Harry Buxton Forman, English bibliographer and forger. He wrote a great deal of critical and bibliographic literary scholarship throughout his life, most notably on Shelley and Keats, all the while maintaining a career in the Post Office. In 1886 Forman met fellow bibliographer T. J. Wise through the Shelley Society, and the two began secretly printing counterfeit publications of works of famous authors, subsequently validating the authenticity of the books through their own bibliographic works. Their scheme remained largely undetected until nearly two decades after Forman's death, with the publication of John Carter and Graham Pollard's Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets. The Harry Buxton Forman manuscript material in the Pforzheimer collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: the holograph text of his Memoir of Shelley, as published in the 1892 Aldine edition of Shelley's works ; papers relating to his "The Building of the Idylls," an essay on Tennyson ; and over a dozen essays and works of criticism on Shelley or Shelley-related publications. The correspondence is dated from between 1877 and 1913, and mostly discusses Shelley scholarship. The Teresa Guiccioli manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings consist of a four-part autobiographical work; five notebooks recording her thoughts, activities, and accounts of Lord Byron's life; and thirty-three books from Guiccioli's personal library with her annotations. The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1820 and 1822. Correspondents include Lady Blessington, the Irish-born writer and literary hostess; Lord Byron, the English poet (her lover); Victor Hugo, the French writer; Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the English novelist; and over a dozen others. The writings include: two holograph journals kept during her travels with the Shelleys; holograph notes and essays prepared for E. J. Trelawny, relating to Shelley and Byron; and an effusive book inscription to Captain Edward Silsbee, the Shelley enthusiast. The bulk of the correspondence is from 1847-1856, and includes reflections on her experiences with Byron and the Shelleys, and various matters of family interest. Among the writings are a holograph fair copy of his verse drama, Marino Faliero; the original manuscript of Canto XVI of his satirical poem, Don Juan; and the holograph manuscript of "Fare Thee Well," his poem to Lady Byron upon their separation. The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1818 and 1823. Correspondents include Teresa Guiccioli, his last Italian mistress; Leigh Hunt, the poet, journalist, and literary critic; Thomas Moore, the poet and songwriter; Percy Bysshe Shelley, the poet; and over seventy-five others.
