Rafael Sala (1891-1927) of Cataluña was a Spanish painter associated with various modern art movements of the early 20th century. He lived in New York City from 1919 to 1923. America's Making was an exposition held at the 71st Regiment Armory in New York City from October 29 to November 12, 1921. Its purpose was to present three centuries of immigrant contributions to the nation through educational exhibitions and pageantry. The Rafael Sala papers relating to the America's Making exposition, 1920-1921, consist of typescript correspondence, reference files, and printed matter regarding his participation as chairman of the Hispanic Section's Committee on Exhibits. Correspondents include John H. Finley, William Laurel Harris, H.C. Heaton, John Musser, and Lawrence A. Wilkins. Sala's reference files, 1920-1921, bound with metal clips, contain typescript memoranda prepared by America's Making, Inc. and the Hispanic Section outlining Hispanic contributions to the nation to guide their own work, with mention of exhibit and pageantry plans. Similar collected memoranda, two addressed to him as committee chair, are grouped under the file title "America's Making Suggestions." The Albert Shaw Papers contain correspondence (professional and personal); files concerning the books, articles, and speeches Shaw authored, administrative records and articles from the Review of Reviews; and many records of Shaw's personal life, including financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera, and his notes on the Shaw family's genealogy, as well as Shaw's personal memoirs. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

Marvin E. Gettleman (1933- ) is a professor of history at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He has written books about Vietnam, El Salvador and U.S. history. Collection consists of Gettleman's research notes and other items he acquired during the course of research for a proposed biography of John Huston Finley (1863-1940). Included are a few items of correspondence; reminiscences of Finley by his wife, Martha Boyden Finley; copies of papers by or relating to Finley; copies of published articles by Gettleman; and two reels of microfilm relating to Finley made from original sources at various libraries and research institutions. less

John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. The collection consists of seven condolence letters on the death of John Quinn from prominent friends; six are addressed to Quinn's sister Mrs. William V. Anderson (Julia Quinn Anderson); one letter is addressed to lawyer Thomas J. Curtin, John Quinn's assistant. Items comprise: an autograph letter signed "A. Gregory," from Irish patron of the arts Augusta, Lady Gregory, on Coole Park letterhead, to "Dear Sister of John Quinn," dated [1924] July 29 (2 pages), with typescript copy; a typed letter signed from lawyer Richard Campbell on 14 Wall Street letterhead, dated 1924 August 26 (2 pages); an autograph letter signed (1 page) from New York Times editor John H. Finley, with a separate autograph manuscript poem "In Memory of John Quinn" signed "John Quill" with ink drawing of a quill (1 page), both dated 1924 July 29, with typescript copy of the poem; an autograph letter signed from lawyer and author Richard Walden Hale on Schooner Head, Bar Harbor, Maine letterhead, dated 1924 August 26 (1 page), with envelope; an autograph letter signed from artist Walt Kahn, on Ogunquit, Maine letterhead, dated 1924 July 30 (1 page); an autograph letter signed from poet and editor Michael Monahan on New Canaan, Connecticut letterhead to "My dear Mr. Curtin," dated 1924 July 31 (1 page); and a typed letter signed from artist John Sloan as president of The Society of Independent Artists, dated 1924 December 5 (1 page). Records consist of general and family correspondence, personal papers, subject papers, writings and speeches, diaries and travel journals, financial records, papers of Bowker's father, Daniel Rogers Bowker, scrapbooks, photographs, printed matter, and memorabilia. General correspondence reflects R.R. Bowker's business affairs as well as his interest in tariff reform, free trade, copyright law, library science, civil service, and political reform. Other materials include family correspondence, 1857-1932; personal papers containing items such as childhood letters, school reports, family records, and letters of condolence; and subject papers relating to copyright, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., free trade and tariff reform, and his biography. Also, letterbooks for the period from 1875 to 1913; Bowker's writings and speeches; diaries, 1859-1932; and travel journals from the 1860s to 1926 for trips in the United States, the West Indies, Europe, the Near East, and around the world in 1898. Don Carlos Seitz (1862-1935), American journalist and author, worked for several magazines and newspapers, including the New York World where he was business manager from 1898 to 1923. In addition to his editorial career, he wrote biographies and articles for magazines. Collection consists of correspondence and typescripts by Seitz. Correspondence, 1882-1934, mostly incoming, is with political leaders, authors, publishers, editors, and literary people. Topics covered are the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer and Seitz's books.
