The collection consists of personal correspondence and documents of members of the Winthrop family of New London and Boston, and related Parkin, Rogers, and Moore families, comprising: letters to Mary Winthrop (Mrs. Richard W. Parkin) 1781-1806, 1826, 1846, from Richard W. Parkin, brothers Joseph Winthrop and Thomas L. Winthrop, nephew Joseph A. Winthrop and brother-in-law William Parkin; letters to Mary A. Hitchcock (Mrs. John Still Winthrop Parkin) from Ethan A. Hitchcock, 1818, and Thomas Parkin, 1819, 1820; letters from Augusta Temple Winthrop (Mrs. J. Smyth Rogers) to her father Thomas L. Winthrop, brother James Bowdoin [James Bowdoin Winthrop], 1820-1828 and Mrs. James Bowdoin at Paris, 1807; letters from J. Smyth Rogers, M.D. to Thomas L. Winthrop, 1821, and to Rogers from his maternal uncle Thomas Moore of North Carolina and cousin Charles H. Moore (1844). Also included are a genealogical record of the Moore family of New York City and other locations by John Moore, 1819, copied 1839, with additions; a bond from John Chew of New London to James Bowdoin of Boston, 1769, endorsed by Elizabeth Temple, 1806; and an insurance policy for the brig Neptune, 1798. A note records the death of "my dear Mr. Parkin" on 6 September, with a copied memorial to William Stewart and Richard W. Parkin, taken from the press during the yellow fever epidemic of 1798. less

The Mercantile Collection, 1726-1950, is a synthetic collection documenting mercantile and other business activities from the early-17th to the mid-20th centuries, especially in the northeastern United States. It consists of papers and records created by persons, firms, and companies engaged chiefly in trade, finance, insurance, mining, railroad management, shipping, and whaling. A few items pertain to manufacturing and real estate. Transatlantic commerce in the colonial and early-national period, and the early railroad industry in America, are strongly represented. Notable material includes the assorted papers of New York City and Philadelphia merchants, among them members of the Pemberton family of Philadelphia; Vice-Admiralty court proceedings; and the incomplete ledger of an 18th-century New York City druggist. less

George B. (George Burbank) Ripley (1801-1858) of Norwich, Connecticut was a lawyer, landowner, and judge. He was the son of druggist Dwight Ripley (1764-1835) and Eliza Coit Ripley (1772-1846), the daughter of Captain William Coit (1735-1821) of Norwich. George B. Ripley married Hannah Gardiner Lathrop in 1825. The George B. Ripley papers, 1768-1854, consist of business documents pertaining to land holdings and investments of Ripley family members, particularly Dwight Ripley, George B. Ripley and his wife Hannah, and Georges siblings James L. Ripley and Jane Ripley. The documents are arranged chronologically within three groups: plots and surveys of lands in Norwich and Preston, Connecticut, 1768-1841; deeds and other land conveyances between Ripley family members and others, chiefly in Norwich and Preston, 1802-1854; and miscellaneous documents, 1823-1844. These include insurance policies; investment agreements; sales of shares in whaling voyages; several court documents connected to George B.
