The Ilka Chase Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, scripts, scrapbooks and other material related to the career of Ilka Chase. There is also considerable material related to the career of her mother, Edna Woolman Chase, and to "Vogue" magazine. There is a large amount of personal correspondence, especially between Ilka Chase and her mother. The collection also contains the entire run of scripts from a radio program hosted by Ilka Chase from January 1951 to October 1951 and a complete run of articles for a syndicated newspaper column from 1955 to 1964. The photograph collection contains photos of Ilka Chase both in her professional career and private life, Edna Woolman Chase, and other celebrities, including Mr. and Mrs. Eugene O'Neill. less

The collection includes some memorabilia of Artur Bodanzky: 2 batons, portrait drawings by Emil Orlik and Albert Sterner, a tiny photograph of Bodanzky swimming with the child Linda Muschenheim, 2 commemorative items including a poem by Brenda Putnam illustrated with photographs of sculptures of Bodanzky conducting, and 1 drawing inscribed to the Bodanzkys by Hendrik Willem Van Loon. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of musicians inscribed to one or both of the Muschenheims. Some of these are also postcards with handwritten messages. He organized Music in Our Time, a concert series which ran from 1954 to 1974 at the 92nd St. YMHA, New York. The Outdoor Cleanliness Association (OCA) was formed in 1930 by a group of New York City residents as a voluntary civic association to promote awareness of the refuse disposal and pollution problems becoming increasingly apparent in the city by the 1930s. The OCA helped citizens to identify and locate proper city authorities to correct health and sanitation violations and attempted to increase public awareness through poster campaigns, school programs and fundraising events. The group discontinued its activities in 1971. Collection is largely comprised of correspondence, 1934-1969, of the Outdoor Cleanliness Association with city agencies, special interest groups and civic organizations concerning educational projects, fundraising programs and social events. Richard Ward, actor, director, author, educator, and police detective, was born on March 15, 1915. Mr. Ward started out in show business in vaudeville when he was 11 years old when he teamed up with his sisters, calling their act, Dot, Flo, and Dick. For 10 years Mr. Ward was a police detective assigned to the office of Frank S. Hogan, Manhattan district attorney. Richard Ward was born Richard Waugh. "Richard Ward" is a stage name. Mr. Ward died on June 30, 1979. The Richard Ward Papers consist of clippings, correspondence, production notes, photographs and scripts which deal with his career as a scriptwriter and actor. Popular Publications, a publisher of popular detective, adventure, romance, and Western fiction, was founded in New York City in 1930 by Henry Steeger. During the 1930s his firm became the largest publisher of popular pulp fiction in America. In 1942 the firm acquired the copyrights to the properties of the Frank A. Munsey Co. which included Argosy Magazine. Steeger was president and publisher of Popular Publications (in addition to various other publishing companies) until the firm was sold in 1972. Collection consists of correspondence, copyright records, index card files, financial records and personal papers of Henry Steeger, and other records related to the operations of Popular Publications. Correspondence, ca. 1914-1977, concerns copyright assignments and permissions of Popular Publications and Frank A. Munsey Co. and is with authors, agents, publishers, motion picture companies, and attorneys. Other correspondence pertains to radio rights and syndication, "Court of Last Resort" (feature in Argosy magazine which sought to aid those who might be victims of miscarriages of justice), foreign sales, and editorial policy. Copyright registration records, 1930s to 1960s, relate to publications of Steeger's various publishing companies. Index card files contain information about authors published by Popular Publications and Frank A. Munsey Co. Personal papers, 1960-1968, of Steeger include correspondence concerning his presidency of the National Urban League and Popular Publications, his real estate investments, anbd printed matter. The Albert Shaw Papers contain correspondence (professional and personal); files concerning the books, articles, and speeches Shaw authored, administrative records and articles from the Review of Reviews; and many records of Shaw's personal life, including financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera, and his notes on the Shaw family's genealogy, as well as Shaw's personal memoirs. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

Beatrice Laufer is an American composer. The first installment consists of the full score and vocal score of the opera, Ile, based on a play by Eugene O'Neill ; reproduction of the program of a performance of Ile at the Eugene O'Neill Festival, Shanghai, 1988 ; and photocopies of production photographs of Ile, 1988. A videotape of Ile (Shanghai Opera, 1988) and an audiotape of Ile (Yale School of Music, 1980) have been transferred to the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound. Charles Ludlam, actor, director, and playwright, was born April 12, 1943. He began his career in 1966 with the PlayHouse of the Ridiculous, both as a performer and playwright. Artistic differences caused Ludlam to leave and form his own company, The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, which achieved international recognition. Ludlam's three most successful plays were BLUEBEARD, STAGE BLOOD, and CAMILLE. Although the company attracted grant funding, it was always on the edge of the avant-garde and finances were uncertain. The company made its final tour with Ludlam in the first months of 1980 and then disbanded. Ludlam died on May 28, 1987. The collection consists of diaries, notebooks, scripts, set and costume designs, clippings, transcripts of interviews, and manuscript pages from a published collection of Ludlam's plays. This material was collected as research material for The Complete Plays of Charles Ludlam. The material provides valuable insight into every stage of Ludlam's playwriting process from the development of an idea to its realization on stage. Since Ludlam relied so heavily on improvisation, the information contained in the notebooks and plot outlines in this collection cannot be found anywhere else. less

Known chiefly as an arranger of popular songs and as a composer of music for films, American musician Arthur Lange was also a pianist, a conductor, and a composer of concert works. He wrote the books: Arranging for the Modern Dance Orchestra, and A New and Practical Approach to Harmony. Film scores, music manuscripts, published music, unpublished arrangements for films, sheet music from Tin Pan Alley, photographs, autobiographical material, clippings, and scrapbooks. Most of the musical scores are contained in bound volumes entitled "Alpha to Omega". Some of the film scores were composed in collaboration with other composers, chiefly Charles Maxwell. 8 photographs of Arthur Lange may be found in the Music Division's Iconography collection, and 2 photographs of the Arthur Lange Orchestra may be found in the Music Division's Rare Photograph file: PhE 543 and PhE 544. Hildegarde Loretta Sell was born in Wisconson on February 1, 1906. Known professionally as "Hildegarde," Miss Sell became a successful caberet and cafe singer. She was also a pianist and an actress. Hildegarde made her first recording on October 17, 1934. Hildegarde was honored on her eightieth birthday, February 1, 1986, at Carnegie Hall, in New York City. Shortly after World War I, Copeland stayed in Kronberg with the family of Margarethe of Hesse, Princess of Prussia, sister of Kaiser Wilhelm. Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, writers of stage, screen, television and radio were both born in Ohio. They met in New York where they were pursuing careers in broadcasting. Among the founding fathers of Armed Forces Radio, they created and adapted many stories for radio. Later they entered the world of commercial broadcasting for both radio and television. In the 1940s they began writing plays. Among their best known works are Auntie Mame, Mame, Inherit the Wind and The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail . The Lawrence and Lee papers consist of their early correspondence and writings from broadcasting including Armed Forces Radio and commercial radio and television as well as production files and scripts from many of their major works. Also included are project ideas, other writings and speeches, scrapbooks and some photographs. The papers document their careers up until the mid-1960s. Missing from the collection are their works after this date. less

Lillian Moore (1911-1967) was an American dancer, writer, teacher, and dance historian. Holographs and typescripts. The correspondence is partially related to Miss Moore's research on the 19th century ballet, with letters from dance authorities such as Walter Toscanini, Ivor Guest, Ifan Kyrle Fletcher, Ted Shawn, and Clive Barnes.
