery owner and tax advisor who began writing in the late 1960s. At first he wrote fiction and free verse reflecting his experiences as a gay man, father, drug user, and resident of Los Angeles and New York. After being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, his writings were primarily poetic and journalistic observations of his life. Collection consists of Turcotte's writings, sketches, photographs, and videocassette produced by Turcotte. Turcotte's writings, 1969-1992, include poetry, fiction and journals, some illustrated with sketches. David Barish Feinberg (1956-1994) was a writer and AIDS activist in New York City. After graduating From M.I.T. in 1977, Feinberg lived briefly in Southern California before moving to New York City in 1979, where he earned a graduate degree in linguistics at New York University, and became a computer programmer for the Modern Language Association while writing in his spare time. His three published books are Eighty-Sixed (1989), Spontaneous Combustion (1991) and Queer and Loathing (1994). Diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1987, Feinberg was active in ACT UP for the next seven years. He died of AIDS-related illnesses in November 1994. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, other personal papers, and photographs of David Feinberg, mostly pertaining to his life in New York, as a writer and a gay man in the age of AIDS. The bulk of the correspondence is incoming from friends and relatives and concerns personal matters. Writings include novels, stories, articles and memoirs by Feinberg (and one box of writings by others) with many drafts and sketches for uncompleted works. The collection also contains printed materials about AIDS and ACT UP; personal files containing desk calendars for 1981 through 1993, financial records, and other items; photographs of gay rights demonstrations, parties, vacations, and family gatherings; and sound recordings. less

David J. Dallin (1889-1962) was a writer and lecturer on Soviet affairs. Born in Russia, he fled to Germany after being imprisoned for anti-tsarist activity. He returned to Russia following the February Revolution of 1917 but left the country again in 1922. Expelled from Germany and then Poland, he finally went to the United States at the outbreak of World War II. For nearly twenty years he was a contributing editor and columnist for the anti-communist paper The New Leader. His writings included books and articles on economic and political subjects. He also was a visiting professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania. Collection consists of Dallin's research files used in the preparation of his writings on the Soviet Union. Among these notes is background information for the footnote documentation for two of his books, Soviet Espionage and Soviet Foreign Policy After Stalin. Also, interviews held between 1948 and 1951 with former Soviet political prisoners and notes on primary and secondary sources relevant to the study of Soviet espionage and the NKVD. less
