Anthony Jerome Griffin (1866-1935) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from the Bronx, New York City. He served in the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; practiced law in the Bronx; was founder and editor of the Bronx Independent; and served four terms as New York State Senator from 1911 to 1915. He also was an inventor and amateur author. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal and military records, political and personal papers, memorabilia, and printed matter relating to Griffin's military and political career. Correspondence, 1885-1935, is largely related to his political activities; the remainder pertains to his legislative concerns, immigration matters for his constituents, as well as some personal correspondence. Legal papers, 1885-1930, include case files, estate files and title abstracts. His writings consist of manuscript and typescript versions and galley proofs of poems, plays and stories. Diaries, 1886-1930, and notes and notebooks, 1883-1934, contain his observations on many professional and personal activities in addition to subject files. Military and patent records concern his military service and endeavors in submarine safety. Political papers are a combination of printed matter, notes and memoranda. Financial records are his accounts from 1887 to 1934. Henry Atherton Forster (1868-1932) was a lawyer and historian in New York City. Collection consists of Forster's correspondence, questionnaires and scrapbook of newspaper clippings. Correspondence, 1916-1932, is with prominent American and foreign lawyers, journalists, politicians, and scholars. There are also many letters from American patriotic organizations in New York City. Topics include espionage in the U.S. during World War I, confiscation of enemy alien property, payment of allied war debts, peace diplomacy, U.S. entry into the war, and financial situation of U.S. after the war. Edith O'Shaughnessy (d. 1939) was an American author of fiction and autobiographical narratives concerning her life abroad. She was active in causes related to the Roman Catholic Church. Her husband, Nelson O'Shaughnessy (1876-1932), was a U.S. career diplomat who was stationed in Denmark, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Mexico. After leaving the diplomatic service, he had a career in private industry. Elim O'Shaughnessy (1907-1966), Edith and Nelson O'Shaughnessy's son, joined the diplomatic service and served in France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and Hungary. Collection contains materials relating to Edith, Nelson and Elim O'Shaughnessy. Correspondence of Nelson O'Shaughnessy, 1899-1928, concerns diplomatic matters, his career in business, and personal and family affairs; correspondence of Edith O'Shaughnessy, 1907-1936, relates to her social and diplomatic life, war work in France, political activities, career as author of books and articles, and family matters. Some financial records are included with the correspondence. Her notes and diaries, 1907-1935, are largely social in nature. Writings include annotated typescripts and manuscripts of her published and unpublished works. Collection consists mainly of 18th-20th century autographs, with the bulk from the mid-19th to 20th centuries, representing both primary and secondary figures from diverse fields including literature, music, education, politics, and royalty. Names include Susan B. Anthony, John Bigelow, Edwin Booth, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, H.L. Mencken, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Margaret Sanger, Philip Schuyler, and Daniel Webster. Figures represented are mainly Americans. Many letters are to Anthony. Following the name file is a subject file consisting of miscellaneous autograph letters arranged by profession or institution.
