David Hunter McAlpin (1816-1901) was a tobacco manufacturer and philanthropist. In addition to owning the tobacco firm, D.H. McAlpin Company, he also made substantial investments in real estate including the McAlpin Hotel in New York City and was a director of several banks and insurance and energy companies. Collection consists of McAlpin's estate papers, correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings, and photographs. Estate papers, 1871-1930, are the legal and financial documents executed by McAlpin's heirs and include legal papers; accounts; cash books, 1901-1927; journals, 1901-1927; and ledgers, 1901-1923. Remaining papers consist of letters, 1871-1894; estate letters, 1901-1930; letterbook, 1925; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings about McAlpin; and photographs, mainly of the construction site of the McAlpin Hotel. less

Hildegarde Loretta Sell was born in Wisconson on February 1, 1906. Known professionally as "Hildegarde," Miss Sell became a successful caberet and cafe singer. She was also a pianist and an actress. Hildegarde made her first recording on October 17, 1934. Hildegarde was honored on her eightieth birthday, February 1, 1986, at Carnegie Hall, in New York City. The collection includes extensive correspondence between Schindler and Liljan Espenak as well as photographic material, covering both Schindler's life and many of his dramatic roles. less

The Executive Committee, one of the original standing committees of the Board of Trustees, takes general charge of the administration of the affairs of the N.Y.P.L. Corporation. It is empowered to act on behalf of the Board of Trustees in between Board meetings. Records of the Executive Committee consist of handwritten, typewritten and printed documents as well as photographs and architectural drawings. Minutes are records of the meetings of the Executive Committee. To 1949 they are bound in volumes and early volumes include photographs of the Carnegie sites under construction. From 1967 the minutes are typewritten and loose. There are no minutes for the period 1950 to 1966. The Letterbooks consist of three volumes, 1902-1903, 1903-1906, and 1912-1928, of official letters written by the Executive Committee. Many of the letters are signed by John Shaw Billings or Edwin H. Anderson, who as Directors of the Library also served as Secretary to the Executive Committee. The bulk of Letters Received concern library construction and finances. The General Files are arranged alphabetically by subject. They relate to various Library matters but especially the construction of the Carnegie branch libraries and the Central Building, operations of the Circulation and Reference Departments, and finances. Central Building Files relate to the design, construction and maintenance of the Central Building, which were overseen primarily by the Executive Committee. Assorted Records include correspondence regarding the appointment of John Shaw Billings, as well as printed agreements between the City of New York and the Library regarding a pension plan for employees. less

Fiorello H. La Guardia (1882-1947) began his political career as deputy attorney of the state of New York in 1915. He was a representative in the U.S. Congress from 1917 to 1932 except for service in World War I and a term as president of New York's Board of Aldermen from 1919 to 1921. La Guardia ran for mayor of New York City in 1933 and served in that office for twelve years. He became director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation program in 1945 after leaving the mayor's office. Papers document La Guardia's career as a congressman, president of the Board of Aldermen and three-term mayor of New York. The two largest portions of the collection are the congressional and mayoral correspondence files. Congressional correspondence, ca. 1918-1933, includes letters received and carbons of responses written either by La Guardia or by his secretary on his behalf, clippings, greeting cards, printed House bills, invitations, photographs, memoranda, notes, press releases, printed matter, and telegrams. Letters from constituents concern topics such as employment and naturalization and letters from citizens around the country relate to La Guardia's stand on issues before Congress, including social issues and prohibition. Mayoral correspondence files, 1933-1945, consist largely of correspondence with members of the public who wrote requesting help with education, employment, immigration, prison terms, and other problems; suggesting appointments for various city offices; and offering ideas, opinions and appreciation. Very little appears to document the daily operations of city business. Also included is a small group of press releases; typescript and printed speeches, articles, and other writings; printed matter; flight logbook, 1917-1919, kept by La Guardia on the Italian front; scrapbooks of clippings; and miscellaneous papers on a variety of topics (of note among these are photographs, printed matter and correspondence. less

David Spitz (1916-1979) taught courses in political science and political philosophy at Ohio State University from 1947 until 1970 when he left for an appointment at the City University of New York. He served as visiting professor at various institutions in the U.S. and abroad and was the author of books and articles about political theory. Edmond Pauker (ca. 1880-1962) was a Hungarian-born literary agent and play broker in New York who represented European, especially Hungarian, playwrights, as well as some American authors. Collection consists of Pauker's personal and business papers. Personal papers contain correspondence, 1926-1959; legal and financial documents; telephone books and calendar notes; and papers of Honora and Yolan Pauker (Edmund Pauker's sister and his wife.) Business papers include correspondence, 1926-1959, of Edmond Pauker Inc.; correspondence, 1923-1946, with prominent authors, playwrights, movie studios, theatre organizations, and agents. His many friends and associates included John Singer Sargent, Mary Garden, Isadora Duncan, Mrs. Fiske, Sarah Bernhardt, Melba, Calvé, Lina Cavaliere, Maggie Teyte, Mrs. Jack Gardner, Debussy, De Falla, Laurette Taylor, and Marie Dressler. Shortly after World War I, Copeland stayed in Kronberg with the family of Margarethe of Hesse, Princess of Prussia, sister of Kaiser Wilhelm. Biographical and autobiographical writings, letters, photoprints and drawings, 3 musical scores, and other items relating to the career of George Copeland. John Francis Sullivan (1878- ) was an engineer who worked on New York City municipal improvement projects from the 1900s through the 1920s. In 1930 he was appointed City Planner. From 1918 to 1920, as an Army Reserve officer, Sullivan directed construction of the United States Nitrate Plant No. 2 at Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He also served in 1927 as a consultant on the construction of the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, minutes, transcripts, blueprints, maps, notes, sketches, photographs, and printed matter chiefly concerning the projects Sullivan worked on in New York City. less

Beatrice Laufer is an American composer. The first installment consists of the full score and vocal score of the opera, Ile, based on a play by Eugene O'Neill ; reproduction of the program of a performance of Ile at the Eugene O'Neill Festival, Shanghai, 1988 ; and photocopies of production photographs of Ile, 1988. A videotape of Ile (Shanghai Opera, 1988) and an audiotape of Ile (Yale School of Music, 1980) have been transferred to the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound. Auguste Kolar was a Bohemian pianist active in Prague and Vienna from about 1859 to 1874. Born in Prague, she studied there with Josef Proksch. In 1865 she performed a 2-piano work in a concert with Clara Schumann. After her marriage to Dr. Heinrich Auspitz in 1868, she took the name Auguste Auspitz-Kolar. During the summers of 1869 and 1870, she performed in London. Charles Ludlam, actor, director, and playwright, was born April 12, 1943. He began his career in 1966 with the PlayHouse of the Ridiculous, both as a performer and playwright. Artistic differences caused Ludlam to leave and form his own company, The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, which achieved international recognition. Ludlam's three most successful plays were BLUEBEARD, STAGE BLOOD, and CAMILLE. Although the company attracted grant funding, it was always on the edge of the avant-garde and finances were uncertain. The company made its final tour with Ludlam in the first months of 1980 and then disbanded. Ludlam died on May 28, 1987. The collection consists of diaries, notebooks, scripts, set and costume designs, clippings, transcripts of interviews, and manuscript pages from a published collection of Ludlam's plays. This material was collected as research material for The Complete Plays of Charles Ludlam. The material provides valuable insight into every stage of Ludlam's playwriting process from the development of an idea to its realization on stage. Since Ludlam relied so heavily on improvisation, the information contained in the notebooks and plot outlines in this collection cannot be found anywhere else. less

Vivian Martin, actress, was born in Michigan, 22 July 1893. She made her stage debut in 1901 in CYRANO DE BERGERAC and was then seen in PETER PAN and LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY. As an adult she acted in numerous Broadway shows and then turned to the cinema where she appeared in silent films for Paramount Pictures. After her marriage to Arthur W. Samuels in 1926, Miss Martin retired from the stage and screen. Vivian Martin died 16 March 1987.
