Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) was an American businessman, banker, diplomat, and statesman. He founded the banking firm of L.P. Morton & Co. in New York City. After an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1876, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York in 1878. He was Minister to France from 1881 to 1885, was elected Vice-President of the U.S. under Benjamin Harison in 1888, and served as Governor of New York in 1895 and 1896. In 1899 he founded the Morton Trust Co. and retired after the company merged with Guaranty Trust. The Levi P. Morton papers consist of correspondence, family papers, speeches, biographical materials, political memorabilia, photographs, and scrapbooks documenting the political and professional career, personal life and family background of the businessman and politician. Correspondence, 1842-1920, relates to civil reform, Morton's political campaigns, his service as Minister to France, and his activities as businessman, banker, congressman, vice-president, and governor. Also, correspondence, 1871-1915, of his wives, Lucy K. Morton and Anna Livingston Morton; papers of the Morton, Parsons, Street, and Kearney families; memorabilia from Morton's political campaigns; and biographical sketches, speeches, photographs, and scrapbooks of clippings, 1859-1913.

John Dean Fish (1846-1935) was a genealogist and contributor to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The John Dean Fish papers consist of his genealogical correspondence and research materials, including family records, charts, notes and writings, and research files, pertaining to the Fish family of England in America. Although his published work, The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England, traces the family's roots back for centuries in England, the bulk of the material in this collection pertains to a projected later work on the members of the family after their emigration to America in the eighteenth century. His research for The Fish Family in America included many branches of the Fish family throughout the United States, the majority of which settled in New York and New England. Among the prominent members of the family were Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), a politician who served as Governor of New York and Secretary of State under President Grant, and his son, Stuyvesant Fish (1851-1923), president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The collection, the bulk of which reflects his research activities from the 1890s through the 1920s, contains his correspondence with, and documents collected from, various individuals, government agencies, and historical societies, as well as files he compiled on individual family members and the towns in which they lived. Also present is a manuscript of his work The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England; an original 1732 record (and typed transcript) of a legal dispute which involved Martha and Moses Fish of Stonington, CT; and a copy made by Fish in 1864 of an 1811 extract from the diary of Asa Fish.

The Provoost (Provost) family, of French Huguenot descent, were early settlers of New Amsterdam. David Provoost (1670-1724) was a merchant and Mayor of the City of New York from 1699 to 1700. His nephew John Provoost (d. 1767) was the son of Samuel Provoost and Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander, prominent New York City merchants, and the stepson of James Alexander, a prominent New York lawyer and politician. The Provoost family papers include a manuscript copy of David Provoost's genealogy of the Provoost family of New Amsterdam (compiled 1724), made by John Provoost in 1742, as well as two letters from John Provoost at Curacao to his parents dated 18 May 1736 and 21 June 1736, concerning shipment and prices of goods, addressed to his stepfather, James Alexander, in New York. The Sharpe-Stevens family papers include genealogical research notes and family papers on the ancestors of Rosa Sharpe Stevens and, to a lesser extent, her husband Yale Stevens. Families include the Sharpes of Pennsylvania and the related Alden, Denison, Montgomery, Patterson, Sill and Yale familes of Connecticut and elsewhere in New England. The collection contains original Sharpe family correspondence, dating from 1895 to 1934, as well as copies of letters to and from Rosa Stevens' grandfather, Pennsylvania coal industry pioneer Richard Sharpe, 1856-1894, which discuss the illness and death of his daughter Emily, his coal business, arrangements for his son to attend the school of Rev. Dr. Lyons of West Haverford, PA, and other personal and business matters. Family correspondence of 1907 contains preliminary discussions with sculptor Frank Edwin Elwell regarding the commission of a sculpture honoring one of the family's revolutionary war ancestors. Also present is an 1898 diary of Rosa's aunt Elizabeth Montgomery Sharpe and a letter she received from Jane Addams in 1895. Stevens family correspondence, 1898-1951, is chiefly addressed to Rosa Stevens or "Cousin Mary." Of note are copies of three letter of Charles J. Stevens written from Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The remainder of the collection includes genealogical notes, photocopied newspaper clippings, and charts.
