Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) was founded in 1986 by the Reverend Charles Angel to build coalitions that would address and combat homophobia and racism, as well as HIV/AIDS. The organization represented the largest constituency of black gay men on the East Coast, and is the nation's largest and oldest black gay organization dedicated exclusively to the welfare of black gay men. GMAD implemented its mission to empower black gay men through education, social support, political advocacy, and health and wellness promotion, via a wide range of programs targeting black "Men Who Have Sex With Men" (MSM) in the New York City metropolitan area. The Gay Men of African Descent moving image collection consists of eighteen video recordings including the short film Party, and numerous takes of scenes for the film.
