She was also an educator, teaching Modern Dance at the University of Jamaica in the West Indies, Northwestern University and Barnard College. Klarna Pinska was a dancer, instructor and choreographer who studied under Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn at the Denishawn School in California and New York. She studied further under Charles Weidman and Doris Humphrey. Pinska was committed to teaching dance and movement and influenced a generation of young children though her instruction and productions. The Klarna Pinska Papers contain materials from most of her professional career, and focus on her time working as Ruth St. Denis’ assistant and her teachings in the 1960s and 1970s. The collection also contains correspondence and photographs providing insight into the life of 20th century modern dance. The music scores were used in Pinska’s works, teaching as well as her own career as a dancer. Some of the scores were property of the Denishawn School. less

She established small companies that both toured and performed at festivals. La Meri's school during the 1940s and 1950s was named ethonoligic Dance Center. Danielian, a native New Yorker of Armenian ancestry, enjoyed an especially varied career as a performer, but is best known for his long association with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Following his retirement from the stage, Danielian taught ballet for nearly thirty years at the American Ballet Theatre School and the University of Texas at Austin. less

Manuel Alum was born in Puerto Rico, but his dance training and his career as a modern dancer, teacher, choreographer and director took place mainly in the United States. He was a leading dancer and assistant director of the Paul Sanasardo Dance Company, and then founder and director of the Manuel Alum Dance Company. He also performed solo works and concerts, and choreographed for other companies. The most important materials in this collection pertain to works choreographed by Manuel Alum: 2 notebooks and some additional pages which contain choreographic notes and corrections, background material, a few music notes and costume sketches, and some personal notes or memos. Also included in the collection are biographical materials and lists of works choreographed by Alum, and a few items of correspondence and a contract. less

Martha Hill, a pioneer in the field of dance instruction, served as the first director of dance at The Juilliard School from 1951 until 1985.
