Scope and arrangement
The Claude McKay literary property records consist of contracts, correspondence, permission requests, and royalty statements from McKay's literary estate, under the management of Carl Cowl (1948-1997) and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (2002-2013). The collection documents the efforts of McKay's daughter, Hope McKay Virtue, Cowl, and the Schomburg Center to keep the novels and poetry of McKay in print after his death and bring unpublished works into print.
The Claude McKay literary property records are arranged in two series:
-
1931-2002
-
1999-2013
