George Henry Sargent (1867-1931), American bibliographer and journalist, was associated with the Boston Evening Transcript from 1895 until 1931. He wrote books and articles on bibliography and a column, The Bibliographer, about rare books. Collection consists of correspondence relating to bibliography, personal and professional papers, and Sargent's autograph and facsimile collections. Correspondence, 1883-1930, is from readers of his column, bibliographical colleagues, and family members. Personal and business papers, ca. 1910s-1930, include lists and descriptions of books and manuscripts in libraries and private collections; typescripts of Sargent's essays on bibliographical topics and some poems; accounts, 1906-1922; notes; and printed matter. Autograph collection contains 18th through 20th century letters, signatures, and a few photographs and documents of a variety of prominent people. Facsimile collection consists of letters and documents of historical and literary figures. less

The Agnes de Mille Collection primarily documents the professional life of Agnes de Mille in the period from the 1940's to the 1980's. The Collection contains over 3,700 items of correspondence to and from other dancers, choreographers, artists, and writers, as well as other personal and professional friends. However, very few of the letters in the latter category are of an entirely personal nature. As de Mille kept a carbon copy of most of her typed letters, many of the files are a complete sequence of letters to and from the correspondent. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent in folders which are in turn arranged chronologically. less

The correspondence and writings of Agnes de Mille cover the period of 1871-1993 and were in the possession of Agnes de Mille at the time of her death. They relate to de Mille's life and career, and that of her family (including husband, William Prude, mother, Anna George de Mille, father, William de Mille, sister, Margaret de Mille, grandfather, Henry George and son, Jonathan Prude). less

The papers of Alexandra Fedorova are comprised of letters and telegrams, mainly from the 1930s, Riga, as well as bills and window cards of her ballet school in New Jersey. The majority of the correspondence is in Russian. For the brief translation see Appendix. less

The major portion of the collection is comprised of research materials and drafts for Mr. Macdougall's biography of Isadora Duncan, published in 1960 as Isadora: a revolutionary in art and love,and correspondence (1953-1956) regarding his efforts to have the work published. It also includes letters to Mr. Macdougall from Irma Duncan concerning the Isadora Duncan School in Moscow (1928) and its continued devotion to the memory of Isadora Duncan. The American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (AAHPER) is a service organization whose founding dates back to November 27, 1885 when William Gilbert Anderson, an instructor of physical education at Adelphi Academy, Brooklyn, invited a group of people working in the gymnastic field to come together to discuss their profession. A successor to the American Physical Education Association, it changed it name in 1975 to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and, in 1979 to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). As of 2003, AAHPERD was an alliance of six national associations, which includes the National Dance Association, and six regional associations. It sponsors conventions, professional development, scholarships, and publications. Headquartered in Reston, VA, it has 26,000 members. The bulk of this collection consists of the official financial and administrative files and reports of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPER), a division of the Department of the National Education Association in Washington, D.C. These records appear in ditto, mimeo, carbon copies, and xerox reproductions of the originals on file in the AAHPER Archives in Washington, D.C. The material covers the Association's activities from 1931-1968. Of particular interest are: a History of the Dance Section 1930-50 and a card file bibliography by AAHPER and its antecedents with page references to dance material. less

A series of personal letters written by Angna Enters, mime-dancer, choreographer, composer, writer, designer, to an English friend, Edward L. Berman, over a period of thirteen years, 1933-1946. The letters cover aspects of Enters' very varied careers and travels and include her political thoughts during the war years. less

Contracts are filed under the respective agencies. The second series includes personal letters to and from Louis Kalonyme, art critic and writer. Kalonyme was Enters' artistic advisor and was acknowledged by her as her husband late in life. Financial documents include leases, bills, and insurance papers. less

Antony Tudor, choreographer and teacher, was born in London and studied ballet with Marie Rambert beginning in 1928, choreographing his first ballet for her Ballet Club in 1931. At the invitation of Richard Pleasant, he came to the United States in 1940 to work with Ballet Theatre. He worked with other companies internationally, but his base remained the United States. The papers in this collection contain material from 1908-1987 (bulk dates 1985-1987). less

Typescripts and carbon copies of articles, criticism, and reviews by critic Arthur Todd in various publications ca. 1948-53. Publications in which these reviews appeared include: Ballet Today, Dance and Dancers, Dance News, Dance Observer, Theatre Artsand Dance Magazine.In addition to articles on Martha Graham, Ballet Theatre, Ballet Russe de Marquis de Cuevas, and the New York City Ballet, are reviews of dancing in Broadway musicals including “The Barrier” (Humphrey-[UNK]), “Carousel” (deMille), “Kiss Me Kate” (Hanya Holm), and “Lend an Ear” (Gower Champion). Among dance books reviewed are: Baron at the Ballet(Arnold L. Haskell), The Dance(John Martin), The Dance Has Many Faces(Walter Sorell, ed.), Nijinsky(Paul Magriel, ed.), and Spanish Dancing(La Meri). less

This collection mainly consists of correspondence relating to his writings and to his attempts to get out of Berlin when Hitler and the Nazis were in power. It also contains some correspondence after his death, relating to locating some of his relatives and getting his letters to the Dance Collection. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent; however, each file may contain material to, from, or about the person listed. Many of the German letters have been translated by Anita Warburg, and she has made a summary of the correspondence in each year of the Michel correspondence. This collection of Charles Barbers' papers includes primarily drafts of published and unpublished articles, along with some of his background notes and materials. The Claire Holt Collection of Indonesian dance materials presents a rich and sensitive account of the cultural life of five islands of Indonesia. The islands, then part of the Dutch East Indies, include Java, Bali, Sulawesi (known in the 1930s as the Celebes), Nias, and Sumatra. Accumulated mostly during the 1930s, the collection comprises approximately 9,000 photographic prints; 3,500 photographic negatives; several reels of 16mm motion picture film; and a small but significant group of manuscripts. In addition to the pre-World War II material are photographic prints, negatives, and slides of artists working in Java and Bali in the mid-1950s. less

The David Libidins Papers document his professional life from 1936 to 1958. Although primarily concerned with his roles as administrator and artists' manager, Libidins' correspondence reflects frequent crossovers between professional relationships and personal friendships. He was widely known as a man for whom there was no separation between the two spheres. less

This collection contains a small group of manuscript items of Edward Gordon Craig[EGC]-Isadora Duncan[ID] interest. The materials came from the archives of Edward (“Teddy”) Craig, son of Edward Gordon Craig and grandfather of Tom Craig, from whom the Dance Collection obtained this collection. All of the items pertain to Isadora Duncan. less

The Eugene Loring Papers document several aspects of Loring's career from 1938 to 1981. He kept extensive notes related to his productions and teaching theories. He also often wrote and spoke about his philosophy of dance, transcripts of which are found in these papers. Being a trained musician, Loring frequently notated his choreography on musical charts or scores. His teaching records include numerous ballet syllabi on six different levels of technique. Loring also expressed himself through drawings, poetry, and prose found among his diaries and personal notes. less

This collection of papers of Fé Alf contains material from c.1928 in Germany to c.1933 in the United States. It contains primarily a diary and course papers written while Alf was a student at the Wigman School in Germany, course papers written while she was a student at the Hagemann Schule in Hamburg, and lectures given at the Wigman School in New York. These materials were organized and identified by Joan Griffin. less

The papers of Felia Doubrovska cover the period from c.1919 to the year of her death, 1981, and pertain to both her family and personal life and her professional career. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence: approximately 43 letters and notes from Doubrovska, and 266 letters, cards, notes, telegrams to Doubrovska, with a small part of the correspondence to her mother (Valentina Dlouzhnevska) and to Vladimiroff. Of interest are 42 letters or notes from Mathilde Kshessinska and her husband the Grand Duke André, and 12 letters from Iurii (Yuri) Bakhrushin. less

The Fred Berk Papers primarily document Berk's involvement in Jewish folk dance in the United States. Berk wrote extensively on the subject. He also made instructional notes on the folk dances and kept address lists of people involved in his teaching seminars and organizations throughout the years. less
