Benjamin Seymour, English-born industrial inventor in Massachusetts (see F. E. James Wilkinson (1757-1825) of Maryland was a United States Army officer and first governor of the Louisiana Territory. Wilkinson was implicated in the Burr Conspiracy and resigned from the Army in 1815. He was later appointed U.S. envoy to Mexico and died there in 1825. Suspicions that he had long been an agent of the Spanish government were confirmed after his death. The collection consists chiefly of letters written by Wilkinson to military personnel and politicians, especially at Fort Washington during the Northwest Indian War and later 1790s. Recipients include John Armstrong, 1792; Bartholomew Shaumburg, 1796, David Holmes, 1812, and James Monroe, 1814. Wilkinson’s letter of 1823 April 17, Mexico, to an unidentified correspondent (probably to Thomas Aspinwall, U.S. Consul in London), describes the election of Agustín de Iturbide as emperor of Mexico. Also included is Wilkinson's 1793 bill to the government for expenses of his servants, and an order of payment to James Wilkinson by Joseph Reed, 1781. less

The mercantile firm of Morris & Ludlum (active 1790s) operated a hardware store on Water Street in New York City, and also engaged in potash production in Sussex County, New Jersey. The Morris & Ludlum letter and order book, 1797-1825, contains copied letters and orders written by the hardware business at New York, 1797-1799, to merchants in Great Britain and the southern United States. These include Perry & Hayes, suppliers of a large variety of hardware, and the pewterware firm of Robert Bush & Co., both located in Bristol, England. Other commodities mentioned include iron bars, potash, flaxseed, cotton, and otter skins. The volume was later used as a ledger by James Ludlum for his farming and milling activities at Sparta, New Jersey, including transactions in his role as an administrator of his brother Gabriel Ludlum's estate. less

Eugénie de Vergès, née Choppin d'Arnouville. She was born on September 13, 1774 to René Choppin d'Arnouville, chevalier, a counsellor to Louis XV and president of the Cour des Monnaies; and his wife, Marguerite-Élizabeth de Chazot. On February 4, 1793, in Paris, she married Jacques-Claude de Vergès. Their first son, Marie Fortuné (1794-1864), was a notable civil engineer; their second son, Adolphe Florimond (1795-1875), was a councillor at the Cour de Cassation. Eugénie de Vergès died on April 4, 1843. The larger of the two volumes (89 manuscript pages; 77 total leaves + 4 loose manuscript inserts) is a commonplace book containing original poems, translations, and notes on a variety of subjects. On the front paste-down is a contemporary note ("Ouvrages de Mlle Eugénie Choppin, depuis Mde. Devergès, faits depuis l'anée 1790") and the large engraved stationer's ticket of De Lermoy, Versailles. The smaller volume (40 manuscript pages; 75 total leaves) is chiefly devoted to accounts and contains entries from 1811 to 1840; with the stationer's ticket of Niodot, Place du Vieux Louvre. William Smith (1727-1803), Episcopal clergyman and educator, was the first provost of the College of Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania) and first president of Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. William White (1748-1836), Episcopal clergyman, was the rector of Christ Church and St. Peter's Church, Philadelphia, and first presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. William Smith's letter, written at Chester, Maryland, 1786 September 11 to Rev. Dr. White at Christ Church, Philadelphia, forwards a letter (not present) from Dr. Murray; mentions his plan to go to Annapolis the following week; and asks for White's opinions, prior to the upcoming General Convention of the Episcopal Church, regarding "the requisitions of the English bishops." less

Parkin) 1781-1806, 1826, 1846, from Richard W. Parkin, brothers Joseph Winthrop and Thomas L. Winthrop, nephew Joseph A. Winthrop and brother-in-law William Parkin; letters to Mary A. Hitchcock (Mrs. John Still Winthrop Parkin) from Ethan A. Hitchcock, 1818, and Thomas Parkin, 1819, 1820; letters from Augusta Temple Winthrop (Mrs. J. Smyth Rogers) to her father Thomas L. Winthrop, brother James Bowdoin [James Bowdoin Winthrop], 1820-1828 and Mrs. James Bowdoin at Paris, 1807; letters from J. Smyth Rogers, M.D. to Thomas L. Winthrop, 1821, and to Rogers from his maternal uncle Thomas Moore of North Carolina and cousin Charles H. Moore (1844). Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was United States Secretary of the Treasury, 1795-1800; United States Circuit Court judge for the Second Circuit, 1801-1802; and governor of Connecticut, 1817-1827. Oliver Wolcott Jr. letters and documents, 1799-1826, contain three letters written or signed by him regarding government business to Governor Jedediah Huntington of Connecticut, 1799; to Governor Isaac H. Williamson of New Jersey, 1818; and to Lieutenant Colonel George Bomford, 1823; and a signed printed circular letter to the Governor of Ohio (Jeremiah Morrow), 1825, regarding state resolutions to emancipate the slaves. A personal letter to James W. Henry at Baltimore, 1807, introduces Virgil Maxcy; and a letter to Wolcott's wife Betsy with a torn date [December 1800] tells of the close electoral vote count for Burr and Jefferson in the presidential election. Oliver Wolcott Sr. (1726-1797) was lieutenant governor of Connecticut, 1786-1796, and governor, 1796-1797. He was major general of the Connecticut militia during the Revolutionary War and served in the Continental Congress. Oliver Wolcott Sr. letters and documents, 1753-1797, contain an autograph letter signed to postmaster Ezekiel Williams, 1797 March 24; a personal autograph letter signed to "Sir," 1795 June 26 at New Haven, mentioning steps taken at a meeting of the Corporation of Yale College; and a signed letter addressed to Governor Trumbull (Jonathan Trumbull, 1740-1809), 1797 October 10, regarding his inability to attend the present legislative session. Also included are six endorsements clipped from legal documents signed as Sheriff of Litchfield County, 1753-1761, and an engraved portrait of Robert Boyle with Wolcott's book ownership signature on verso. less

Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson (1737-1801) was a prominent American poet and author, known especially for the literary salon she established in colonial Philadelphia, and her association with the family estate of Graeme Park in Horsham, Pennsylvania. William Smith (1746-1822) was a Philadelphia physician and druggist. In 1775 he married Ann Young (1756-1780, also known as Anna Young), the niece of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson. He married Letitia Correy in 1783, and purchased Graeme Park from Fergusson in 1791. The collection consists of two letters dated 1778 March 20 and 1791 March 16, written by W. Smith at Philadelphia to "Dear Madam" (Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson). His letter of 1778 March 20 apprises her of efforts being made by her friends in the Pennsylvania Assembly to restore her property rights, and shares news of mutual acquaintances and the progress of the war. His letter of 1791 March 16 concerns his plans to attend a sale she was holding. less

Correspondence, business records, and miscellaneous manuscripts of members of the Callister family, chiefly Henry Callister, merchant (ca. 1716-ca. 1768) and his wife, Sarah Trippe Callister (1731-1805), including items about Mrs. Callister's schools for girls in Chestertown and Baltimore (1783-1788). Henry Callister came to Maryland as factor for Foster Cunliffe Sons, of Liverpool, England, and was resident at Oxford, Talbot County, and "Townside", an estate in Kent and Queen Anne's Counties, Md. Original manuscripts have not been counted, but photostatic reproductions fill 869 pages, plus an index volume. They contain a wealth of information concerning economic, mercantile, political, social, and cultural conditions on the Eastern Shore during the period, and include correspondence with persons in Great Britain; with Rev. Thomas Bacon (came to Maryland, 1745, d. 1768), compiler of The Laws of Maryland, organizer of the first charity school in the British colonies, and a pioneer in relations with the African American population; with Robert Morris, merchant of Talbot County, and his son, Robert Morris, Jr. (1734-1806), financier of the American Revolution; and with members of the Bolton, Bordley, Comegys, Earle, Eccleston, Goldsborough, Ridout, Gordon, Hesselius, Hollyday, Lloyd, Ringgold, Wright, and many other Maryland families. less

The collection consists of personal papers, In English and French, belonging to members of the Rolette, Hooe, Gaulthier, and other allied families and their estates. The papers predominantly relate to real property, but also include correspondence, marriage licenses, and a baptismal record. Land papers include deeds, correspondence, and other documents relating to property on or near Mackinac and Bois Blank Islands, Michigan; Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; and Quebec, Canada, owned by Mackinac Company fur trader [Jean] Joseph Rolette (1781-1842) or members of allied families or their estates, including Laurent Rolette, Joseph Rolette, Jr., Charles and Magdeleine Gaulthier, Emilie Rolette Hooe, and others. Correspondence consists predominantly of incoming letters to Joseph Rolette regarding legal matters and real estate, and of letters to Emilie Rolette Hooe, daughter of Joseph Rolette, regarding his estate, the estate of her husband, Major Alexander S. Hooe, and her own real property. A few personal letters to Hooe are also present less
