Scope and arrangement
The collection contains 112 audio recordings and eleven videos relating to Horne's career, dating from 1970 to 2003. The original format of the audio recordings was cassette, with many items containing two or more parts. Some items with multiple recordings have been described separately. Square brackets indicate unclear spelling. Recordings are audio unless described otherwise. Dates reflect the date of broadcast unless otherwise noted, and incomplete dates are noted in the items' descriptions.
The collection comprises audio recordings and videos that reflect Horne's wide-ranging career, including appearances on radio and television as a scholar and political commentator; appearances as a radio host on a number of WBAI programs; appearances on radio and television as a candidate for Senate; conference appearances as a leading scholar; and videos and audio recordings collected in the course of his extensive research. Research subjects reflected in the collection include the 1965 Watts Uprising; race and trade unionism; censorship and the Hollywood blacklist; race and the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II; and liberation movements in southern Africa. Notable figures appearing in the collection include Herb Boyd, John Henrik Clarke, Harold Cruse, Howard Dodson, Vicki Garvin, David Graham Du Bois, Shirley Graham Du Bois, Theo-Ben Gurirab, David Hilliard, and Andima Toivo ya Toivo.

The series contains fifteen audio recordings and one video of broadcast appearances by Horne, organized chronologically by broadcast date. They include radio interviews about Horne's publications, including Fire This Time: The Watts Uprising and the 1960s (1995), Class Struggle in Hollywood: Moguls, Mobsters, Stars, Reds, and Trade Unionists (2001), and Race War! White Supremacy and the Japanese Attack on the British Empire (2003). Additionally, Horne appears as a guest to offer analyses of current events, global politics, and history. A video includes an appearance by Horne in a television program segment. Item titles reflect program titles unless otherwise noted.

The series contains twelve audio recordings of radio shows hosted by Horne, and radio advertisements, organized chronologically by broadcast date. They include programs he hosted such as the WBAI programs Behind the News and Monday Talk Back. He also guest hosted episodes of Family Tree. Horne interviews notable figures such as Herb Boyd, a journalist and author; David Graham Du Bois, a journalist; and David Hilliard, a former Black Panther. Three recordings are radio advertisements likely collected by Horne in the course of his work as a radio program host.

The series contains thirty-seven audio recordings of oral history interviews and research notes, organized alphabetically by title or interviewee's last name. Recordings include oral history interviews that Horne conducted as part of research into subjects such as the life of Ferdinand Smith, a Jamaican trade unionist and co-founder of the National Maritime Union (NMU); the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II; and the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO Party of Namibia), a Namibian independence movement and later a political party. The series also contains copies of oral histories from the Fisk University Library Oral History Program, and Horne's research note self-recordings.

The series contains seven recordings about Horne's 1992 California Senate campaign, including interviews, speeches, and radio spots. They are arranged alphabetically by title. Horne discusses the progressive policies that comprise his platform; the Peace and Freedom Party; and his opponent, Democrat Dianne Feinstein.

The series contains nineteen audio recordings of Horne's appearances at three academic conferences, two of which are unidentified. They are arranged chronologically. The bulk of the series is comprised of recordings from the three-day conference "Japan's Challenge to US Hegemony" (JCUSH), held at University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara) in 1990. They include opening and closing statements by Horne, eleven paper presentations, comments by fourteen scholars, and question and answer sessions. The title of the conference has been abbreviated throughout.

The series includes numerous items collected by Horne in the course of his research on the Hollywood blacklist. The Hollywood blacklist was a period from the late 1940s to the early 1960s when actors, screenwriters, directors, musicians, and other professionals were barred from employment in Hollywood based on their ongoing or past membership in, alleged membership in, or perceived sympathy with the Communist Party USA (CPUSA).
