Collection consists of signed documents and miscellaneous correspondence, 1770-1831, of Richard Varick (1753-1831), an American attorney, Revolutionary War soldier, politician, and Mayor of the City of New York from 1789-1801. Most items are documents signed by Varick as Recorder of the Mayor’s Court and later as New York City mayor, including land and debtor transactions, orders, and civil appointments. Miscellaneous letters to and from Varick are of a personal, military, legal, or official nature. Revolutionary War documents include letters and vouchers regarding commissary and pay accounts, some handled in his capacity as secretary for General Philip Schuyler and later for General George Washington. Letters to Varick as an attorney at Poughkeepsie, New York in 1783 concern legal matters. Other items pertain to a personal loan to Philip Van Rensselaer, and to land transactions in New Jersey and New York City, signed by Varick or relating to the Varick family. Notable documents include a letter from kinsman A.F. (Alexander Forrester) Cochrane at New York, captain of the British ship Thetis, assuring Varick that there are no impressed American seamen on board, and a letter from E. Bertrand, commander of the French ship Sémillante, seeking the release of a crew member jailed in New York, both dated 1795. An 1830 letter to Philip Hone signed by Varick regrets that he and his aged companions in the Society of the Cincinnati are unable to march in a parade. Jonathan Lawrence (1737-1812) of Newtown, Queens County, Long Island was a New York City merchant, politician and militia officer. The Jonathan Lawrence papers, 1765-1810, contain letters written by Jonathan Lawrence, documents, and two account notebooks pertaining to the mercantile and shipping affairs of Lawrence and members of his family, 1779-1810, with two peripheral business letters, 1765-1766. Letters written by Lawrence comprise three letters to his partner at Lawrence & Tom in Dover, New York regarding shipments sent via the Hudson River, 1783-1784; a letter to Henry Livingston, 1788; and a letter to Captain Peter Hodgkinson, 1793. Documents consist of loose invoices and accounts for Jonathan Lawrence, Lawrence & Tom, and John Ireland, including customs documents for imports by Lawrence from St. Croix and St. Eustatius, 1783-1796 and undated; an order to deliver the brig Seaflower, 1787; and land conveyances by family members for property in Manhattan, 1806 and 1810. A notebook, dated 1779 at Fishkill, contains accounts with the unidentified writer's father and mother, and Thomas Fanning. A notebook for the brig Olive Branch, 1789, contains accounts for Jonathan Lawrence Jr. and Samuel Tibbals, both identified as captains, and others. less

William H. Vanderbilt (1821-1885) was a wealthy American businessman who expanded the railroad system created by his father Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1887). The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company was formed in 1869 with the merger of two Vanderbilt-controlled companies, the New York Central Railroad Company and the Hudson River Railroad Company. The manuscript (1 volume, 360 pages, partially blank, with tipped-in index and maps) is a comprehensive abstract of title of properties acquired by William H. Vanderbilt and the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company during the years 1878 to 1880, on the upper west side of Manhattan. The area encompassed 65th to 72nd Streets, between Eleventh (West End) Avenue and the westerly line of the City of New York in the Hudson River. The abstract addresses the City's title to soil under the Hudson River, associated with titles to adjacent upland properties originating in the Somarindyke, Harsen, and Boggs estates. Supporting records include abstracted colonial charters, deeds and other conveyances, wills, and court proceedings, as well as cadastral survey maps and street diagrams. The manuscript, written in a clerical hand, was probably prepared by a New York City law firm. less

Chase, Edward Everett, Hamilton Fish, Washington Hunt, Andrew Jackson, W.C. Rivers, Martin Van Buren, and others. James Duane (1733-1797) was a judge, mayor of New York City, and member of the Continental Congress. Collection contains titles to property in Albany, Franklin, Montgomery, Richmond, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Washington Counties, N.Y., New York City, and Bennington, Vt.; partition books; records of rentals; fieldbooks of surveys of Duanesburgh, N.Y.; and other land and estate papers. James Francis Ruggles (1834-1895), attorney of New York City, was secretary to New York governor Washington Hunt, 1851-1852. Accounts, 1864-1885, cover his business affairs; land papers, 1848-1891, include deeds, indentures, titles, and maps for property in New York and Louisiana; and unsorted papers contain printed materials and papers relating to his family. less

Clapp family members lived in New York City, Westchester and Dutchess Counties, N.Y., and Fairfield County, Conn. The Clapp family papers include 17th and 18th century financial records, land records, and estate records of the Clapp family of New York and Connecticut. The financial records primarily consist of promissory notes, 1722-1772, many of which relate to the debts of John Clapp. Also present are Thomas Clapp's accounting records, dating mostly from 1804-1815, and additional miscellaneous receipts and accounts. Land records relate to properties owned by the Clapps in New York City, Greenwich, Conn., 1723-1769, Westchester County, N.Y., 1705-1807, and Dutchess County, N.Y., 1740-1770. A purchase deed for land in the Bowery Ward of New York City by John Clapp is the oldest land record in the collection, dating from 1694. Estate records include wills, inventories, debts, sale accounts, and lists, notably the 1737 will of James Clapp. Family members include Benjamin, Cornby, John and James Clapp. Other family names mentioned in these documents include Cornell, Birdsall, Flamen, Franklin, Gerbrantz, Mean, Quinby, Sharpas, Vail, and Hallock. less

Charles Herman Ruggles (1789-1865), judge and congressman, was elected a representative from Poughkeepsie, New York, to the U.S. Congress, 1821-1823. He was a circuit judge and vice-chancellor of the Second Judicial District of New York, 1833-1846; and served as a judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 1847 to 1855. Collection consists of correspondence, accounts and land papers of Ruggles. Correspondence, 1821-1855, includes letters from family members and general correspondence concerning business matters, politics, the purchase of law books from New York courts, and personal affairs. Belknap, Center, Innes, and Murphy were notable names in New England as early as the 17th century. Robert Lenox Belknap, the New York businessman most prominently represented in this collection, was a direct descendant of Abraham Belknap (d. 1643), an early settler in Salem, Massachusetts; and Joseph Belknap (1630-1712) of Boston. The Center and Innes families counted author Henry Livingston and Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence, among their ancestors. Dr. Deas Murphy, father of Serena Deas Murphy Center, served as Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, N.Y. The William Conrad Kopper and Serena Deas Murphy Center genealogical research files contain family papers and genealogical research pertaining to the Belknap, Center, Innes, Murphy, and allied families. Included in the collection are genealogical notes, pedigrees, genealogical charts, as well as original family documents such as wills, contracts, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs. less

Abner Lord Ely (1805-1871) was a New York City merchant and real estate manager. He founded the real estate management firm Horace S. Ely & Company in New York City. Collection consists of general and family correspondence, legal and financial papers, and other materials relating mainly to Ely's activities as a dry goods merchant, commission agent, and manager of real estate in New York City. Correspondence, 1832-1871, received from John B. Lesieur, a socially prominent American residing in Paris, France, concerns political events in France and Europe and properties in New York which were managed by Ely. Included is correspondence with members of the Mead family and with Ely's brother John, a lawyer, regarding cases involving mercantile law being tried before the United States Supreme Court. Also, miscellaneous legal and financial papers of other members of the Ely family and a history, 1955, of the firm founded by Ely written by his lineal descendant Richard Ely Nevius. less

The minutes and observations detail discrepancies in the estate accounts that John Charles Evans, husband of Agatha Bradstreet, discovered after numerous interviews with Schuyler and others familiar with the estate, between 1783 and 1786. less

The Howard Orphanage and Industrial School was a Black-run orphanage founded in 1868 located first in Brooklyn, then Long Island. It closed in 1918.The Howard Orphanage and Industrial School records consist principally of administrative records dealing with fund raising and financial matters. The majority of the Administration series is correspondence from the office of President L. Hollingsworth Wood, primarily with other members of the board of managers, i.e., James H. Gordon and Mary Gordon, and J. H. N. Waring, superintendents; and Mansfield B. Snevily, treasurer, regarding the operation of the Orphanage and the purchase of supplies. Other correspondence is with insurance companies and creditors. Wood's general correspondence includes letters from guardians and other adults who wanted to place children in the Orphanage, and also concerns day-to-day issues. Files pertaining to the closure of the Orphanage, statements by staff, and the selling of property and equipment to pay off debts also appear in this series. less

Henry A. Bogert (1827-1905) was a New York City real estate lawyer who resided in Flushing, New York. The collection consists of three volumes of Henry A. Bogert's manuscript abstracts and property maps drawn from New York City wills, deeds, and land records, concerning the properties of many early families of New York City, Brooklyn and Flushing, New York, with citations to original court records, and genealogical notes, compiled in the late 19th century.
