Albert S. Bard (1866-1963) was an attorney and civic activist in New York City. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School, Bard came to New York City in 1893, where he engaged in the practice of corporation and general law until a few years before his death. From 1901-1935 (or 1938) he practiced with his partner, Leighton Calkins (1868-1955), under the firm name of Bard & Calkins at 25 Broad Street. Bard continued to practice law until 1960. Bard was an energetic participant in civic and urban affairs and a member of numerous civic and professional organizations, to which he contributed his legal expertise. As a preservationist, he opposed many of Robert Moses' plans for the development of New York City. He successfully organized opposition to the Brooklyn-Battery Bridge project and was instrumental in the preservation of Castle Clinton. Bard also retained life-long affiliations with his hometown of Norwich, Connecticut, and the schools he attended. The Albert S. Bard papers include correspondence, notes, reports, draft legislation, printed material, photographs and posters documenting his decades of participation in urban affairs, especially in matters relating to city planning, good government, billboard advertising, and ballot reform. Bard's civic affiliations represented in the collection include the Citizens Union of New York, City Club of New York, the City Fusion Party, the Fine Arts Federation of New York, the Honest Ballot Association, the Mayor's Billboard Committee, the Municipal Art Society, and the National Roadside Council, among many others. Personal and family papers include Bard's personal correspondence and letterbooks, appointment books recording his professional and social activities, a typescript genealogy of the Bard family, a few photographs, and printed memorabilia.

Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) was an American businessman, banker, diplomat, and statesman. He founded the banking firm of L.P. Morton & Co. in New York City. After an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1876, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York in 1878. He was Minister to France from 1881 to 1885, was elected Vice-President of the U.S. under Benjamin Harison in 1888, and served as Governor of New York in 1895 and 1896. In 1899 he founded the Morton Trust Co. and retired after the company merged with Guaranty Trust. The Levi P. Morton papers consist of correspondence, family papers, speeches, biographical materials, political memorabilia, photographs, and scrapbooks documenting the political and professional career, personal life and family background of the businessman and politician. Correspondence, 1842-1920, relates to civil reform, Morton's political campaigns, his service as Minister to France, and his activities as businessman, banker, congressman, vice-president, and governor. Also, correspondence, 1871-1915, of his wives, Lucy K. Morton and Anna Livingston Morton; papers of the Morton, Parsons, Street, and Kearney families; memorabilia from Morton's political campaigns; and biographical sketches, speeches, photographs, and scrapbooks of clippings, 1859-1913.

The McCarty family genealogical research papers consist mainly of the correspondence of Edwin R. McCarty, dating 1869-1903, concerning his genealogical research on the McCarty family of Pennsylvania. McCarty traced the descendants of Thomas McCarty and Elizabeth Lancaster, both of Bucks County, who were married in 1765. The collection includes a few letters to and from Aaron Lancaster, 1853-1854, genealogical notes, family trees, and a map of northern Bucks County showing land held by the McCartys, as well as miscellaneous clippings and printed material. The collection also includes manuscript and typescript copies of an 1880 essay, The Families of Lancaster and McCarty: A Sketch by R. B. H. of New York.

The Robbins family genealogical research papers consist of correspondence, 1880-1882, of genealogist David-Parsons Holton, M.D., and his wife Frances K. Holton, and other materials relating to their research on the Robbins family, as well as correspondence of collection donor Christine (Mrs. William J.) Robbins, 1947-1956, regarding her own research. The collection includes genealogical family trees and charts, among them a "Chart of Descendants of John Robbins, of Wethersfield, Ct., through his great great Grandson, Capt. Elisha Robbins," published by David-Parsons Holton in 1882. Also present are extensive notes and notebooks on the Robbins family compiled mainly by Frances Holton, with notes by Orrin G. Robbins on a branch of the family in Copenhagen, New York; also, copies (some typed, some transcribed and some in photostat) of original Robbins family documents, including property deeds from 1661 and 1689, attested by C. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree.

The Provoost (Provost) family, of French Huguenot descent, were early settlers of New Amsterdam. David Provoost (1670-1724) was a merchant and Mayor of the City of New York from 1699 to 1700. His nephew John Provoost (d. 1767) was the son of Samuel Provoost and Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander, prominent New York City merchants, and the stepson of James Alexander, a prominent New York lawyer and politician. The Provoost family papers include a manuscript copy of David Provoost's genealogy of the Provoost family of New Amsterdam (compiled 1724), made by John Provoost in 1742, as well as two letters from John Provoost at Curacao to his parents dated 18 May 1736 and 21 June 1736, concerning shipment and prices of goods, addressed to his stepfather, James Alexander, in New York. Also present are some genealogical notes dated 1785, and a letter from Lucy D. Akerly to a Mr. King, 6 Oct. 1897, loosely laid in, concerning the Provoost family.
