Carolyn Leigh, lyricist, wrote lyrics for many well-known Broadway productions including Peter Pan, How Now Dow Jones, Little Me and Wildcat . The collection contains scores from some of her notable Broadway shows as well as scores from a variety of her songs.

Biographical/historical information

Carolyn Leigh, lyricist, was born 21 August 1926 in New York. She wrote lyrics for the Broadway shows Peter Pan, Wildcat, How Now Dow Jones and Little Me as well as for a tribute to labor commissioned by the United States Department of Labor entitled Something to Do. She also wrote for television and numerous popular songs including Young at Heart, Witchcraft and Firefly. Among her principal collaborators were Cy Coleman, Mark 'Moose' Charlap, John Richards, Philip Springer, Elmer Bernstein, Morton Gould and Lee Pockriss. Ms. Leigh died in 1983 in New York and was inducted posthumously into the Song Writers' Hall of Fame in 1985.

Scope and arrangement

The Carolyn Leigh Scores consists of published copies of many of her works. Productions documented in the collection include Little Me, Peter Pan and Wildcat which starred Lucille Ball. Some of the individual scores are by Cy Coleman, Lee Pockriss, Philip Springer and Morton Gould and include Witchcraft, Young at Heart and Firefly. There are some arrangements of Coleman - Leigh works in German.

The Carolyn Leigh scores are arranged in two series:

  • Series I: Scores
    1910 - 1982
    1.25 linear feet. 5 boxes

    This series, divided into two sub-series contains scores of individual songs as well as scores from songs of Broadway productions, most with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh. Included are Little Me, Wildcat, Peter Pan and How Now Dow Jones. Motion pictures include The Cardinal and Father Goose. Other songs include Firefly, Witchcraft and Young at Heart.

  • Series II: Song Books, ca.
    1958 - 1976

    This series, divided into two sub-series contains song books in English and German with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh.
