The Hurok Attractions, Inc. records (1906-1974) document several mid-20th-century international tours arranged by the independent booking and promotion agency spearheaded by dance impresario Sol Hurok. The collection contains publicity, press, and ephemera materials for the 1961 and 1964 tours of the Leningrad Kirov Ballet; photographic materials from the tours of Kirov and other companies between 1949 and 1964; and candid and publicity photographs depicting Sol Hurok and his friends, family, associates, audiences, and clients. less

The Charles Boultenhouse and Parker Tyler Papers (1927-1994) consist of correspondence; published and unpublished manuscripts and typescripts of each man's writings; photographs; personal files and mementos; subject files; films; sound recordings; art work; and printed material including books, periodicals, catalogs, and brochures. The papers document the men's relationship of almost 30 years; their involvement in and contribution to the arts; their social life with friends and colleagues; and, to some extent, the activities of the artistic communities with which they were involved. Arthur Davison Ficke (1883-1946) was a poet, author and collector of Japanese and Chinese art. Collection contains handwritten and typewritten documents, printed matter and negatives. Most of the papers are notes for lectures Ficke gave on Far Eastern art during the 1930s and 1940s. Also, some correspondence regarding these lectures. Correspondents include photographer Arnold Genthe and Japanese print collectors Louis V. Ledoux and Judson D. Metzgar. Other papers concern Ficke's collection of Japanese and Chinese art. Papers postdating Ficke's death are those of his widow, Gladys Brown Ficke, and pertain to a revision of his book Chats on Japanese Prints, originally published in 1915. less

Nicholas N. Martinovich (1883-1954) was a Russian-born authority on Ottoman and Turkish art. He served in the Russian diplomatic service in the Near East and taught Oriental languages at the University of Petrograd. In 1922 he emigrated to the U.S. where he prepared descriptions of manuscripts and art objects for various museums. He wrote books and articles, lectured and taught courses at Columbia University in New York City. Collection consists of biographical sketch; corrrespondence, 1935-1951; and manuscripts of Martinovich's monographs "Battal and Danishmend" (a Turkish legendary work) and on Mihri Khatun, a Turkish poetess of the 15th century. Also, a transcription of an unidentified Persian manuscript and a collection of slides and photocopies of Oriental manuscripts. less

Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) was an American architect and housing reformer. John Mead Howells and Stokes worked as partners in the architectural firm Howells and Stokes. In addition to his architectural work, Stokes was an organizer of the Tenement House Committee of the Charity Organization Society, served on the New York State Tenement House Commission, helped write the New York tenement house law of 1901, and designed several model tenements. He had a renowned collection of prints of old New York and was responsible for The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, a six-volume pictorial history published between 1915 and 1928. He served on the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library from 1916 until 1938. Collection consists of correspondence and research notes, drafts and proofs, photographs, and other materials for the Iconography of Manhattan Island. Correspondence, 1909-1928, is with booksellers, print dealers, librarians, collectors, and scholars regarding the purchase, exchange and copying of prints and maps of New York, research in New York history, and the preparation of the Iconography. Correspondence for 1925-1929 concerns Stokes's attempts to sell his print collection; while that for 1930-1933 documents the further development of the collection, its donation to the New York Public Library, and the creation and sale of the catalog of the collection. Materials used in the preparation of the Iconography include research notes, transcriptions and photostats of source materials, photographs of illustrations, drafts, and page proofs.
