Marcella Sembrich was a Polish born coloratura soprano who sang leading roles in European and American opera during her highly successful career. From 1898 to 1909 she was a regular member of the Metropolitan Opera Company, New York. She continued performing as a concert singer after her retirement from the operatic stage. Sembrich also became an instructor of singing at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of Music, becoming mentor to many pupils who later became famous in their own right. The correspondence, papers, posters, and programs in this collection represent the career and activities of Marcella Sembrich and her family from 1851 to 1988. The collection consists of an extensive amount of correspondence with the leading musical figures of the day; posters, concert advertisements and programs from Sembrich (and other) performances throughout her career; and memorabilia including an autograph album with signatures and drawings of famous musicians and others. Series IX "Photographs" also includes some 15-20 original graphic art works among its 2284 items. Subjects include Sembrich, places she lived, places she performed, and people with whom she performed. The sheet music and musical scores (Series X) are currently being processed. less

William "Billy" Skipper was a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker. Skipper danced with all the greats of Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s. He choreographed for musical theater throughout the United States. Skipper produced two films, one about the famous dances of Ruth St. Denis, the other about Tallulah Bankhead. Included in the collection are photographs, manuscript drafts, correspondence and office files. less

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) is the first African American Greek Sorority. It was founded in 1908, by nine college students on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. AKA currently have members in graduate and undergraduate chapters across the world. Their mission is to encourage high scholastics and ethical standards, promote sisterhood, and help young girls and women to improve their social stature. The Alpha Kappa Alpha scrapbook was compiled by Othella Oglesby Johnson (1910-1988), an Alpha Kappa Alpha soror and string and vocal instructor at Public Schools 119 and 129 in New York City. The scrapbook consists of historical and biographical information related to the sorority, its members and activities, including regional and national conferences, anti-discrimination drives and fund raisers. Included are news clippings, programs, photographs, letters, probation and pledge primers and booklets containing sorority poetry, songs, and yells. Letters to Johnson from the period of her pledge years with the Beta Nu Chapter in St. Pittsburg, Kansas are included. less

Michael Stewart (nee Rubin), librettist, lyricist, playwright, and novelist, was born in New York City, where he attended Queens College. He received a Master of Fine Arts in drama from Yale in 1953. Prior to his work on Broadway, Stewart wrote for television and contributed sketches and lyrics to revues. His first effort on Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie, opened in 1960 and won Stewart his first Tony as its author. During his career in the musical theater Stewart also worked on Carnival!, Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street, George M!, Barnum, I Love My Wife, Mack and Mabel, and The Grand Tour. Among his collaborators were the writer Mark Bramble, and the composers Cy Coleman, Jerry Herman, Bob Merrill and Jule Styne. less
