Photocopies of material collected by Kobler in the early 1960s for an unfinished biography of Toussaint Louverture. Documents focus on the socio-economic conditions of the French colony of Saint Domingue and the political activities of Touissaint as Governor of the colony between 1791 and 1802. Photocopies in the collection as well as a few postcards and illustration show various historic sites and clothing of late 18th century France and Saint Domingue. Collection provides general background information on the lives of blacks in Saint Domingue, and material on the history and diplomatic relations between Haiti and the United States, including papers referring to Touissaint, Jean Jacques Dessalines, Charles Leclerc, Pauline Leclerc, and Donatien Rochambeau. Material includes information about the history of Saint Domingue from 1791 to 1804, descriptions of the Haitian war of independence, narrative describing the captivity and death of Touissaint in France, correspondence between Touissaint and the French agent Philippe Roume, and correspondence between Charles Leclerc and Rochambeau. less

The collection includes some memorabilia of Artur Bodanzky: 2 batons, portrait drawings by Emil Orlik and Albert Sterner, a tiny photograph of Bodanzky swimming with the child Linda Muschenheim, 2 commemorative items including a poem by Brenda Putnam illustrated with photographs of sculptures of Bodanzky conducting, and 1 drawing inscribed to the Bodanzkys by Hendrik Willem Van Loon. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of musicians inscribed to one or both of the Muschenheims. Some of these are also postcards with handwritten messages. Musicians represented include: Adolf Busch, Kirsten Flagstad, Sigrid Onégin, Arturo Toscanini, and others. Other correspondence consists of 4 postcards with views, 1 letter and 1 telegram. Frieda Hempel (1885-1955) was a German soprano with the Metropolitan Opera. William B. Kahn (1882-1971) was a New York City business man and political writer who married Hempel in 1918, and who continued to serve as Hempel's business manager after their divorce in 1926. The collection primarily includes correspondence between Hempel and Kahn from the year 1950, including letters, cables, and postcards. less

Marguerita Sylva (1875-1957) was a mezzo-soprano and actress on whose business stationery for "Sylva Management" in New York is printed "The World's Greatest Carmen.". In 23 ALS and 2 postcards, Marguerita Sylva's salutations progress from "Dear Mr. Chamberlain Brown" to "Dear Chamberlain" but she consistently discusses bookings, concerts, and acting roles. Other papers include business letters from other agents to Mme. Sylva, and programs and brochures with marginal notes in Sylva's hand. The papers contain professional and personal correspondence; reproductions of photographs documenting her operatic career, including photographs of Brooks with Placido Domingo and Frank Corsaro; financial records and advanced ticket sales regarding Brooks' recital in 1977; as well as correspondence, notes, ticket lists, and potential performers relating to the New York City Opera's tribute to Brooks in 2008. Mary Wigman (1886-1973) was a German dancer, teacher, and choreographer. She is recognized as one of the founders of modern dance, and as a pioneer of expressionist dance. Her early performances were silent or danced with percussion only. The photographs and postcards in this collection document a portion of Wigman's works from the period 1926 to 1947. The photographs are presented in accordion style photo albums and are of Wigman dancing solo. The postcards mostly depict solo work, but include two group performances. less

Marshall Hugh Montgomery was born May 16, 1909 in New York. He received a B.A. from Middlebury College, Vermont and married Prudence Ingham in 1933. Montgomery worked in the finance industry and was Senior Vice-president of Aubrey G. Langston Co. from 1951-1974. He began collecting postcards when he retired in 1974. Montgomery was also an amateur genealogist and local historian and lived in Connecticut and Delray Beach, Florida. He died in Delray Beach on Oct. 11, 2000 at age 91. Over 100,000 mostly color postcards compiled by Marshall Hugh Montgomery. Topics include geographic places, both United States and foreign, greeting cards, boats, bridges, children, costumes, humor, lighthouses, military and naval, roads, roadside America, and World War I. There is a secondary set of topics and several small collections within the larger: the Wieland Collection (compiled by George Reber Wieland), the Flora Downing Collection and "Detroits" (Detroit Publishing Co.). There are also a few notes, clippings, pricelists, newsletters, catalogs, and other publications, as well as a number of books relating to postcards and postcard collecting. less

Nonny Gardner (1914-1998) was a Dartington Hall School student who, following her graduation, travelled with three fellow Dartington alumni throughout the United States. The Dartington Hall School Students Scrapbook, compiled by Gardner to memorialize their 1933 visits to New York, Chicago, the Southwestern United States, California, and Oregon, includes snapshot photographs, picture postcards, ticket stubs, travel brochures, and other ephemera. less
