Letter (6 p.) from American newspaper journalist George M. Chester (1838-1891) to his mother, 1871 July 16, providing a vivid eyewitness account of the New York City Orange Riot of July 12. Chester was the son of John and Catherine M. Chester of Detroit, Michigan. He served in the Quartermaster’s Department during the American Civil War and later worked for several years as a journalist in New York City. He describes the riot which broke out in Manhattan on July 12, 1871, when Irish-Catholic protesters confronted a parade of Irish Protestant Orangemen commemorating the Battle of the Boyne. The marchers were cordoned under the escort of New York City Police and five regiments of the New York National Guard (the 6th, 7th, 9th, 22nd, and 84th) when shooting broke out on Eighth Avenue near 24th Street, resulting in many injuries and deaths. Serving that day in the 22nd N.Y.N.G., Chester recounts the sequence of events from the start of the parade at Eighth Avenue and 29th Street to his muster-out at the Cooper Institute, and duty the following day. Three sets of line drawings show the strategic disposition of the marchers and their guards at various times, including the disorder following the shootings. less

Charles G. Mead was a captain in the New York City Police Dept. from 1896 to 1921. He also was admitted to the New York Bar in 1906 and in 1907 established the Legal Bureau of the Police Dept. Collection consists of letters written to Mead, and typescripts and newspaper articles describing his police career. Letters were written by Charles Ennis, police reporter and Mead's friend, and describe the effect of poison gas warfare in France and remark on the administration of the Police Dept. less

William H. Kipp was a New York City Police Department employee and New York National Guard officer. Collection consists of papers on general administration of the 7th Regiment of the New York National Guard, its armory and the celebration of Kipp's fifty years of service. Also, letters received as chief clerk of the New York City Police Dept., personal bills, fraternal notices, and papers relating to family and other matters. less

Albert Roswell Lamb served as a member of the Washington, D.C. police force from 1906 to 1916. In 1917 he was appointed head of the National Police in the Republic of Panama and served in that post until 1928. Collection consists of personal and professional papers of Lamb, personal papers of Jacqueline L. MacNish, and clippings about Panama. Lamb's papers contain correspondence and reports relating to his service with the police in Panama, personal papers, and writings including draft of autobiography.
