John Holler (1904-1977) was an organist and choir director from New York City. He performed in churches for most of his career, occasionally participating in secular concerts, as well. Holler also composed and arranged music for the organ. The John Holler Papers include scores, programs, clippings, photographs and other professional materials.
John Holler (1904-1977) was an organist, choir director, composer and arranger. He worked primarily in churches, although he did, especially early in his career, perform in the occasional secular concert. While Holler performed in churches around the United States, he worked most often around his home in Queens, New York. He composed religious music for the organ, as well as adapting and arranging other composers’ work for his instrument. Holler also served as treasurer for the American Guild of Organists. After an accident which damaged his hand, he retired from playing the organ in 1961.
The John Holler Papers include numerous scores composed or adapted by Holler. There are also clippings, programs and other professional records. The small amount of correspondence is largely professional, though there are some personal messages. There is also extensive documentation of Holler’s relationship to ASCAP as a composer, including contracts, correspondence, reports and statements.
The John Holler Papers were donated to the Music Division in 1996 by Michael Delesio.
