The Helen Hayes files of the Lucy Kroll Agency consist of correspondence and contracts beginning in 1956 and continuing until 1975. The papers document the relationship between Helen Hayes and especially Lucy Kroll, head of the agency. Though by no means a complete record of Helen Hayes' career the papers do give an in-depth look of the State Department tours which Helen Hayes participated in during the 1960's.

Biographical/historical information

Lucy Kroll was the owner of the Lucy Kroll Agency which was a theatrical management organization for stage and motion picture stars during the latter part of the 20th century. Helen Hayes was one of the many clients of the agency.

Scope and arrangement

The Lucy Kroll Agency files consist of the correspondence and contracts of Helen Hayes. The bulk of the collection are letters written to Lucy Kroll by Helen Hayes from 1956 through the 1970's. There are some contracts in the collection but there are many gaps and they by no means reflect Helen Hayes' long and varied career.

The Helen Hayes files are arranged in three series:

  • Series I: Correspondence from Helen Hayes
    1956-1975

    Correspondence from Helen Hayes to her agents Lucy and Nathan Kroll. The correspondence includes information of both her personal life and her professional projects.

  • Series II: Correspondence to Helen Hayes
    1960-1971

    Correspondence from business acquaintances to Helen Hayes concerning her work. Correspondents of note include: Maurice Evans, Ross Hunter, Lawrence Langner and Ellis Rabb.

  • Series III: Contracts
    1962-1971

    Contracts consist of Helen Hayes' contracts for a very small portion of her professional work. They include contracts for some of her books as well as for her Academy Award winning role of Asa Quonset in the film Airport and the pilot for the television series The Snoop Sisters. Also included is a contract for the film version of the Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur play Jumbo

The Lucy Kroll correspondence from Lillian Gish was purchased in May 1997 from Charles Apfelbaum, dealer of rare books and manuscripts.
