Scope and arrangement
Antony Tudor, choreographer and teacher, was born in London and studied ballet with Marie Rambert beginning in 1928, choreographing his first ballet for her Ballet Club in 1931. At the invitation of Richard Pleasant, he came to the United States in 1940 to work with Ballet Theatre. He worked with other companies internationally, but his base remained the United States. The papers in this collection contain material from 1908-1987 (bulk dates 1985-1987).|||The Correspondence Series (II) and the Notes/Notebooks-Tudor Ballets Series (III) are perhaps the most significant of this collection. See Series Descriptions for more detailied information on these two series.

The Correspondence Series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and contains letters which are to, from or about Tudor. Some of the letters are copies but most are original. The correspondence covers the period 1939-1987, but most of the letters are from 1986-1987. A letter from Sarah Woodcock contains xeroxes of 1934 Mercury Theatre programs of Marie Rambert's group and Vauxhall Gardens. Some correspondence was received in subject files and remains in the pertinent folders: i.e. there are letters in the files for Dim Lustre, Pillar of Fire, Sunflowers, and Undertow. For example, a letter in the Sunflowersfolder from Tudor to Isabel Mirrow (11/12/85) contains this, “...also, to be remembered that, as in all Tudor pieces, the torso is the most important part of the body, and the legs move in order that the body shall be carried where it needs to go...”
