Morton Baum was the chair of City Center’s Finance Committee from 1943 to 1968. In the 1960s he became its managing director. City Center was responsible for presenting many of the most important dance, music, opera and drama companies in New York City during the middle of the 20th Century. Baum was also instrumental in bringing that same quality of the arts to the newly-formed Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Inc. The collection consists of administrative and financial material used in the creation and running of City Center. She achieved prominence as an independent modern dance performer and choreographer, but embarked on a second career as an authority on Chinese dance and martial arts traditions. During a stay in China, Delza became the first American dancer to teach modern dance technique in Chinese theater and dance schools. Following her return to the United States, she became an important tai chi instructor and advocate. She studied further under Charles Weidman and Doris Humphrey. Pinska was committed to teaching dance and movement and influenced a generation of young children though her instruction and productions. The Klarna Pinska Papers contain materials from most of her professional career, and focus on her time working as Ruth St. Denis’ assistant and her teachings in the 1960s and 1970s. The collection also contains correspondence and photographs providing insight into the life of 20th century modern dance. The music scores were used in Pinska’s works, teaching as well as her own career as a dancer. Some of the scores were property of the Denishawn School. less
