Harold Prince (b. 1928), is a producer and director of theater, film and opera, but is best known for his work on Broadway musicals. Prince, who is commonly known as Hal Prince, began his career in 1948 as an assistant in the office of Broadway director and producer George Abbott. During his early years with Abbott, he made valuable connections with Robert E. Griffith, who would later become his producing partner and Ruth Mitchell, who would be his longtime assistant and production supervisor. Griffith and Prince scored a huge success in their first producing project, The Pajama Game (1954) and had many subsequent Broadway hits until Griffith's death in 1961. Prince began directing with the play, A Family Affair (1962). He has gone on to have a notably prolific career, directing and/or producing many landmark Broadway musicals, including Cabaret (1966), West Side Story (1957), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), Follies (1972), Evita (1979) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979) and The Phantom of the Opera (1987). Principal collaborators on musical theater productions include the songwriters Stephen Sondheim; Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; John Kander and Fred Ebb; Larry Grossman; Betty Comden and Adolph Green; and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In addition to musicals and plays, Prince also has directed operas and two feature films, and appeared in many documentaries and tributes; in 1974 he published an autobiography, Contradictions: Notes on Twenty-Six Years in the Theatre. This collection consists of scores to Broadway musicals directed and produced by Harold Prince from the 1950s through the 1980s, arranged alphabetically by show title and by song title within each show. In the cases of Sweeney Todd and certain conductor scores for A Doll’s Life, as noted, where the complete score existed, it has been left in running order. The bulk of the collection consists of scores from A Doll’s Life, by Larry Grossman and Betty Comden and Adolph Green, including oversized conductor scores and full orchestra parts. The collection also covers, with near completeness the scores to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita, (1979) Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s She Loves Me (1963) and Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, (1973) Side by Side by Sondheim (1977) and Sweeney Todd (1979). Michael Stewart (nee Rubin), librettist, lyricist, playwright, and novelist, was born in New York City, where he attended Queens College. He received a Master of Fine Arts in drama from Yale in 1953. Prior to his work on Broadway, Stewart wrote for television and contributed sketches and lyrics to revues. His first effort on Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie, opened in 1960 and won Stewart his first Tony as its author. During his career in the musical theater Stewart also worked on Carnival!, Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street, George M!, Barnum, I Love My Wife, Mack and Mabel, and The Grand Tour. Among his collaborators were the writer Mark Bramble, and the composers Cy Coleman, Jerry Herman, Bob Merrill and Jule Styne. less

Gerome Ragni (1935-1991) was a stage actor and musical theater lyricist and librettist active from the 1950s through the 1980s, who achieved renown as one of the authors and original stars of the musical, Hair (1968). Born Jerome Bernard Ragni in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he attended suburban Scott Township High School, where he appeared in various school productions. In 1954, Ragni made his professional stage debut in a Washington D.C. production, Shadow and Substance. His acting career was put on hold when Ragni enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955. Following his years in the Air Force, Ragni moved to New York and found work in the rapidly growing Off-Broadway theater community. In 1964, he met fellow actor James Rado, who would become a major figure in Ragni's personal and professional life. In 1965, Ragni and Rado began writing a rock musical that would depict contemporary life in New York's East Village, the hippie movement, the anti-Vietnam war protests, and the generation gap, symbolized in a central metaphor of long hair. In early 1967 they teamed up with Canadian composer, Galt MacDermot, who provided the music for their book and lyrics. Ragni and Rado's original intent with Hair was to introduce the uptown Broadway world to that other world downtown and they tried to interest mainstream musical theater producers, such as David Merrick and Hal Prince, but Joseph Papp, head of the Off-Broadway Public Theater, with whom Ragni had worked previously, was the only one interested in the project. Hair opened at the Public Theater on October 29, 1967, with Ragni in one of the lead roles, Berger. The Off-Broadway production was a critical and financial success and produced a cast album. Michael Butler, the heir to a Chicago fortune, decided to finance and produce the transfer of the show to Cheetah, a disco nightclub in the theater district in December of 1967 and eventually to Broadway. Ragni, Rado and McDermot made significant revisions to the show, writing several new songs and a largely new book. This new version of Hair opened on Broadway on April 19, 1968 to enthusiastic reviews and became phenomenally popular with audiences, running for 1,750 performances. A national tour and sit-down productions of the show played in other major US cities, as well as productions in dozens of other countries and in many different languages In 1979, Hair was made into a film directed by Milos Forman. Its hit songs, such as "Aquarius" and "Let the Sun Shine In" have been covered by many singers. After their success with Hair, Ragni and Rado played themselves in Lions Love (1969), a film by Agnes Varda about Hollywood celebrity. Ragni's next Broadway musical, another collaboration with Galt MacDermot, Dude (1973), was not successful critically or commercially. In the 1980s, the Hair trio of Ragni, Rado, and MacDermot reunited for another musical, YMCA (also titled Sun) which was not produced. The Gerome Ragni papers consist mainly of professional files pertaining to theater and film projects written by Gerome Ragni, or in which he appeared as an actor. There are items from productions Ragni acted in during school and later in New York, such as Hamlet (1964), Hang Down Your Head and Die (1964), The Knack (1964) and Viet Rock (1966) but the majority of the material in this collection pertains to the original Broadway production of Hair (1968). There is also some material on subsequent projects with which Ragni was involved, including the show, Dude (1973), and the film, Lions Love (1969). This collection also contains personal items, including correspondence with Ragni's family and friends and documents on his Air Force service. The strength of this collection is its extensive coverage of the many productions Hair in the United States and internationally, represented here with photographs, programs, posters and press materials. The collection includes material as early as 1952, when Ragni was in high school and as late as 1984. less

Charles Gross is the creator and co-host of Two on the Aisle, a review show covering the New York City theater scene that aired on cable television during the 1990s and 2000s. The Charles Gross collection of B-roll recordings contains videos of theater productions between 1995 and 2006 that were sent to Gross by press agencies for reviewing purposes (an additional performance video dates from 2019). Most productions represented in the collection played on Broadway, including Avenue Q, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, Hairspray, Man of La Mancha, Noises Off, Oklahoma!, and Wicked. less

Edward Gallardo (1949-2019) was an American writer, lyricist, and actor of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan descent born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Gallardo's best-known play, Simpson Street, was performed throughout the United States and toured in Spain, Puerto Rico, Columbia, and Mexico. Gallardo's papers date from 1910 to 2020 and chronicle mostly his work as an actor and writer through contracts, correspondence, notebooks, photographs, scrapbook albums, script drafts, and audio and video recordings. less

The AMAS Musical Theatre production files consist of documentation for thirty-six plays produced by AMAS, including both original plays and well known plays such as "It's so nice to be civilized," "Bojangles," "Jam," "Juba," "Blackberries," and "The buck stops here." Revivals have included "Bye Bye Birdie," "Carousel," and "My Fair Lady." A variety of material can be found in the files; however not every kind of material will be available for each production. The following list provides a sampling of files: attendance sheets; audition sheets, budgets, cast lists/contact sheets; casting lists and notices; contracts; costume inventories; cue sheets; equity contracts; flyers and programs; memoranda and correspondence; music and lyrics; performance reports; production schedules; rehearsal logs, schedules and reports; reviews; scene breakdown sheets; scripts-blocking/production/master/music; set design and illustrations/lighting/props; sound; stage manager's notes; and VIP lists. The Jerry Bock papers primarily document the professional activities of the prime twenty years of his composing career, as well as his later works, and do not offer much, if any, insight into his personal life. Vocal scores, lead sheets, and sketches for all of his musical productions produced on Broadway, including The Apple Tree, The Body Beautiful, Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello!, Mr. Wonderful, The Rothschilds, She Loves Me, and Tenderloin are represented in the papers. Also present are a significant number of pop songs that Bock wrote with Sheldon Harnick and Larry Holofcener in addition to many for which he supplied his own lyrics. Business correspondence can be found within the production it relates to; many productions also include documents such as notes, cast information, ticket stubs, ephemera, and photographs. The collection does not contain Bock's personal correspondence; the few personal papers here are either work or school-related. less

Collection consists of audio-visual materials representing selected productions that Jerry Bock wrote between 1960 and 2006. While there are some items containing complete audio or video productions of the shows, the majority are unpublished pre-production materials, including rehearsals, demo recordings, and "working copies" of songs, including a song about the race horse "Fly so free". There are also some documentary materials, such as awards show footage and radio shows about the productions. Many of the items are from Bock's more popular Broadway shows, including Fiddler on the Roof, The Rothschilds, She Loves Me, and Fiorello! Also represented are some of Bock's less well known works including 1040, (a show about the tax code), Happy Birthday Mr. Abbott, and Regarding the Lindsay Years, as well as many of his children's musicals including Brandon Finds his Star, The Land of Broken Toys, Danny and the Dragon, The Magic Journey, and the Adventures of Pinocchio. less

Charles Strouse is a composer of stage and film musicals, known for such musicals as Bye Bye Birdie (1960), Applause (1970) and Annie (1977). He occasionally writes his own lyrics, but usually collaborates with a lyricist. His most frequent lyricist is Lee Adams, though he has also worked with Martin Charnin, Alan Jay Lerner, Richard Maltby Jr. and Stephen Schwartz. The majority of the materials in this collection are scripts and scores from Strouse’s shows from the 1960s through 2000. The collection also includes clippings, correspondence, production files and programs. less

The Workshop of the Players Arts Foundation, Inc. (WPA) Theatre was an Off Off-Broadway theater that existed from 1971 to 2000. Kyle Renick served first as its Managing Director then, starting in 1982, as its Artistic Director. This collection consists of materials dedicated to the WPA Theatre and some personal papers from Renick. The WPA material includes production photographs, correspondence, administrative documents, awards, meeting minutes, and contracts. Renick's personal materials include his agendas from the 1980s, correspondence, clippings, photographs, non-theatrical research, and a caricature of him by Al Hirschfeld. less

Geraldine Fitzgerald (1913-2005) was an actor, director, and writer who emigrated from Ireland to New York City in 1938. She was active in film, theater and television from 1932 to 1991, receiving an Academy Award nomination for a supporting role in Wuthering Heights (1939). This collection, dating from 1944 to the 1990s (bulk dates 1970s-1990s) primarily documents Fitzgerald's work as a director and writer and, to a lesser extent, as an actor. The musical production Sharon's Grave (later retitled Sharon) is represented heavily in the files. In the early stages of the production, Fitzgerald worked closely with playwright Bill C. Davis. Her Everyman Theatre Company, a Brookyln-based street theatre company co-founded with Franscican monk Jonathan Ringkamp (1929-1986), is also represented in the collection. less

Adolph Green (1915-2002) was a lyricist and librettist of Broadway musicals, a Hollywood screenwriter and occasional performer. This collection contains his scripts and programs. The majority of the productions covered were written by Green and his constant collaborator, Betty Comden. less

Claire Joseph Nichtern (1920-1994) was an American producer of Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals in the second half of the twentieth century. The Claire Nichtern papers (1962-1987) document her professional career. The bulk of the collection consists of production files for Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals produced by Nichtern, who was president of Warner Theatre Productions from 1979-1985. The collection also contains a small amount of office files, scripts, and posters. There is very little personal material in the collection. less
