This collection documents the research material collected by Barbara Barker. The collection spans ca. 1833-1998. It consists of correspondence, extensive clippings from books, and newspapers of the mid-to-late 1800’s. José Limón (1908-1972) was a Mexican-born modern dancer and choreographer best known for the development of the Limón technique; dances such as La Malinche (1947), The Moor's Pavane (1949), and The Traitor (1954); and for co-founding the Limón Dance Company. The José Limón photographs, dated from 1933 to 1968, contain negatives, slides, and prints that depict Limón's professional and personal life, dancers with whom he was associated, and performances by the Limón Dance Company. less

Saeko Ichinohe (born 1936) was the founder, choreographer, and a dancer of the Saeko Ichinohe Dance Company, which she created in 1970. The Company merged traditional Japanese movement, music, and costumes with modern Western movement. The collection chronicles Saeko Ichinohe's professional career and that of her dance company from the late 1960s to 2014. It contains choreography and dance notation, photographs, costume notes, teaching material, administrative and financial documents, correspondence, biographical material, repertoire lists, programs, writings by Ichinohe, publicity, and audio and video recordings. less

David S. Berlin was the staff photographer for the Nikolais Dance Theatre, the dance company founded by modern dance choreographer, Alwin Nikolais. Berlin's collection contains color transparencies and slides depicting performances choreographed by Nikolais between 1959 and 1962. less

Claudia Gitelman (1936-2012), was a dancer, choreographer, author, and assistant professor at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Her artistic collaborators for productions include Alwin Nikolais, Murray Louis, and Hanya Holm. The Claudia Gitelman papers, dated 1946-2012 (bulk dates 2010-2011), focuses mostly on Gitelman's curatorial work for Alwin Nikolais' Total Theater of Motion, a centennial celebration held at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts from 2010 to 2011. These files include correspondence, photographs of the Nikolais Dance Theatre dance performances, watercolor sketches of dancers, and programs. Gitelman's career development is represented to a lesser extent mainly through photographs, programs and writings. The electronic records contain a number of manuscripts, drafts, and planning documents for the book On Stage Alone: Soloists and the Modern Dance Canon (2012) that Gitelman co-edited with Barbara Palfy. Robert Kovich (1950-1991) was a dancer and choreographer. He danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for eight years before leaving to work on his own choreography. In the 1980s, Kovich performed, choreographed, and taught dance in New York and France. The collection contains photographs and negatives, correspondence, blank contracts, programs, clippings, a press pack, and material from Kovich's memorial retrospective. The photographs include Kovich performing solo and in group works, as well as in more candid shots. less

Kaja Gam (born 1952) is a Danish-born performance artist, modern dancer, choreographer, and designer. She is the founder of the Awkward Dance Company, and co-founder of The School of Hard Knocks. The Kaja Gam photographs, dated 1972 to 1989, is made up almost exclusively of slides that document Awkward Dance Company rehearsals and performances, set and costume designs, and social events. less
