Scope and arrangement
The Van Schaick family indentures, bonds, and other material dates from 1771 to the 1990s and cover various economic transactions between members of the family, local families, and business entities. The bulk of the collection involves documents related to Gerret (sometimes spelled Gerrit or Garret) G. Van Schaick's business transactions dating from 1800 to 1842. These documents include indentures, property leases, quit claims, bonds, receipts, deeds, appraisals, and inventories. The rest of the collection holds documents tracing Sherar's lineage to the Van Schaick family, along with their receipts, bonds, and indentures.
Business entities mentioned in the documents include the Bank of Berrington, Brinkerhoff & Catler, Hart & Haskins, Rensselaerswyck, Troy Wool Cotton Factory, and various doctors and mills. Harry Betts, John Fonda, Peter Fonda, William Fonda, Gerrit Van Schaick (GVS) Quackenbush, Philip Schuyler, Stephen Van Rensselaer, and Goose Van Schaick are some of the people mentioned by name in the documents.
The collection also features copies and transcriptions of documents related to Gerret G. Van Schaick's death such as his last will and testament, legal assignments, death notice, estate appraisal, and list of items sold after his death. There are baptism and birthdate records, a copy of Goose (Gerret Goose's father; sometimes spelled Goosen) Van Schaick's last will and testament, a Writ of Fieri Facias that mentions Sheriff Thomas Turner, Daughters of the American Revolution lineage sheets for Marian Barnes and Helen Burton Coon Thomas, Van Schaick genealogy documents, and an email to Cynthia Sherar about Christina Barringer from the 1990s.
Arrangement
Sherar organized the collection by G. G. Van Schaick, Goosen Van Schaick, Van Den Bergh, and Wyatt/Koon.
