Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The collection holds programs, telegrams, photographs, biographical material, and scrapbooks containing images of stage actors from the early 1900s. less

The Summer Theatre at Mount Holyoke was founded in 1970 by James T. Cavanaugh, a professor emeritus of Theater Arts at Mount Holyoke College. Leonardo Shapiro (1946-1997) was a theater director, writer, production designer, and founder of the Shaliko Company, an experimental theater group based in New York City. The Leonardo Shapiro papers date from 1959 to 1996 and document Shapiro's work as a student at New York University (1966-1969); as the creator of the Appleseed Circus, a guerilla theater group (1969-1971); as artistic director of the Shaliko Company (1972-1992); as director of the Trinity College/La MaMa Performing Arts Program (1986-1992); and as an independent director and writer. Papers of Glover and his wife, Martha Seabrook Glover, contain personal and professional correspondence, and documents concerning the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Free-Masonry, the Oddfellows, the Republicans and Democratic parties, church groups, the A. Philip Randolph Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Fund, the Patriotic American Society, the Harlem Cultural Council, and news clippings about Glover. The Paul Cranefield Papers, 1824-2002 [bulk years 1951-2002], document medical doctor and theater enthusiast Paul Cranefield’s interest and contribution to New York City’s theatrical world, and in particular the Off-Off Broadway movement. The collection consists of administrative files created by the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and the Circle Repertory Theatre, in which Cranefield served as a board member for several years. They include correspondence, meeting minutes, notes and agendas, legal and financial records, grant applications, leaflets and brochures, production inventories, and Cranefield’s writings on subjects related to theater and collecting. There are also scripts, photographs, clippings, and a considerable number of programs and posters from productions created by La Mama and Circle Repertory Theatre, as well as from productions of the 1800s, collected by Cranefield. less

This scrapbook was possibly kept by Charles Turner of St. Louis in 1896 and 1897; consists of clippings from different newspapers about issues and events, both serious and not-so-serious, affecting Black people. Subjects in clippings include: white violence against Black workers at Hawthorne Mills, Eldorado, Arkansas; Richard T. Greener; Masons; Sandy Alexander Mix of St. Louis; O.M. Wood, principal of L'Ouverture Colored School; B.T. Washington; and the Black vote. There are programs and playbills for theatrical events, concerts, and lectures, and a poem. less

Born in Barbados, Errold Collymore immigrated to the United States in 1912 and graduated from Howard University's dental school eleven years later. His subsequent struggle to rent an office in White Plains, New York, compelled him into a life of civil rights activism which saw him organize a local NAACP chapter and become chairman of Westchester County's United Colored Republican Clubs. He was also involved with the YMCA and served on a number of committees concerned with housing equality and standards for Westchester County's black residents. Focusing on equality in the religious realm as well, Collymore and his family integrated the American Unitarian Association's White Plains Community Church when they joined its congregation in 1927. Correspondence, reports, speeches, minutes, notes, clippings, and other material document Collymore's activities at the vanguard of civil rights in Westchester County, New York. There are files for all of the major organizations with which Collymore was associated and held office, including the NAACP (White Plains Branch) and the nation-wide anti-lynching campaign; the Colored Republicans Committee with information on Black Republican activities and politics in Westchester County; the YMCA-White Plains; and American Unitarian Association (which he and his family integrated in 1927 when they joined the White Plains congregation). Correspondence and miscellaneous documents provide a glimpse into his personal and professional lives. less

Charles O. Carey (1908-1981) was a stage manager, actor, and producer in New England, Pennsylvania, and New York summer stock theatre during the mid-20th century. The Tommy Brent collection of Charles O. Carey material contains biographical material, programs, clippings, and reproductions of photographs compiled by Brent that document Carey's work in summer stock from 1927 to 1963. less

Cornelius P. Cotter was a professor of political science at Stanford University. While earning his Ph.D. in Public Administration from Harvard University, and during his first years as a professor, he worked as a general manager, business manager, and public relations director for summer stock theatre companies. From 1949 to 1956, Cotter was employed with St. John Terrell's Music Circus in Lambertville, New Jersey; Niagara Falls Summer Theatre in Niagara Falls, Ontario; and the Melody Circus Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Cornelius P. Cotter papers, dated 1949 to 1958, highlight the business end of summer stock companies through correspondence, weekly operating statements, and budget memoranda. The companies' productions are documented through programs, fliers, clippings, and photographs; also included are programs for productions of related summer stock companies working during the early 1950s. Correspondence, most of which relates to Cotter's work with St. John Terrell, discusses plans for upcoming seasons, proposals to launch new summer stock companies, and budgetary concerns for the companies. less

John "Jack" Grattan (born John O'Grattan, 1916-1999) was a young actor on Broadway, in summer stock theatre, on radio, and in motion pictures in the early 20th century. He debuted on Broadway in 1921 in Tarzan of the Apes and remained active on the New York stage while attending the Professional Children's School. Grattan moved to California in 1935 where he secured acting contracts with Universal Pictures and MGM. The John Grattan scrapbook contains photographs, clippings, and programs that document Grattan's career as a child and young adult actor. The scrapbook dates from 1920 to 1995 with the bulk of the material from 1920 to 1937. Photographs include production stills and headshots from plays, motion pictures, and Professional Children's School productions, as well as autographed headshots of Grattan's co-stars. Clippings consist of reviews of Grattan's performances and advertisements for which Grattan modeled. The scrapbook also contains congratulatory telegrams, Grattan's Equity card, an autograph book, and biographical sketches written in 1995. Randahl Hoey (born Errol Randahl Hoey) is an American theatre, opera, and television director. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in Los Angeles, where he also taught acting workshops at the Actors Center of Los Angeles. The Randahl Hoey papers contain programs, fliers, clippings, and production photographs that document Hoey's directorial and teaching work from 1981 to 1998. Clippings consist of reviews of Hoey's productions as well as advertisements for productions and acting classes he taught. Most of the programs and fliers in the collection originate from Hoey's work in Los Angeles-area theatres, but also include theatre and opera productions in San Diego, California; Portland, Oregon; Edmonton, Alberta; Anchorage, Alaska; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hoey's workshops and classes held at the Actors Center of Los Angeles are well documented through fliers and advertisements, as well as a student's letter to the Actors Center discussing the content of one of Hoey's courses. less

The Tommy Brent press files on The Immoralist, dated 1963, contain programs, press releases, talent biographical sketches, advertisement drafts, press invitation lists, reviews, correspondence, and notes that document Brent's promotion of the production. Correspondence discusses promotional agreements, while notes outline Brent's contact with print, radio, and television reviewers. less

Kenneth Fox (born Kenneth Duvall Tooill, 1896-1979) was an actor who performed on Broadway and in stock theatre companies during the 1920s. The Kenneth Fox papers document Fox's career and his longtime interest in theatre with contracts, programs, and photographs. Contracts originate from Fox's work on Broadway and in regional stock theatre companies from 1922 to 1926. Contracts for single productions list Fox's role and the show title. Programs, dated 1951 to 1962, are from popular Broadway musicals and plays of the 1950s and 1960s, including The Threepenny Opera. Photographs in the collection consist of autographed portraits of stage actors, some of whom were Fox's contemporaries. Photographs date from 1878 to the late 1920s and include portraits of Zelda Sears, Edith Kingdon, Fiske O'Hara, and Lotte Crabtree. less

Anthony Grabowski (born 1932), a New York City-based playwright, was active in the mid-20th century. The Anthony Grabowski papers date from 1962 to 1969 and document his work on two plays, With Ah! Bright Wings and The Warmth of Winter. In addition to annotated scripts of the plays, the collection contains production photographs, contracts, and a program for The Warmth in Winter; a journal entry discussing the development of With Ah! Bright Wings; and letters detailing reader reactions to drafts of both plays. less
