Scope and arrangement
The Edward Gallardo papers date from 1910 to 2020 (bulk dates 1970s-2000s) and recount his work as an actor, playwright, lyricist, and screenwriter. Simpson Street, Women Without Men, Fantasma, Selena, and The Petrified Prince are the most thoroughly documented projects in the papers. Most of the collection consists of libretto, lyric, manuscript, script, and screenplay drafts from Gallardo's work as a writer. Other materials related to his writing include his notebooks, scrapbook albums, and audio and video recordings featuring interviews, song demos, performances, and rehearsals. The collection holds screenplay and script drafts, ephemera, and contracts from Gallardo's acting career. His personal calendars, ephemera, photographs, and website are also in the collection.
The Edward Gallardo papers are arranged in four series:
-
1910-2019
Series I spans 1910 to 2019 and contains files generated from Gallardo's work as a playwright, lyricist, and screenwriter. The series illustrates his work on plays, musicals, teleplays, and screenplays as well as his working relationships with composers, lyricists, directors, and other writers.
The series chronicles Gallardo's writing projects from their initial inception to their production and critical reception. Produced and unproduced play and musical project files constitute the bulk of the writing projects represented in this series. The series also details Gallardo's professional relationships with agents, composers, directors, actors, and producers through correspondence, resumes, and headshots. His notebooks offer insight into his writing process. Gallardo's scrapbooks document the publicity and reception of his productions.
-
1976-2005
Series II dates from 1976 to 2005 and comprises files related to Gallardo's acting career. The files are composed of screenplay and script drafts from Gallardo's roles on television shows, motion pictures, and plays; publicity clippings; contracts; and ephemera. Most of the script drafts come from Gallardo's television work during the 1970s and 1980s.
-
1940-2020
Series III dates from 1940 to 2020 and covers Gallardo's yearly calendars, correspondence, photographs, and website. His calendars contain notations for birthdays, medical appointments, and play opening and closing dates. Gallardo's personal correspondence includes greeting cards from friends and family. Photographs depict family and friends, domestic and international travels with Bruce Taub, pets, holidays, and portraits of Gallardo.
Gallardo retained a file of political cartoon clippings from magazines and newspapers. Gallardo's personal website includes webpages of his resume, biographical information, some of his writing projects, pictures of his travels with Taub, and his pets.
-
1979-2007
Series IV spans from 1979 to 2007 and is composed of interviews; demos; reading, rehearsal, and performance recordings from stage productions and unproduced projects; home movies; and television show footage.
The bulk of the series contains readings, rehearsals, and performances of Gallardo's theatrical projects. Recordings from productions of Carmen Libre, Fantasma, Magpie, Selena, and Simpson Street are particularly well-represented in the series. Also present are several demo versions of the unproduced Star Wars musical.
The other large portion of this series consists of song demos, musical albums, and theatrical readings that various composers sent to Gallardo (titled From Various Composers in the container list). These recordings are not associated with any of Gallardo's writing projects. Of note in these recordings is an early demo of Jason Robert Brown's Songs For a New World (then titled The New World).
The series also contains Gallardo's personal home videos and footage from his work as a television actor.
