The Robert Fulton Collection consists of manuscript letters and documents by or relating to him, including photostat copies of items held in private collections, chiefly concerning steam navigation. Miscellaneous items include a drawing of a torpedo detonator and a lease signed by his father, 1767. The collection is an artificial amalgamation of Fulton materials acquired through donations and purchases.

The Life of Robert Fulton (New York: Kirk & Mercein, 1817) compiled by Thomas Addis Emmet in 1887. Inserted material depicting Fulton’s life and work consists of original manuscript letters and documents, 1767-1829, and numerous 18th and 19th-century engraved and lithograph portraits and views. A watercolor drawing by Fulton of ship boilers appears on the verso of his letter of 1808 October 12 (1 leaf only). The imprint also contains small engraved Fulton portraits and steamboat pictures added as inlaid vignettes.

Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851) of Roxbury, Massachusetts was a politician, militia officer, author and horticulturist. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, he was the son of Henry Dearborn (1751-1829), an American army officer and statesman, and Dorcas Osgood Marble. The Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn writings comprise six scrapbook volumes containing his published writings, speeches, and reports, and Dearborn's collected papers regarding his role in the 1842 Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island. The volumes were compiled by Dearborn for his family between 1844 and 1849; contents date from 1806 to 1849. Horticulture and American politics and government are the chief topics represented in his writings. A few illustrations, mostly botanical, are found within.

His papers include working versions of cartoons in draft form (from ideas supplied by McCallister, and/or with captions subsequently supplied by McCallister) by a number of well-known cartoon artists for The New Yorker. Particularly well represented are Chon Day, Mischa Richter, Robert Day, Perry Barlow, Alain, and Barney Tobey, as well as drawings by McCallister himself. Also included are three original drawings by Peter Arno (one badly torn) and two by George Price. Gertrude Finkel (1898-1994) was a librarian with The New York Public Library, associated for many years with the Library's Hamilton Fish Park Branch on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Branch opened in 1909 at 388 East Houston Street, serving a predominantly immigrant population. It closed in 1958 to prepare for removal to a new location, reopening at 415 East Houston Street in 1960. The collection consists of a scrapbook (1 volume, disbound), dated 1931-1963, containing watercolor drawings and pasted photographs and clippings depicting activities at the Hamilton Fish Park Branch Library, accompanied by some loose items and personal correspondence of Gertrude Finkel, dated 1940-1970. Content focuses on reader services and community programs at the Branch, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, evoking the ethnic makeup of the Lower East Side, especially its Jewish heritage. A few later staff photos mark the transition from the "old HF" to the new location.

The collection consists of ten miscellaneous letters, most of them written by or directed to persons living in Connecticut during the 1850s and 1860s, touching on family matters, friendship, illness, employment, and the Civil War. Three brief letters written by relatives of Squire Gilbert and Warren Gilbert, dated 1853-1857, are directed to them at Westport, Connecticut. Two letters are addressed to Moss family members at Monroe, Connecticut, consisting of a letter written jointly by Jesse and Narcissa Moss at Jubilee, Illinois, 1861, with two loose pencil drawings of a bird and a squirrel on similar paper stock, and a letter written by Amos Moss at West Cheshire, Connecticut, 1863. Also present are five letters written by men and women, 1861-1864 and undated, which are only partly identifiable. Most items are accompanied by typed transcripts.
