Founded in 1986 in New York City by Reverend Charles Angel (1952-1986), Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) works to build coalitions to address and combat homophobia and racism, as well as HIV/AIDS. The collection consists of eighteen video recordings including an HIV/AIDS awareness short film Party produced by GMAD and AIDSFILMS, and numerous takes of scenes for the film.
Founded in 1986 in New York City by Reverend Charles Angel (1952-1986), Gay Men of African Descent (GMAD) works to build coalitions to address and combat homophobia and racism, as well as HIV/AIDS. GMAD is the largest and oldest African American organization dedicated exclusively to the welfare of Black gay men. Its mission is to empower gay men of African descent in New York City through education, advocacy, health and wellness promotion, and social support.
In 1993, GMAD collaborated with AIDSFILMS to produce Party, an HIV/AIDS awareness short film for safe sex educators and community organizations to use as a guide in HIV prevention outreach. The film was written by playwright Alan Sharpe and directed by Charles A. Sessoms. It is considered the first safer sex film produced by Black gay men for Black gay men.
The Gay Men of African Descent, Inc. moving image collection consists of eighteen video recordings including the short film Party, and numerous takes of scenes for the film. They are arranged by stages of production and in the sequence indicated in original documentation. Multiple items include duplicates of scenes found in other items.
