Louis D. Carman (1860-1936) was a medical examiner in the United States Bureau of Pensions and a collector of Lincolniana. His father, Ezra Ayer Carman, was a Civil War officer. The Louis D. Carman collection dates from 1828 to 1923 and consists of items accumulated by Louis D. Carman, specifically correspondence and autographs; a friendship album containing poetry; and handwritten excerpts transcribed from books about fishing. A variety of documents bear the signatures of politicians and federal government officials; military generals; and businessmen. Some of the letters reference the Civil War and government and politics during the Reconstruction period. Other correspondence pertains to the Cosmos Club in Washington D.C. less

Baron Edward de Lebzeltern-Collenbach was a member of the aristocratic Lebzeltern family of the Austrian Empire. His father, Francis, and uncle Louis were associates of Prince Metternich. Edward entered the diplomatic service in 1835 in London and then was transferred in 1844 to the Austrian legation in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was assigned to the Italian states of Parma and Modena in 1854 and then went to Lisbon in 1857. His daughter Marie married into the Portuguese aristocracy and his son Victor settled in the U.S. Collection contains correspondence, biographical essay, autograph album, and printed matter by and about members of the Lebzeltern family. Bulk of the correspondence consists of letters, 1834-1863, written by Edward to his father, providing an almost daily account of his activities while he was in London, St. Petersburg, Lisbon, and other European cities. Other correspondence, 1844-1925, includes letters written by various members of Edward's family. Also, essay on the life of Jacques Casanova, autograph album, death notices, and eulogies. less

William Greenleaf Webster (1805-1869), an American editor and publisher, was the son of lexicographer Noah Webster. He participated in the editing, publication and sale of his father's dictionaries and other books. Collection consists of correspondence, business papers, diaries, writings, legal documents, family papers, photograph, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1820-1865, concerns family and personal matters, Noah Webster's estate, and the copyright, production and sale of his books. Business papers, 1833-1863, include legal agreements with publishers, account books and other materials documenting William G. Webster's role in promoting his father's works. Charles F.W. Behm (1813-1882) was a German-born merchant sea captain who served as a U.S. Navy officer during the Civil War. Collection consists of correspondence, naval orders, report, autograph album, photograph, and memorabilia of Charles F.W. Behm. Correspondence concerns Behm's appointments and promotion, naval etiquette, and personal matters. Of particular note are his report and correspondence about Civil War naval battles. less

Sarah Yardley Beers (1876-1946) was the great-niece of abolitionist James Miller McKim (1810-1874) and his wife Sarah A. McKim (1813-1891). Born in North Carolina, Sarah McKim Yardley was the daughter of Ellen Mulvany (1843-1924) of Millersville, Pennsylvania and William Buckman Yardley (1848-1885) of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Her mother married Edwin Ruthven Armstrong in 1886. In 1904 Sarah McKim Yardley married businessman Louis Gilbert Beers (1862-1935). Sarah Yardley Beers, as she was known, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an officer of the Broad Seal Chapter of Trenton, New Jersey. The Sarah Yardley Beers family papers, 1807-1983, comprise her genealogical correspondence and research papers relating to her maternal ancestry, particularly the McKim, Miller and Mulvany families of Pennsylvania; her mother's school autograph album and photograph album; family photographs and certificates; clippings and ephemera; and a Bible containing Miller family data and her parents' wedding certificate. Also present is a small amount of genealogical correspondence of her son Yardley Beers, 1965 and 1983; an engraved portrait of Lucy McKim Garrison by Gustav Kruell, circa 1890s; and printed materials. less

Highlights of the collection include an important portion of the "Ktaadn" section of The Maine Woods; "Nature and Bird Notes, " a journal kept by Henry, John and Sophia Thoreau with leaves, grass and wild flowers laid in; and Thoreau's famous letter to his brother addressed to Sachem Hopeful of Hopewell and signed Tahatawan. The Berg also has a daguerrotype of Thoreau ("my friends think [it] is pretty good though better looking than I"), a pencil made by him (his father's company manufactured them), and an original pencil map of Walden Pond. less
