Alexander Smallens was a Russian-born American conductor. He accompanied the Anna Pavlova Ballet Company on a tour to South America (1915-1916) and worked on the staffs of the Boston Opera, Chicago Opera, Philadelphia Opera, and Philadelphia Orchestra. From 1947 to 1950 he was music director of Radio City Music Hall, New York. For many summers he conducted concerts at Lewisohn Stadium, New York. He conducted the premiere of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess in Boston in 1935 and later took it on tour in the United States and Europe. Papers relating to Smallens' career as a conductor include correspondence, programs and flyers, photographs, clippings, complete issues of Broun's Nutmeg 1939 May 27-Sept. 30, and musical scores including arrangements by Smallens and scores with performance markings. Some scores have also been cataloged separately in the Scores file. Correspondents include Marc Blitzstein, Frederick Jacobi, and Leopold Stokowski (each represented by 20 or more letters); George Antheil, Norman Bel Geddes, Alfredo Casella, Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, Olin Downes, Ira Gershwin, Morton Gould, Werner Josten, Darius Milhaud, Serge Prokofieff, Pitts Sanborn, William Schuman, Roger Sessions, Virgil Thomson, Eugen Zador, and Maria Gay Zenatello (each represented by 5 or more letters); and many other composers and conductors; there is 1 letter from Anton Webern. The Papers include material pertaining to her professional activities along with some personal correspondence. The bulk of the materials date from the early 1920s through the 1970s, and includes scores, correspondence, subject files, biographical material, financial records and photographs. A small amount of material pertaining exclusively to the activities of her husband, Lester Cowan, are included in the papers.

Of Thee I Sing co-written with George Kaufman, Ira Gershwin, and George Gershwin. Testified before the House Un-American Activities Hearings. The papers consist of correspondence, diaries and journals, and scripts by Ryskind. The bulk of the collection is scrapbooks, which have been microfilmed. These contain newspaper clippings pertaining to various productions, as well as Ryskind's published poetry and columns.

Caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator, Alfred Frueh, was born in Lima, Ohio in 1880. In his early career, he worked at the St. Louis post-dispatch and the New York world. From 1908 to 1909, Frueh studied art in Europe. In 1925, Frueh joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine, which published his work until 1962. Frueh died in Sharon, Connecticut in 1968. Black and white original caricatures and color linocuts of theatrical productions and personalities. Many of the caricatures of theatrical productions appeared in the New Yorker magazine between 1925 and 1962. Productions depicted include: The children's hour by Lillian Hellman, 1934 and 1953; Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, 1942 and 1953; Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 1923 and 1935; Twentieth century by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (based on a play by Charles Bruce Milholland), 1933 and 1951; and the 1934 and 1936 editions of the Ziegfeld follies. Also included are 2 caricatures of the motion picture, City lights, 1931, with Charlie Chaplin, and 1 caricature of the Ziegfeld Theatre exterior, depicting the tower of the building as a woman's leg and foot, 1929.

The Otto Harbach Papers include correspondence, business papers, scripts, scores, lyrics, personal papers, photographs, and printed matter documenting his personal life and career, and also a particular period in the American musical theater, from ca. 1908-1938, when Harbach created most of his works. Correspondence is mainly between Harbach and his family in Salt Lake City, and later with his son William. Family members include his brothers, Arthur, James, Julius, and William Hauerbach, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and Avern Poulton. Included in the small amount of correspondence from friends and colleagues are several interesting letters from Arthur Hammerstein, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and Carl Sandburg. The collection is particularly strong in covering the business aspects of Harbach's work, documented with contracts, copyright, and royalty information. Scripts form the largest series and include copies of most of Harbach's works. The scores are mostly for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT (music by Jerome Kern) and COUNTER MELODY (music by Peter De Rose) and are notable for the holographs that make up part of the scores for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT. There is also a good collection of photographs, including family, colleagues, ASCAP events, friends, and a selection of production photos. Personal papers include genealogical information, writings other than scripts, ephemera and a long oral history interview conducted by William Harbach shortly before his father's death.

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Flahooley . Among his principal collaborators were Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Burton Lane, Arthur Schwartz and Jerome Kern. He died in Los Angeles in 1981. The collection is primarily business papers, scripts, research notes, notes for lyrics and production ideas from 1929 to 1981. Papers deal mainly with the professional life of Harburg. His political ideology and opinions can be seen in his lyrics, research notes and clippings files. Though there is little mention of his being blacklisted in 1945, his attitudes on government and politics indicates how he may have fallen victim to the McCarthyites and the House Un-American Activities Committee.

The Leo Reisman collection contains primarily private acetate disc recordings of Reisman's radio performances of the 1930's, as well as Reisman's personal collection of commercial 78 rpm discs. Included among the noncommercial recordings are extensive holdings of his Philip Morris Show and Schaefer's nine o'clock revue appearances. Less complete holdings for Lucky Strike's your hit parade are also included. The commercial disc collection is comprised mostly of Reisman's commercially released recordings, as well as a small number of other artists' recordings. All commercial discs have been assimilated into the general holdings of the archive, and can be located in the NYPL catalog.

Each 30-minute program generally features a guest singer or instrumentalist, with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, conducted by Donald Voorhees, and the Bell Telephone Hour Chorus.
