The Glenn Carrington Papers document the personal life of an African-American homosexual from the 1920's to the 1960's, before the advent of the gay pride movement. Among Carrington's friends and acquaintances were Alain Locke; sociologist Ophelia Settles Egypt, a fellow student at Howard University; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana, grandson of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and a "surrogate" mother to Carrington, Georgia Douglas Johnson. There is correspondence related to Carrington's position as a parole officer and as a psychological social worker. Many of the young men Carrington counseled remained friends with him throughout his life and frequently corresponded with him. The correspondence between Carrington and the young men is included in the collection. There is also correspondence with Carrington's gay male friends. less

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

The Gay Men of African Descent, Inc. records (1986 - 1998) document the development of the largest black, gay-run, educational, social and political organization in the United States. Records include board of directors materials, a fairly comprehensive collection of newsletters, and information on GMAD's funding sources. Documentation on the organization's earliest years are augmented by transcripts of oral history interviews with both early and active members. less

The Richard Plant Papers document the literary activity and academic career of the author and educator best known for his book The Pink Triangle (1986), a study of the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, research files, news clippings, personal papers, printed matter, photocopies, photographs and audio recordings. Robert Giard (1939-2002) was an American photographer best known for his portraits of LGBTQ+ writers, artists, and activists. Giard kept written records of his photo shoot sessions with sitters, memorializing in detail his impression of each individual person and the experience of photographing them. The Robert Giard notebooks, which date from 1986 to 1999, comprise seven notebooks containing Giard's portrait session notes. less

The Gilbert Price collection consists primarily of printed material. The collection contains several drafts of a biographical essay about Price written by Allen Warren Smith, a close friend and business associate, and administrative records of Variety Recording Studios, which Smith directed, relating to the Price's career. There are also programs and playbills for productions in which Price held a leading role, newspaper clippings and reviews about Price, along with a ledger of his personal finances kept by Smith. Founded in 1986 in New York City by Reverend Charles Angel (1952-1986), Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) works to build coalitions to address and combat homophobia and racism, as well as HIV/AIDS.
