Papers document Sprague's career as an inventor and engineer in the field of rail transportation from his days as a U.S. Naval Academy cadet until his death in 1934. Papers consist chiefly of his correspondence and business records of his companies, the Sprague Electric Railway and Motor Company, Sprague Electric Company, Sprague Electric Elevator Company, Société Française Sprague, and Sprague Safety Control and Signal Corporation. Company records, 1884-1933, include correspondence, memoranda, technical reports, blueprints, diagrams, photographs, patent applications, patent interference case files, and laboratory and shop records. His work as a consulting engineer and his participation in several professional organizations are also documented, particularly his work for the Electric Traction Commission of the New York Central Railroad, 1902-1906, and for the U.S. Naval Consulting Board, 1915-1923. Papers also include copies of his speeches and writings, personal notebooks, numerous scrapbooks of clippings and printed material about his inventions and rail transportation in general, and a small series of personal papers, including personal and household correspondence, portraits, genealogical material on the Sprague family, ephemera, tributes, and awards.

Holger Cahill (born Sveinn Kristjan Bjarnarson in Iceland) was an American novelist, curator of important art exhibitions at the Newark Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, folklorist, and national director of the Federal Arts Project, 1935-1943. The papers chiefly document Cahill's career as a novelist during the 1940s and 1950s. They consist of general correspondence with writers, artists, publishers and others. There is also family correspondence, 1907-1983, between Cahill and his sister Anna Johnson, his mother Vigdis Bjarnsdottir, and his second wife Dorothy Canning Miller, who was a long-time colleague at the Museum of Modern Art. In this series there is also correspondence of extraordinary interest between Anna Johnson and Dorothy Canning Miller which contains information about Cahill's birth, name and age, which is fundamentally different from the official biography. Also included are manuscript drafts of his novels, short stories, and articles; story ideas and notes; research notes; poetry and playscripts; writings by others, including Josephine Herbst and Robert A. Andrews; photographs of Cahill, members of his family and friends; and biographical material, interviews, miscellaneous clippings, and some annotated books and magazines.

The Charles Boultenhouse and Parker Tyler Papers (1927-1994) consist of correspondence; published and unpublished manuscripts and typescripts of each man's writings; photographs; personal files and mementos; subject files; films; sound recordings; art work; and printed material including books, periodicals, catalogs, and brochures. The papers document the men's relationship of almost 30 years; their involvement in and contribution to the arts; their social life with friends and colleagues; and, to some extent, the activities of the artistic communities with which they were involved. The bulk of the papers cover the period from 1945 on, after the men met and began living together, and so are in a sense the papers of their household as well as those of each man individually.

Arthur Davison Ficke (1883-1946) was a poet, author and collector of Japanese and Chinese art. Collection contains handwritten and typewritten documents, printed matter and negatives. Most of the papers are notes for lectures Ficke gave on Far Eastern art during the 1930s and 1940s. Also, some correspondence regarding these lectures. Correspondents include photographer Arnold Genthe and Japanese print collectors Louis V. Ledoux and Judson D. Metzgar. Other papers concern Ficke's collection of Japanese and Chinese art. Papers postdating Ficke's death are those of his widow, Gladys Brown Ficke, and pertain to a revision of his book Chats on Japanese Prints, originally published in 1915.

Nicholas N. Martinovich (1883-1954) was a Russian-born authority on Ottoman and Turkish art. He served in the Russian diplomatic service in the Near East and taught Oriental languages at the University of Petrograd. In 1922 he emigrated to the U.S. where he prepared descriptions of manuscripts and art objects for various museums. He wrote books and articles, lectured and taught courses at Columbia University in New York City. Collection consists of biographical sketch; corrrespondence, 1935-1951; and manuscripts of Martinovich's monographs "Battal and Danishmend" (a Turkish legendary work) and on Mihri Khatun, a Turkish poetess of the 15th century. Also, a transcription of an unidentified Persian manuscript and a collection of slides and photocopies of Oriental manuscripts.

Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) was an American architect and housing reformer. John Mead Howells and Stokes worked as partners in the architectural firm Howells and Stokes. In addition to his architectural work, Stokes was an organizer of the Tenement House Committee of the Charity Organization Society, served on the New York State Tenement House Commission, helped write the New York tenement house law of 1901, and designed several model tenements. He had a renowned collection of prints of old New York and was responsible for The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, a six-volume pictorial history published between 1915 and 1928. He served on the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library from 1916 until 1938. Collection consists of correspondence and research notes, drafts and proofs, photographs, and other materials for the Iconography of Manhattan Island. Correspondence, 1909-1928, is with booksellers, print dealers, librarians, collectors, and scholars regarding the purchase, exchange and copying of prints and maps of New York, research in New York history, and the preparation of the Iconography. Correspondence for 1925-1929 concerns Stokes's attempts to sell his print collection; while that for 1930-1933 documents the further development of the collection, its donation to the New York Public Library, and the creation and sale of the catalog of the collection. Materials used in the preparation of the Iconography include research notes, transcriptions and photostats of source materials, photographs of illustrations, drafts, and page proofs. Also, unsigned typescript of an article about New York City Hall.

Personal papers include papers of Lockett Ford Ballard, Jr., Arthur Bell, Billy Wilder Blackwell, Perry Brass, Robert Clement, Don Jackson, Walter Porczak, and Sam Staggs.
