Dorothy Loudon (1925-2003) was a singer, comedienne and Tony Award-winning actress, who appeared in supper clubs, television shows, films, summer stock and on Broadway. The bulk of the materials in this collection are from 1940-2003. They extensively cover the personal life and professional career of Dorothy Loudon, including materials relating to stage, film and television productions, albums, nightclub performances as well as personal correspondence. less

Gustav Blum (d. 1963) was an American theater director, producer, actor, and teacher. In 1916, he founded the East-West Players, a group that performed one-act plays, including English translations of Yiddish plays. The East-West Players won the Belasco Cup at the first Little Theater Tournament in 1923. Blum also produced and staged Broadway plays and worked as a drama teacher in high schools from 1909 until his retirement in 1958. The Gustav Blum papers (1912-1988, bulk 1915-1953) contain a scrapbook, contracts, scripts, photographs, clippings, correspondence, and other papers documenting Blum's career. The scrapbook dates from 1916 to 1923 and contains clippings and programs of the East-West Players. There are scripts for four plays that Blum produced: The Shame Woman (1923), Gertie (1926), My Son (1924), and Walk Hard (1946). The script for Walk Hard is a heavily annotated prompt copy; the other scripts have minimal or no annotation. There are also three scripts written or co-written by Blum: Against the Current, Eden, and A Sleepless Night. Contracts date from 1927 to 1946. The collection includes a statement of receipts and disbursements for Walk Hard and an estimated budget for Laughter in the Courtyard. Photographs consist of images of Blum, an unidentified production photograph, and signed photographs of Bertha Kalich and David Belasco. The collection also contains biographical information, clippings, and copyright records related to Blum's career, dating from 1912 to 1988. less

The Harold Clurman papers contain notebooks and journals, director's annotated scripts, manuscript drafts and annotated typescripts of Clurman's books, and photograph scrapbooks documenting his career as a director, critic and writer. The materials span from 1935 through 1978 and give an interesting look at Clurman's work and thought process as a director. Notebooks contain his ideas on plot and character development, as well as casting notes and ideas for plays which he directed, while the scripts contain his director's annotations and compliment the notebooks for research and study of Clurman's techniques as a director. Drafts and typescripts of Mr. Clurman's three books: On Directing; All People Are Famous; and Ibsen show these works as they evolved. Finally, the photograph scrapbooks give a pictorial representation of specific plays including AWAKE AND SING and foreign productions of THE ICEMAN COMETH and LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. less

Child actress, best known for playing the title roles in the original LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY (1888-1889) and THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, Elsie Leslie returned to the stage as a young adult to star in THE RIVALS (1898) and other plays. Born Elsie Leslie Lyde, she was married twice: in 1901 to actor Jefferson Winter, and in 1918 to banker Edwin J. Milliken. The collection contains letters to Elsie Leslie from friends and admirers, publicity photographs of Leslie as a child and an adult actress, and her autograph album containing letters, photographs, clippings, autographs and cards. Most of the letters concern personal matters: invitations, travels and health, though there is some discussion of possible roles and compliments on her performances. There is an extensive file of letters from playwright Louis N. Parker. Other correspondents include Poultney Bigelow, members of the Samuel Clemens family, Julie Harris, Helen Keller, Julia Marlowe, Schuyler Mathews, and Alexander Woollcott. There is a small amount of third party correspondence, primarily letters to her second husband, Edwin Milliken. less

Tom Keegan and Davidson Lloyd, performance artists based in Santa Monica, California, have been working together since 1977. In 1982 they came out openly as a committed gay couple and have continued to explore that theme. They have won Drama-Logue awards for CRAWLING OFF BROADWAY, PASSING ON THE RIGHT & OTHER ACCIDENTS OF LIFE and TWO LIVES, ONE PAIR OF PANTS. Other pieces they have created include NAKED AND IN LOVE, SECRET DESIRES and THE LAST QUEER TABOO. They have also written children's shows. Collection consists of production photographs, publicity and reviews from various performances, and one published piece by Davidson. Materia l documenting their work in children's theater is not included. less

In 1997 the Library initiated a project to document the changing theater marquees on Broadway. The Library photographer for the on-going project is Christopher J. Frith. Consists of 4 x 6 color photographs of theater marquees from various angles showing the signage, posters and reviews on theater facades that advertise their current productions. Morton DaCosta (born Tecosky), stage and film director and actor, was born 7 March 1914 in Philadelphia. A graduate of Temple University, Mr. DaCosta began his career as an actor and director in regional theatre in 1937. He made his acting debut on Broadway in 1942 in THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH and his New York directing debut in 1949 with a revival of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER. Among his many productions are PLAIN AND FANCY (1955), NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS (1955), AUNTIE MAME (1956) with which he made his film directing debut in 1958, and THE MUSIC MAN (1957). Mr. DaCosta died in 1989. The Morton DaCosta Papers consist of scripts and promptbooks, production materials, correspondence and personal papers documenting his life and career as a director and actor of stage and film. The papers span the years 1929 to 1978 and include such productions as THE MUSIC MAN, SARATOGA, NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS and AUNTIE MAME, among others. less

The papers of Montgomery Clift consist of a small amount of correspondence, scripts, photographs, notes and scrapbooks. The strength of the collection is in the large number of annotated scripts which range from early drafts to final scripts. The annotations provide insight both to Clift's involvement in the development of the films and plays and the characters he portrayed. Some plays included are : The Seagull (1954), There Shall be No Night (1940), You Touched Me! (1945) and Yr. Obidient Husband (1938). Films include: The Big Left (1950), The Defector (1966), Freud (1962), From Here to Eternity (1953), Judgement at Nuremberg (1961), The Misfits (1961), A Place in the Sun (1951), Raintree County (1957), The Search (1948), Suddenly Last Summer (1959), Wild River (1960) and The Young Lions (1958), among others. Included as well is a manuscript for an unproduced screenplay written by Clift and Kevin McCarthy, Clift's friend and collaborator. less

Scripts, production records, published articles, correspondence, programs, ephemera, photographs and artwork document actor and director Erica Brown Freeman's association with the avant-garde and experimental Ridiculous Theatrical Company in New York City and its leaders Charles Ludlam and Everett Quinton over more than ten years. In addition to many annotated scripts and production documentation, of particular note are the complete production notes for Ludlam's The Mystery of Irma Vep, production documentation for Ludlam's Camille in both New York and London, various drafts of Quinton's script for Hunchback of Notre Dame, and an annotated typescript (1964) for When Clowns Play Hamlet by H. M. Koutoukas. Also included are two life masks of Charles Ludlam and Everett Quinton and two paintings by Charles Ludlam, gifts to Freeman from Ludlam. less

Claire Joseph Nichtern (1920-1994) was an American producer of Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals in the second half of the twentieth century. The Claire Nichtern papers (1962-1987) document her professional career. The bulk of the collection consists of production files for Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals produced by Nichtern, who was president of Warner Theatre Productions from 1979-1985. The collection also contains a small amount of office files, scripts, and posters. There is very little personal material in the collection. less
