Charles Ellsworth Goodell (1926-1987), lawyer, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from upstate New York, 1959-1968, and U.S. Senator, 1968-1971. Although at first he was a conservative Republican, he adopted increasingly liberal views on public policy. After being defeated in his bid to return to the Senate because of his opposition to the Vietnam War, he practiced law in Washington, D.C. and served as chairman of the Presidential Clemency Board which reviewed applications for clemency by Vietnam War resisters. Collection consists of papers documenting Goodell's public career as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 43rd and 38th Congressional Districts in New York State and as U.S. Senator from New York, records of his chairmanship of the Presidential Clemency Board, personal papers, photographs, and audio-video materials. Congressional papers include general correspondence; case and committee files; congressional district files; bills and resolutions; files relating to politics, publicity and Goodell's public activities; and files of his legislative and administrative assistants. Photographs and audio-video materials, including recordings of oral history interviews, reflect Goodell's public career. Gwendolen Haste (1889-1979) was an American poet. She wrote poems and short stories, worked in public relations at the General Foods Corporation from 1926 to 1954, and was active in the Poetry Society of America. She won the Nation Poetry Prize in 1922. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, materials pertaining to Haste's work at General Foods, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence concerns her work and personal and family matters. Writings include published and unpublished poems, short stories, reminiscences, 1908 and 1912 diaries she kept at the University of Chicago, travel journals, and literary notebooks. Rossiter Johnson (1840-1931) was an American author and editor. In addition to editing historical and reference works, he wrote biographies, histories and poetry. He and his first wife, Helen Kendrick Johnson (1844-1914), were ardent anti-feminists who belonged to various organizations opposed to women's suffrage. Helen Johnson was also an author and editor. Rodman Gilder (1877-1953) was an American editor and author. He was editor of Criterion and Credit Monthly and wrote on various subjects. The best known of his literary works is The Battery New York, a History (1935). He was also the archivist of Century Associates. Collection consists of notes and sources for Gilder's writings, papers relating to the history and business operations of the Century Company between 1913 and 1914, and some personal papers. Materials for Gilder's writings include correspondence, typescripts of articles, and research notes for biographies of Don Marquis and Joan of Arc. Century Company papers contain copies of memoranda and letters, circulation analyses for the Century and St. Nicholas magazines, financial records, by-laws, published histories, catalog of publications for 1913, two posters illustrated by Maxfield Parrish and Henry McCarter, and printed matter. Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) was an American actor and author who appeared on the New York and London stages; Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) was a successful actress in New York. They became co-stars in 1904, were married in 1911, and toured, mainly in Shakespeare plays, until her final retirement in 1924. Sothern devoted much of his later years to public readings, lectures and writing. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, theatre materials, financial and legal papers, and photographs. Correspondence, ca. 1860-1950, is between Sothern and Marlowe and with colleagues, family and friends; other correspondence concerns business and legal matters. Literary papers, ca. 1908-1929, contain notes, copy books, drafts, and typescripts of essays, poems, lectures, articles, and books by Sothern and Marlowe. St. Clair McElway (1845-1915) was the editor of the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper from 1884 until 1915. In addition to his newspaper work, he gave numerous addresses and speeches and was a member of the New York Board of Regents from 1883 to 1915 (he became Chancellor in 1913). Collection consists of correspondence, writings, memorabilia and personal documents, photographs, and printed matter of McKelway and others. Correspondence, 1872-1948, is mainly concerned with educational matters, with some editorial correspondence and personal letters written by McElway and members of his family. Most of the writings, 1881-1915, are originals and copies of McElway's addresses and speeches which deal with public affairs, educational issues and matters pertaining to Brooklyn. Other writings include editorials for the Brooklyn Eagle, book reviews and obituaries. Saul Kussiel Padover (1905-1981), historian and teacher, was born in Austria but came to the U.S. in 1920. He was a prolific author including among his subjects Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx. From 1938 to 1943 he served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior and did intelligence work in Europe during World War II. Later he taught American political history at the New School in New York City. Collection consists of materials generated in Germany from October 1944 through May 1945 by Padover and two colleagues, Lewis Gittler and Paul Sweet. They were members of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) attached to the U.S. Army. Papers contain copies of psychological and political profiles based on interviews with Nazi party members, workers, industrialists, radicals, government officials, former prisoners in concentration camps, children, and others. Also included are analyses of conditions in the liberated areas, daily summaries of intelligence and political reports, personal journals kept by Padover with reflections on conditions in Germany in the final days of World War II and on-the-spot descriptions of death camps, a few photographs, typescripts of articles by Padover and Gittler, newsclippings from American newspapers, and some memorabilia. less

Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) was an American architect and housing reformer. John Mead Howells and Stokes worked as partners in the architectural firm Howells and Stokes. In addition to his architectural work, Stokes was an organizer of the Tenement House Committee of the Charity Organization Society, served on the New York State Tenement House Commission, helped write the New York tenement house law of 1901, and designed several model tenements. He had a renowned collection of prints of old New York and was responsible for The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909, a six-volume pictorial history published between 1915 and 1928. He served on the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library from 1916 until 1938. Collection consists of correspondence and research notes, drafts and proofs, photographs, and other materials for the Iconography of Manhattan Island. Correspondence, 1909-1928, is with booksellers, print dealers, librarians, collectors, and scholars regarding the purchase, exchange and copying of prints and maps of New York, research in New York history, and the preparation of the Iconography. Correspondence for 1925-1929 concerns Stokes's attempts to sell his print collection; while that for 1930-1933 documents the further development of the collection, its donation to the New York Public Library, and the creation and sale of the catalog of the collection. Materials used in the preparation of the Iconography include research notes, transcriptions and photostats of source materials, photographs of illustrations, drafts, and page proofs. The International Committee for Political Prisoners was founded in 1924 to to agitate for the release and raise funds for the relief of political prisoners throughout the world. The ICPP dissolved in 1942 once the advent of World War II made assistance to political prisoners nearly impossible. The Jewish Foundation for Education of Women was founded in New York City in 1880 as the Louis Down Town Sabbath School for the purpose of helping underprivileged children of Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side. From 1895 to 1932 it was known as the Hebrew Technical School for Girls and offered courses in commercial and industrial arts to young women. In 1932 its board of directors closed the school and developed in its place a program of direct scholarship assistance to women. As the Jewish Foundation for Education of Women the foundation continues to offer, since 1964 on a non-sectarian basis, scholarship assistance to disadvantaged women seeking to better themselves through higher education. Collection consists of correspondence, minutes of the board of directors, annual reports, case records, registers of scholarship recipients, and financial statements. Records reflect the origins of the organization in 1880 as a charity school for aiding children of Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side; its development into a vocational school for under-privileged Jewish women; and its work as a foundation offering scholarship grants and loans to disadvantaged Jewish women seeking personal advancement through higher education. Most of the records predate 1964 when the foundation became non-sectarian. Correspondence, 1900-1948, concerns legal, financial and administrative matters. Minutes, 1915-1988, also include financial reports and reports on recipients of grants and loans. Annual reports are from the period 1880-1893, 1896-1919. Case files, 1937-1955 (bulk 1937-1941) contain applications submitted to the scholarship committee by women applying for tuition loans or grants (there are a few photographs of applicants). Registers of applicants cover two periods: 1934-1940 and 1940-1963. Bulk of the financial records consists of auditors' annual financial statements and reports, 1927-1950. Helen Wilmans Post (1831-1907) was an American journalist, publisher and proponent of the mental science movement which stressed control of mind over matter. She started her own paper, The Woman's World, and published a weekly magazine, Freedom. Correspondence includes letters, 1900-1906, written by Wilmans Post, members of her family, and persons in the mental science movement. Henry Draper (1837-1882), an American astronomer, was a pioneer in astronomical photography. Henry Kittredge Norton (1884-1965) was an American educator, journalist, author, and businessman. He was an advocate of aerial transit as a method of urban mass transportation. His positions included trustee and president of the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad, director of Walter Kidde & Co., and member of the New York City Transit Authority. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, designs and plans, and scrapbooks of photographs documenting Norton's efforts toward the adoption of monorails for San Francisco and New York City. Papers include correspondence, 1947-1954; published and unpublished reports, 1948-1955, relating mostly to mass transportation in the San Francisco Bay area; and designs, blueprints and drawings of monorails, as well as related patents. Herbert George Gutman (1928-1985) was a historian and professor of history at Fairleigh Dickinson University and various New York universities. His published works concerned the social and economic structure of American labor. Bulk of the collection consists of Gutman's correspondence and writings. James M. Geraghty (1905-1983) was the art editor of The New Yorker magazine from 1939 to 1973. During his tenure, he also edited nine of the magazine's cartoon albums. Collection consists of correspondence, original art, unpublished manuscript, photographs, printed matter, and ephemera that document Geraghty's career and his friendships with New Yorker cartoonists. Bulk of the collection is his correspondence with artists and colleagues. Original art is largely Christmas cards created by New Yorker artists. Unpublished manuscript is annotated partial manuscript by Geraghty for a book about his years at the magazine. Photographs are of New Yorker artists and staff. Everett Pepperell Wheeler (1840-1925) was an American lawyer and civil service reformer. He was a founder of the New York Bar Association and served for seventeen years as chairman of the executive committee of the New York Civil Service Reform Association. Other organizations he supported were the Citizens Union, the Committee of Seventy, the Reform Club, and the Man Suffrage Association. Collection consists of correspondence, legal and real estate papers, articles, speeches, maps, photograph, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1882-1925, mainly concerns Wheeler's opinions on World War I, Armenian immigration, and womens suffrage. Francis Vinton Greene (1850-1921) was an American soldier, engineer and author. His military duties included serving as military attaché in Russia in 1877, teaching at West Point, and commanding volunteers during the Spanish-American War. In 1903 he was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City. He also worked as an engineer on various projects and wrote military histories. Collection consists of Greene's correspondence, his papers pertaining to service in the Spanish-American War, speeches, miscellaneous materials, and books. Correspondence, 1801-1921, includes general correspondence; letters from Theodore Roosevelt, Major General Emory Upton and General William Tecumseh Sherman; and family letters. Spanish-American War papers, 1898-1900, contain orders, telegrams, accounts, reports, and some correspondence. Speeches, 1898-1918, were given by Greene as a soldier, businessman and police commissioner.
