Biographical/historical information

Vincent M. Sherwood was born in March 25, 1889, in De Smet, South Dakota. He was the president of South Dakota Society of New York in the 1940s and was always proud of his South Dakotan heritage. He mainly composed with Richard Howard and their many songs include I believe in the man in the sky, I love only you my darlin', and Kiss me again. He died on June 2, 1972, in New York.

Scope and arrangement

The collection consists of Vincent Sherwood's autobiography, birth certificate, last will and testament, correspondence, business papers, newspaper clippings and music scores. Some titles are I believe in the man in the sky, I love only you my darlin', and Kiss me again.

The Vincent Sherwood papers are arranged in two series:

  • Series I: Personal Papers
    1927 - 1972

    This series includes Vincent Sherwood's birth certificate and last will and statement, correspondence to and from Vincent Sherwood, his business papers, and newspaper clippings.

  • Series II: Scores
    1948 - 1951

    This series includes Vincent Sherwood's compositions and published sheet music.
