Log of a voyage of the Lawrance, Abraham Dumaresq, commander, from Gravesend, England to Holland, and on to Loango, on the west coast of Africa. Departure with slaves aboard for delivery to Buenos Aires, followed by a return toward England with a cargo of hides. In addition to routine entries of longitude, latitude, and wind conditions, log notes deaths of slaves aboard.

This portion concludes in Philadelphia in 1835 The second section served as Menzies' diary from June 19-September 20, 1839 and contains an account of a journey from Philadelphia through Scotland, Ireland, England, France, and return via New York The third section, "Jock's Notions," contains poems and other entries, primarily in Scotch dialect, relating to local happenings and people in Pennsylvania. Samuel Galloway (1720-1785) was a merchant of West River, Maryland. He married Ann Chew (1725-1756) with whom he had four children, John, Benjamin, Mary and Anne. John (d.1810), also a merchant, acted as executor for the estate of his sister Mary's husband, Thomas Ringgold, Jr. of Chestertown, Maryland. The collection consists of letters, 1739-1812, chiefly to Samuel Galloway (1720-1785) and his son John Galloway (d.1810) relating to trade in slaves, tobacco, flour, wine, horses, and general merchandise as well as to family affairs. Included also are John Galloway's account book, 1777-1780, kept as executor of the estate of his brother-in-law, Thomas Ringgold, Jr. and other miscellaneous acounts, dating chiefly from 1793. Correspondents include Thomas Ringgold (1715-1772) of Chestertown, Maryland, and members of the extended Galloway, Ringgold, Chew, and Tilghman families.

This logbook was kept on board the U.S.S. Boxer by Timothy Gay, midshipman in the United States Navy, from March 13-July 18, 1816. The ship was commanded by Lieutenant John Porter. Entries describe cruises between Havana and New Orleans. Around April 7, the Argus crew boarded and detained the Carthagenian Privateer "Comet," finding a cargo of gold and silver bars, and fourteen slaves taken from Saint Andrew Island. An entry describes two men found guilty of murder of the Governor of Saint Andrew Island. On June 3, Argus crew boarded the Brig "Hunter," from Cadiz, and learned that and officer and three men on the U.S.S. "Constellation" had been killed by the Spanish at Port Mahon and the American squadron there had been ordered to leave. Mentions ships carrying rum and sugar to foreign ports. Log is incomplete

Correspondence, 1772-1836, is largely political, focusing on constitutional issues, Monroe's diplomatic assignment in France, Virginia politics, treaty negotiations with Great Britain, France and Spain, the slave trade, and Bank of the United States. Also discussed are foreign policy and war issues. He left the party over the slavery question and became a Republican supporter. He edited and wrote political commentary for several newspapers in Connecticut. Collection consists of correspondence, official papers and writings of Welles. Bulk of the collection is correspondence mainly related to his public life and duties. Benjamin Ricketson Tucker (1854-1939) was the publisher of the anarchist publication Liberty from 1881 to 1908, and The Radical Review, 1877 and 1878; owner of the Unique Bookshop in New York City; specialist in and translator of Pierre Joseph Proudhon; and publisher of works considered radical at the time, such as Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata, and Oscar Wilde's Ballad of Reading Gaol. After his bookstore was destroyed by fire in 1908, Tucker moved to France and lived there until his death. Collection consists of correspondence, business and personal records, manuscripts of Tucker's translations from Proudhon, scrapbooks, photographs, material concerning his relationship with Victoria Claflin Woodhull, and anarchist books, periodicals and pamphlets. Correspondence, some of which is in French, dates from ca. 1866 to 1950. Tucker's correspondents were friends, political colleagues, readers of Liberty, and representatives of journals, publishing houses, and various organizations. Miscellaneous papers, 1870s-1930s, include records of the Unique Bookshop, of Liberty and The Radical Review, and of Tucker's activities as a book publisher; photographs (chiefly cabinet card and carte de visite portraits) of radicals and others, notably major European cultural figures; biographical miscellany of a variety of political and cultural figures; manuscript of Tucker's autobiography; and autobiographical file with correspondence, notes, essays, and other personal papers. Scrapbooks, 1870s-1930s, contain clippings of articles on political, literary and other topics. Also, large group of anarchist books, periodicals and pamphlets, 1860s-1970s, in various languages; some engineering books; books and pamphlets published by Oriole Press; and books and other printed materials on medical matters.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Periodical Collection was initially composed of periodicals collected by the International Gay Information Center (IGIC) and donated to the New York Public Library in 1988. In subsequent years, additional titles were added to the collection. Most notably, periodicals from the Barbara Gittings and Kay Tobin Lahusen Collection were added. While this additional material expanded the holdings of titles already represented in the collection, new titles were also acquired. Most of the periodicals can be requested in the Manuscripts and Archives Division. Titles followed by a call number (e.g., *ZAN-1234) should be requested from the Microforms Division, Room 100. There are also many GLBT periodicals held by other units of the New York Public Library. Most of these can be found in the online catalog.

Collection consists of letters, documents and transcripts relating to the discovery, conquest and colonization of Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, the Moluccas, and the Philippines; and to the Casa de Contratación and the Council of the Indies. Correspondents include the kings of Spain and their emissaries in the New World. Transcripts are from the 1780s and mostly in the hand of Antonio de Ugina. They appear largely to duplicate other transcripts in the Muñoz Collection at the Biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid. In some cases, however, they are believed to be the only surviving copies of documents.
