George William Gordon (1801-1877) served as United States Consul in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Collection consists of correspondence, confirmation of Gordon's appointment, and tabulated statements relating to American ships arriving at and departing from Rio de Janeiro, 1840-1846. Topics of correspondence include political matters, postal service in Boston, Daniel Webster, and the slave trade. Also, correspondence, 1844-1845, with U.S. Dept. of State concerning Gordon's controversy with Henry A. Wise, U.S. Minister to Brazil.
