The collection consist primarily of notes, correspondence, charts, clippings, and miscellaneous printed material, ca. 1940s-1970s, produced by J. Crawford Hartman's and his wife, Helen Blanchard Hartman's genealogical research on the Blanchard family. The Barker, Countiss, Dyckman, Green, Hall, Robbins, Seitzinger, Shurburne, and Vermilye families are treated to a lesser extent. Also present are correspondence of Rev. E.B. Blanchard, Rev. Silas M. Blanchard, and other members of the Blanchard family concerning the family's genealogy; appointments, leases, deeds and wills, 1744-1818, of the Davidson, Blanchard, Nutte and Robbins families; and portrait photographs.. less

Franklin Marion Gentry, scientist and author of Manhasset, Long Island, New York, was born on March 10, 1898 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He married Violet Dewey Young on August 6, 1925 in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born on June 24, 1900 in Lexington. They had one daughter, Courtenay Dewey Gentry, born on January 18, 1931 in New York City. Franklin M. Gentry was the son of Franklin Marion Gentry I (1853-1904) of Kentucky and Helen Norton Harrison (1864-1933) of Georgia. Gentry I and Harrison were married on June 30, 1897 in New Orleans. The Gentry family in America began with Nicholas Gentry I and his brother Samuel who came to Virginia as British soldiers around 1677. The Gentry Collection is primarily research correspondence and notes of Franklin Marion Gentry who was compiling genealogical information on all lines of his and his wife, Violet Dewey Young's, families in order to secure memberships in the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution for his wife and daughter. Some of the research was conducted by Lillie Baker Young (Mrs. Samuel Arthur), mother of Violet. The bulk of this material is from the early 1950s. The collection also includes photocopied documents such as wills, military payment records, indenture records and land claims from the 18th and 19th century and even as early as 1675. These are all photocopies or transcriptions made in the 1950s for research purposes. Other papers include photocopied articles from reference books on the genealogy of specific families, lineage charts, and photocopies of coats of arms for various families. There are also a few clippings, photos, and maps, and a small amount of printed material. Other family names with more than one folder of material besides Gentry, Young, Dewey and Harrison are Adams, Allan, Brooks, Foster, Harris, Norton, Smith, Terrell and Thruston. The ancestors of the Polk Family, Jim and Amey, their daughter, Judah, and her husband, Kit, along with their children, upon reaching the age of twenty-one), were emancipated in 1840. This occurred one and one-half years after the death of their master, plantation owner Thomas Smelly, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The newly-freed Smelly family left Virginia that same year, according to the law prohibiting freed slaves to remain in the state more than one year, and migrated to New Jersey. At some point the family changed their name from Smelly to Smiley. In New Jersey, the Smiley family met another freed family from Maryland, the Polks, and the two families intermarried. By 1993, Amey and Jim Smiley had over one hundred descendants. The Smiley-Polk family documents consist of nine holograph 19th-century documents relating to the emancipation of the ancestors of the Smiley-Polk family of New Jersey, and other items concerning the genealogy of this family. less

Geoffrey Ward is the author of A Disposition to Be Rich, a biography of his great-grandfather, Ferdinand Ward, who ran a fraudulent Wall Street investment firm from 1880 to 1884. The Geoffrey Ward collection on Ferdinand Ward and the Ward family (1825-2012) consists of material collected and created by Geoffrey Ward in preparation of the book. The collection documents the activities of Ferdinand Ward and his extended family from the 1810s to 1949 through original family correspondence, legal documents, newspaper articles, and Geoffrey Ward's research notes, among other materials. less

Antonia Cottrell Martin became one of the first African American flight attendants for Pan American World Airways in 1967. She helped found the Jean Sampson Scott Greater New York Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society and established the Foundation for African American Women.
