Although born and raised in England, Craig moved to the continent in 1904 where he continued to work; the impact of his radical innovations in stage design were international in scope. Craig’s colleague, Donald Oenslager, an American stage designer and longtime faculty member of the Yale School of Drama, whose own work had been profoundly influenced by Craig, amassed the selection of letters and prints that form this collection. less

Dorothy Fields, lyricist and librettist, was born in Allenhurst, New Jersey, July 15, 1905. She was the daughter of Lew Fields, comedian and producer, and Rose (Harris) Shoenfeld. Her first well known song was "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," which she wrote with James McHugh in 1928. She collaborated extensively with her brother Herbert Fields, who also was a librettist. Their most famous production was "Annie Get Your Gun," produced in 1946. Her other brother Joseph Fields was a dramatic actor, producer, and playwright. She was married in 1938 to Eli Lahm and they had two children, David and Eliza. She also collaborated with: Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Sigmund Romberg, Burton Lane, Arthur Schwartz, Fritz Kreisler, Morton Gould, Cy Coleman, Albert Hague, Oscar Levant, Harry Warren, and her son David Fields Lahm. Dorothy Fields is probably best known for having written the lyrics to "Sweet Charity." She was a representative of the Dramatists' Guild on the Council of the Authors' League of America, secretary of the Dramatists' Guild, and one of the few women members of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. She died in 1974 in New York City. The Dorothy Fields papers consist of lyrics, including drafts of unpublished lyrics; scripts, including working outlines and drafts of scripts never produced; newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, programs, ephemera, and other material related to the career of Dorothy Fields,her father and two brothers. The collection reveals her creative processes for developing lyrics and librettos. Another strength of the collection is that it contains an extensive clipping file on the career of Mrs. Fields's father Lew Fields. Correspondence, however, is limited--there are only eight letters. less

He worked with numerous artists including Charles Ludlam, Ethyl Eichelberger, Jackie Curtis, Cookie Mueller, Bill Vehr, Tomata du Plenty, and Gary Indiana. Heys also created several one man shows including his portrayal of Diana Vreeland and La Mamounia; directed Alba Clemente in Rene Ricard's translation of Jean Cocteau's A Human Voice; and created a documentary about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The collection contains materials related to the people and personalities whom Heys knew and the performances that Heys was involved in or attended. Gustav Blum (d. 1963) was an American theater director, producer, actor, and teacher. In 1916, he founded the East-West Players, a group that performed one-act plays, including English translations of Yiddish plays. The East-West Players won the Belasco Cup at the first Little Theater Tournament in 1923. Blum also produced and staged Broadway plays and worked as a drama teacher in high schools from 1909 until his retirement in 1958. The Gustav Blum papers (1912-1988, bulk 1915-1953) contain a scrapbook, contracts, scripts, photographs, clippings, correspondence, and other papers documenting Blum's career. The scrapbook dates from 1916 to 1923 and contains clippings and programs of the East-West Players. There are scripts for four plays that Blum produced: The Shame Woman (1923), Gertie (1926), My Son (1924), and Walk Hard (1946). The script for Walk Hard is a heavily annotated prompt copy; the other scripts have minimal or no annotation. There are also three scripts written or co-written by Blum: Against the Current, Eden, and A Sleepless Night. Contracts date from 1927 to 1946. The collection includes a statement of receipts and disbursements for Walk Hard and an estimated budget for Laughter in the Courtyard. Photographs consist of images of Blum, an unidentified production photograph, and signed photographs of Bertha Kalich and David Belasco. The collection also contains biographical information, clippings, and copyright records related to Blum's career, dating from 1912 to 1988. less

Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The collection holds programs, telegrams, photographs, biographical material, and scrapbooks containing images of stage actors from the early 1900s. less

Betty Mandeville (1910-2001) was a producer-director for The FBI in Peace and War, a radio crime drama that aired on CBS from 1944 to 1958. Mandeville worked as a producer on the show for its entire run, and was the sole producer-director beginning in 1948. The Betty Mandeville production papers contain Mandeville's scripts from the show from 1950 to 1958. Many of the scripts have handwritten revisions and annotations, as well as advertisements for broadcast. The revised scripts provide documentation of the radio production process in the 1950s. The collection includes a small number of records related to television productions with which Mandeville was involved. less

Barry Hyams (1911-1989) was an American theater producer and press representative who publicized over 40 Broadway productions throughout the course of his career. His production work was limited to Off-Broadway pieces associated with Rooftop Productions. Hyams was the head of publicity for the Lincoln Center Repertory Company during the 1960s, and the editor of Theatre: The Annual of the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center. The Barry Hyams papers date from 1947 to 1963 and document Hyams' work as a press representative for Broadway. The collection contains publicity files and scrapbooks for over 30 Broadway productions, many of which were produced by Robert Whitehead and the Producers Theatre. This collection is rich with material demonstrating the nature of Broadway press relations. He was the first and longest-lasting press agent for Joseph Papp and the Public Theater, from its inception in the 1950s until 1985. The Merle Debuskey papers date from 1952 to 1996 and document Debuskey’s work as a press representative for Broadway and Off-Broadway theater productions, and his work with The Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers (ATPAM). The collection holds publicity files for theater productions and actors; correspondence and press-related material relating to Joseph Papp and the Public Theater; administrative files relating to the Tony Awards and ATPAM; and scripts. less
