The American Foundation for AIDS Research is a nonprofit organization formed in September 1985 from the merger of two existing AIDS research organizations: the AIDS Medical Foundation, based in New York City, and the Los Angeles-based National AIDS Research Foundation. The AIDS Poster Collection donated by the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) contains posters related to the fight against AIDS that date from 1986-1993. The posters in this collection concern AIDS awareness campaigns organized by amfAR; Art Against AIDS; Day Without Art, a project of Visual AIDS; and the World Health Organization. less

Morty Manford (1950-1992) was an activist and key strategist in the early days of the gay rights movement, a Legal Aid lawyer, and an Assistant Attorney General of New York State. While an undergraduate at Columbia University in 1971, he founded Gay People at Columbia, one of the first gay campus groups in the country. Subsequently, he began writing about the goals of the gay movement, speaking on college campuses and at gay clubs, and organizing protest demonstrations, parades, and rallies in support of gay rights legislation in New York City and throughout the United States. Among the many gay rights organizations he co-founded were the Gay Activists Alliance, which strove to bring gays together as a political force, the National Coalition of Gay Activists, which publicized and coordinated rallies and demonstrations on a national scale, and the clandestine Study Group, a New York-based think-tank which worked with the gay infrastructure in the state and local political establishments to influence political and public opinion and promote the state-wide activities of the gay rights movement. The papers of Morty Manford span the years 1962 to 1986 and chiefly document his activities as a leading activist and ideologist of the gay and lesbian rights movement. Ted Bloecher (1929- ) is a retired actor and member of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus. His papers (1950-2000) consist of correspondence, personal journals, a memoir and other writing, theatre memorabilia, and his New York City Gay Men's Chorus files. The papers document daily life of a struggling actor and singer in New York City, gay life before and after Stonewall, and thirty years of UFO research. less

Orvil Dryfoos (1912-1963) was a newspaper executive and the publisher of The New York Times from 1961 to 1963. The Orvil Dryfoos papers document Dryfoos's daily activities and the operations of The Times, particularly during his tenure as vice president, president, and publisher from 1954 to 1963. The collection also contains Dryfoos's private business papers and records concerning the Dryfoos family's finances, travels, and other personal matters. less

Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. (1917-2007) was a Pulitzer Prize winning American historian and Robert F. Kennedy supporter and biographer. Addressing a private group in a Brooklyn Heights (New York City) home on October 5, 1964, Schlesinger delivered a speech in support of Robert F. Kennedy's candidacy to become a U.S. Senator. Schlesinger's intention was to present Kennedy as a liberal ally to skeptical New York City Democrats. In his speech, Schlesinger discussed the influence of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy on American politics; situated the carpetbagger accusations aimed at Kennedy in historical and constitutional context; and invoked Kennedy's role in the United States's response to the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example of his leadership ability. The Lesbian and Gay History: Defining a Field conference records (1994-1995) reflect the planning of and interest in this groundbreaking conference held at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center on October 6-7, 1995. The conference, sponsored by the Ph.D. program in history at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS), brought together scholars from across the United States to discuss and disseminate ideas pertaining to the research, teaching, and documentation of the history of the LGBTQ community. The conference included graduate student panels and sessions focused on archives, sources, and methodology and teaching lesbian and gay history. The records reflect the work of the conference organizers, specifically David Nasaw, chair of the CUNY Graduate Center history program and graduate student Tracy Morgan, and indicate the involvement of prominent scholars and activists. Jim Carroll was an American poet, diarist, and rock musician associated with the downtown arts scene in New York City. This collection contains four documents: a 1987 letter from Carroll to Gerald Howard, his editor at Penguin Books, about changes to the proofs of Forced Entries: The Downtown Diaries, 1971-1973; a completed 1973 biographical questionnaire sent to Carroll by Grossman Publishers; a postcard to Barbara Preminger at Grossman, written in 1974 while Carroll was in Bolinas, California; and a 1981 agreement between Viking Penguin and Carroll regarding the publication of a paperback edition of Living at the Movies. less

Ronald I. Jacobowitz was a gay activist and community organizer in New York City. He cofounded Gay Men of the Bronx and Bronx Lesbians and Gay Men United for Political Action and organized the We Are Everywhere! conference. His papers contain files on the activities of Bronx Lesbian and Gay Men United for Political Action, chiefly regarding the organization of a 1993 City Council Candidates Forum; on the response of Gay Men of the Bronx to the article printed in The Bronx News accusing the organization of promoting male prostitution; financial records from the We Are Everywhere! conference, and photocopies of meeting minutes of the Bronx Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats (1983). The New York City Gay Men's Chorus was founded in 1979, merging with the Big Apple Gay Men's Chorus in 1980. The chorus sings in a variety of styles, and has presented a holiday concert series each year since its inception. They have produced eight recordings. Dr. Victor Hugo Paltsits (1867-1952) was an archivist, librarian, and New York State Historian who served as Keeper of Manuscripts for the New York Public Library from 1914 to 1941. Collection consists of correspondence of both a professional and personal nature; greeting cards to and from Paltsits; a certificate from the Upper Missouri Historical Expedition; drafts of an address on public records; drafts of writings; clippings and biographical material; a typescript copy of his address, "The Beginnings of Presbyterianism in Albany," and related ephemera.
